Listen: Football, Andy Reid And Patrick Mahomes discussed on ESPN 1000 Post Game
"When I said when I said thirty touchdowns people are like you idiot. You know, anything? That's why you're working at his head. Okay. Okay. You're you're right on the money big boy. And he is he is more than delivered in terms of him being the extension on the field of Andy Reid. I thought that was really a very very good comparison. Yeah. When I when I sat down and talk with Andy out in Denver before they played the Broncos on Monday night a couple of weeks ago. That's exactly what he said was that his relationship with this kid as far as sitting down trying to determine exactly what he's comfortable with what he likes to run the kind of things that really make him feel good going into a game is so easy and so natural. So organic that he really never stresses about anything. And if you know, Andy, and he's kind of like that. And he's very easy going very natural, very organic. Although at the same time, very detailed and very particular as far as how he wants his offense run. But they kind of the day this mess perfectly. They have a synergy that very much. So is one where Andy wants done Patrick. Takes onto the football field and gets done, and he is an extensive of him out there, and they are able to fight through adversity some of the versity that they've had already and neither one of them ever get panicked. They always feel as though they have a way to figure it out. And it's just it's flat out special. They told me this from day one. They told me the kid was going to do special things. They told me he was wired differently on top of the fact that he just has a very unique skill set of the license. You haven't seen in a long time, and it's all coming to fruition and right now. And here's the thing. Here's the thing that people don't really realize about this kid, or maybe they do he is the unquestioned leader on this football team already veterans have given it to him. The veterans have asked for the veterans want him to be the one who stands in front of the football teams and kind of leaves them gives them the direction and tells them when to keep working when things are going good and winning and went to not get down and continue to work on when things go bad. It's guys like Justin Houston like Eric berry who have said it's his team now. And he's taking it over real quick to to say what he's on pace where he's on pace for over fifty two hundred yards as well. As Ben Rothlisberger by the way and on pace for fifty four touchdown. So he is on pace for listen. I learned after. Yeah. Go ahead. Let's start with all this thing. I was going to say I mean to cut you off is affected. Remember now. This is a kid who in his first year as a starter is doing this. Then office Burger's been around for a long time. Correct. And Rothlisberger played with Antonio Brown. For a long time. He's played for Mike Tomlin for a long time. This is Patrick Mahomes first full year as a starter his first year. That's ridiculous. What he's doing what he's doing? We may not see done for a long long time if ever again what he's doing is special. He's a first year starter coming from an offense that everyone said his skill set. And what he knew in college will not translate the what's going on in the NFL. So that also speaks to just the Khanna coaching job that Andy Reid is doing right now. And I asked this question on Twitter. Last night. Although I was talking about Brian Kelly. I know that's your team and your school. I wasn't trying to say you shouldn't have been coach of the year. But what I was saying was this. What does it mean to be like coach of the year? What exactly are the criteria for that? Because if Andy Reid is in coach of the year for what he is doing for Patrick Mahomes right now. I don't know. Who is now we're talking to Louis Riddick on the shell Pennzoil performance line are ESPN NFL front office insider, and it's absolutely right. It shows up all the time especially knowing when you're getting a guy that a lot of us looked at and thought young raw skill set. But after Lewis has proclamations this summer, I'm willing to ride on fifty touchdowns and five thousand yards. I am not denying Louis Riddick any longer because it was overwhelmingly prophetic. But I ask you Louis with this team. Now that you said unquestioned leader a top of their division right now. But you look very closely followed by a chargers team, but they beat week one and get ready to face in a couple of weeks as you look down the stretch for both of these teams have do you think there's any shot that the chargers who are led by one of those veteran quarterbacks and Philip rivers have a chance of catching them. Sure, the very much a look to the chiefs have a very tough three-game stretch coming up for them. And they know it they know that this right here is kind of the moment of truth for them starting with the ravens on Sunday. And this is a football team. The ravens that can give them a lot of problems because they have a running attack that could absolutely just drive them. Crazy eat up a lot of time on the clock. Keep Patrick off the football field, and basically do to them what the Cowboys did to the saints, which is, you know, played great defense run, the football and frustrate the heck out of you. So the point where all of a sudden now, you look you don't have that many possessions in your in a dogfight. So they know that they need to play some of their best football over the next three weeks. They know that the chargers look Philip rivers is one of the very very best. They know that they cannot afford to have any letdowns at all the AFC west is is interesting of division as there is. Because you can't forget about Denver either Denver right now. Although the the injury to Emmanuel Sanders. Brutal. It's it's awful. It's awful. But I mean, they they are a team that right now starting to hit their stride. And they have got some of the components that you need to win in today's game in namely, they have two guys who can absolutely just terrorize your quarterback in Bonn Miller. So this division is very very interesting here down the stretch and the cheese as good as they've been. They know the right now is when they have to put the pedal to the floor more so than as far as let let's put a bow on a team. And I want you to do it from from former player that you were and front office. So Jacksonville loses last night. We know their season is over after what they had last year. So I start from a player's standpoint. What's going on in that locker room? If you are a player on this team. And then from the front office side. What's that first meeting going to be like when the season is over like what the hell just happened from a player's standpoint. Look this this team if I'm on that team right now, especially in I'll talk about it from the defensive side of the ball since that's where I played. And I've been on teams were defenses dominated an offense is kinda. Lagged, and you can get very frustrated when offenses and carrying their weight and it can affect your performance. Although I will say this. There's something wrong. If I'm a player on the football team. I'm going in. If I'm not one of the leaders, I'm going we lack leadership on this football team. We do we know that we are run Centric team that has led bar defense and is led by turnovers, and we need to get the offense as many opportunities as possible. But right now, we're quitting. This is a front running football team on that side of the football in particular last night. It was exposed for just that and don't give me it's Thursday night. And they're traveling. And they can't you know, it's always, you know, the the road team always has difficult time really raising their level of play on Thursday night games. What they did. Last night was embarrassing. You seeing some of the highlights right now. The one run the sixteen yard run. I believe it was in the third quarter that there can rehab for a touchdown, you soul, guys literally. And I'm telling you might you know, this you saw guys going. I'm not hitting him. I'm not tackling him business decision. It's not it's not worth it to me. And that is a problem. And if I was a guy on that team right now, I'd be I'd be worried about the next phase that you wanted me to talk about which is what is the front office going to do because right now I guarantee Tom Coughlin is like a side himself coming out of his skull trying to figure out why this football team can shut out Andrew luck one week. And then the next week turn around and this absolutely lay an egg, not play bad laying egging look like they didn't even want to be there. So how am I going to dress? His team won a better figure out quarterback. That's obvious. We have to be more than just a one dimensional run cetera football team. So that means what am I doing wide receiver? Where's the weaponry going to be like around whatever my is going to be hopefully, we can keep our offensive line healthy because offense align health, really hurt them. And then on the defensive side, I'm looking at the scheme, and I'm looking at the leadership on this football team, particularly at linebacker and at safety going who was the guy who when we're absolutely getting run through. Like we were last night is going to say guys. This isn't on the fact that the offense stinks. This is on on the fact. We know all year long. We've needed to you know, really raise our level of play help that side of the ball. This is on us. And right now, we got a problem. They don't have nobody on that side of the ball. That will do that. You tell me who the leader is on that defense. Now, there isn't a single callers. It's not helping Smith. It's not miles Jack. It's not bury church. I only think Berry's church started less. It's not those guys. It's they don't have the right now are led by Jalen Ramsey player on that ball team. And he was a guy who said the rest of the leaks stunk. And yet they're just getting runs ruined smacked around like, they they look like a bottom tier deep statistics, say, exactly.."
