Listen: Chelsea, Dortmund, Clinton discussed on Slate's Hang Up and Listen
"Now. Let's go through that. Let's catastrophes. This or chelsea got totally destroyed. Their defense looked awful dovid louise. They're eric kind of star defender of many years. They sent him away. <hes> he'd try. During the transfer window he went to arsenal and so they had had to replace him with like a week to go. This team looked fairly disorganized. Chelsea is a famously chaotic club is stephan said they're known for stockpiling talent and not necessarily utilising well. They're also under a transfer ban right now so they can bring in any new players. They have a new and inexperienced manager who was once a star player for the club which is never really a formula that works out. This does not seem like the best ast setup for politic y'all saying like oh. We should manage expectations though workman they'll eat. This is not gonna be like a super calm atmosphere for him to develop a rational and organized way right like there's certainly a possibility that this is all gonna work out well and he's going to a play those thirty five to forty games and he's going to be really good but there are also lots of reasons to be worried about this being the place for him to develop one hundred percent and i think it's it's one of those. What are you gonna do like situations. <hes> obviously all those things you said are true. Everything about chelsea is like a powder keg and combustible bustle and there's a lot of possibilities for things to go wrong but in the end what was he supposed to do not go there. I mean who would turn down that opportunity. You know like kim the reporting of the article that i did your clinton was like oh you know i wouldn't have minded if he'd stayed in the bundesliga for another year or two and i guess i like sounds fine from it'd elemental standpoint. It makes them sense like what person would turn down that opportunity. You know what i mean like. He's gotta go there. He's got to succeed on a personal. It'll level if not on a team level and will he ended up staying there for the rest of his career almost certainly not but i am i guess at this point. It's sort of like he's raised the bar on where he goes it. Was you know he's gotten to that level and now the next one after this is presumably at a higher level so i agree with you completely. It's not an ideal situation but i i also don't really know how reasonable would be to say like yeah. He should've just said no. You know and i'm going to push back a little on your josh and say that why are we worried about sort of how he developed. He is developed frigging. Chelsea paid seventy three million dollars to transfer his contract from dortmund. Dortmund was the place where he was developed as a soccer player he went as a teenager. He was the first american to do a billion different things in the bundesliga into the champions league and he has arrived and i don't think judging from what i've seen and read about christian pulisic that he seems intimidated by this. This doesn't josie altidore going to the premier league and shitting the the bed. It doesn't even feel like like landon donovan having cold feet about making a permanent career in europe. I mean a better a better comparison person than donovan is clint dempsey who did thrive in the primarily for several years but again publicity is younger and his ceiling is higher and his skills are better so the opportunity is there. I i don't see why we should be worried about you. Know taking the bubble wrap off of christian pulisic. He's there yeah that's fair and sam you did a good job in your profile of talking about how he really bridles being called a prodigy and wonderboy at this point. He says he's passed that. He's a professional. He's been doing this for a while. My concern is less about out ham with regard to his youth and more you know just relating to being in this club in general like i would be concerned about any player going to chelsea right now just because it doesn't seem like a great environment just like i would be concerned about an n._b._a. Team that's like poorly managed and so i i feel like with club soccer and particular. There's just an enormous amount of talent loss and talent wasted."
