Thorne Jesus, Simon Peter, Simon Peter Simon discussed on Statehouse Happenings
Our first lesson this morning comes from first John Chapter four, beginning at verse 16. Let's listen to God's word for us. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love and those who abide in love abiding God. And God abides and them. Love has been perfected among us in this That we may have boldness on the day of judgment because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love. Perfect. Love casts out fear. Fear has to do with punishment and whoever fear has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us. Those who say I love God. Hate their brother or sisters. Liars. For those who do not love a brother or sister, whom they have seen. Cannot love God whom they have not seen. Commandment we have from him is this Those who love God must love They're brothers and sisters also This is the word of our Lord. Thanks Be to God. You're looking now at the post resurrection appearances of Jesus and we hear yet another story this taken from the Gospel of John 21st chapter beginning at the first verse. After these things, Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Thai beer Ius, and he showed himself in this way. Gather there together were Simon Peter. Thomas called the twin. It's good to see the Thomas has been restored to this gathering. You recall he was absent the night of Jesus first appearance. Nathaniel of Qena in Galilee, the sons of 70, James and John to other disciples as well. I'm not sure why they aren't named here. Simon, Peter said to them, I'm going fishing and they said to him, we'll go with you. They went out and got into the boat. But that night, they caught nothing. Just after daybreak. Jesus stood on the beach. But the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them Children. You have no fish, have you? They answered him. No. He said to them, cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast it and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, it is the Lord. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord. He put on some clothes for he was naked and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish for they were not far from the land only about 100 yards off. When they had gone ashore. They saw charcoal fire there with fish on it and bread. Jesus said To them, bring some of the fish. You've just caught. So Simon Peter went aboard and hold the net is sure full of large fish 153 of them. Find out a fascinating little detail that seems to lend some authenticity to the credence of this story. And although there were so many, the net was not Thorne Jesus said To them come and have breakfast now, none of the disciples there to ask him. Who are you? Because they knew it was the Lord Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. And when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter Simon, son of John You love me more than these? He said to him. Yes, Lord, you know that I love you and Jesus said to him feed my lambs. The second time he said to him, Simon, son of John, Do you love me? He said to him? Yes. Would you know that I love you? And Jesus said to him tend my sheep. You said to him the third time signed Simon, son of John, Do you love me and Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time do you love me? And he said, Lord, you know everything you know that I love you. And Jesus said to him. Feed my sheep. Let us break. God, we give you thanks for the gift of the day for the privilege of worship. And even in our time of separation, we know the unity of your holy spirit that binds us together. And so even now, may we be bound together into the teaching of your word in our reflections may the words of my mouth and made the meditations of our hearts together, Find acceptance in your sight. For it is through Christ and to his honor and glory. We pray it. Men. During these past several weeks, really? Since Easter. We have been looking together the post resurrection appearances of Jesus recall. We've heard of his appearing to Mary at the tomb early that morning. Into two of his followers as they walked on the road to e mails that same day. Later that evening, he appeared to the 12, or at least to the gathered 10 Judas. Absent Now, Thomas absent as well. He appears in the upper room, closed door locked windows. A week later, he appeared again to them this time, with Thomas present to assure him to assure them to assure us that he really was alive and to give that same assurance to us. To all of us who have not seen and yet have come to believe. In our reflections On these appearances we have explored together the nature of faith. And the inevitability of doubt. We've asked questions as to how Christ continues to make himself known to us today and what it takes for us to recognize him in the every day of our lives. And now this morning, we're asking the all important question. So what are we supposed to do with all of this? Or as I ask of you in a recent video, how shall we then live?.
