Listen: What is the Road Forward for Chinese President Xi Jinping?
"Much with this now with the seventh anniversary of the communist experiment in China Elizabeth economy I can't say enough about her book the third revolution and in chapter eight the road forward let's get an update how's the road forward for president she does so president she is facing some pretty serious head winds right now both at home where he confronts slowing Chinese economy concerns over employment the environment you know his anti corruption campaign is still moving forward but a lot of discontented people right now within China and certainly abroad obviously the protests in Hong Kong a very serious challenge at to serve the legitimacy of that communist experiment as well as the US China trade war and push back against many of the belt and road projects so these are you know she did things major initiatives right we claiming sovereignty over Hong Kong Taiwan the South China Sea the belt and road expanding Chinese influence China's growing presence on the global stage so you know things are are in different he's in a difficult position right now a hundred and sixty five a chance I think five hundred ninety tanks will roll through the capital tomorrow place. what's the story the Chinese leader is telling the Chinese people at the moment to keep things together what's the story she's been paying really uses two different narratives to rally support the first is we have risen right he very famously said in his acceptance speech for his second five year term you know China has stood up grown rich is now moving toward center stage is really rising on the global stage right is the return of China the rejuvenation of the great Chinese nation and that's the type of thing that this military parade speaks to at the same time we've seen over the past month or so in preparation for this event that he's he's using that threat narrative right the US is trying to contain us we face threats to our core interests with face threats to the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party so that's the other sort of narrative that he's developed in order to find the Chinese people to to him into the Chinese Communist Party seventy years of the Communist Party now give me the biggest threat to the right now is what is happening with the economy less how big a threat is the slow down in China at the moment to the Chinese I've seen economist looking for five percent GDP growth in China through the next twelve months this five percent get it done does that keep things stable. I think that there is a magic number frankly that will lead to instability in China it could be five percent it could be four percent they're going to continue to try to use all of the mechanisms that they have at their disposal from you know encouraging banks to loan more encouraging local governments to invest more a using the state owned enterprises they will continue to pump money into the system a to the best of their ability to maintain stability they also have an extraordinary coercive police apparatus make they spend more on their internal policing than they do on the Chinese people's Liberation Army well like they have two hundred million surveillance cameras you know phones are now being fitted with these apps that download every piece of information from where you're shopping to your health records right to the local public security bureaus so even if the thing slows down and you begin to have some marginal social unrest they have in place very serious police capabilities an argument I hear again and again and again in a program like this that the president in China can wait this president out here in the United States come white things out until the next election I struggle with this idea because I don't see a single Democrat on the stage in the debates who doesn't agree with the president on most aspects of taking on China they might disagree on the approach that they agree on the objective and if I was the Chinese right now and I was thinking about facing the first term president or second term president with all of that a mindless doesn't facing a second term president make a little bit more sense well I think it's yes that is the devil you know is oppose the one that you don't know that's pretty much how they look at I think the concern in China around president trump is really that even if they get a trade deal done on Friday when Monday comes around he's gonna turn up in say L. actually you now need to do this or that so I think that uncertainty that he brings to the table is is the challenging for the Chinese to recommend little kids. start banner in early were you one you know the the the vote is you know we have to learn Chinese why is no one learn on. what is nobody learned met me mandarins manages the which is the main language that is used when China Jordan trying to children start children should start learning Chinese if they want to learn Chinese look my kids all study Chinese five six years they also study planner for giving you I've got a classics major I have an econ major got our history major at that nobody pursuing China they all studied in China it it really should stem from the desire of the child I don't believe in forcing children to to study anything was all over babble Mandarin is just killing I'm I'm laughing battle Mandarin you right yeah thanks for that. Elizabeth right thank you so much I can't say enough about this so the short read but it's just took easy wonderful thoughtful read on today's China the third"
