Listen: Football, National Federation Of State High School, Manassas Park discussed on John Reid
"Okay full disclosure I broadcast high school football on, our sister, station, Fox. Sports nine ten I'm very close to. High school football I loved the, game very much but there has been a decline nationwide in, high school football and it's starting to knock on our door a little. Bit Charles city yesterday it came out that has informed the Virginia, high school league the governing body for high school football for public, schools in Virginia. And it's canceling it's football season due to lack of. Interest from students this is a program that just two years ago went six and four and. Made. The playoffs This, on, the. Heels of a couple of northern Virginia. Schools doing the same Manassas park, and Parkview in sterling now if you get up into Fairfax, county and a lot of the areas in Loudon and like around Ashbourne. And all that all those schools have you know well over three, thousand students just huge schools they're going to be able to come, up with the. Numbers but some you know Manassas park and park Parkview. In sterling or not two of the biggest schools but are not playing varsity football this year Manassas park will do, a junior varsity schedule, this season, but, Charles steady just plain and simply did. Not have the numbers and so folded up its tent for, the season, now there, is a lot of reasons for this and this is a disturbing trend high, school football participation is on the decline nationwide Down four point five percent between two thousand six in, two thousand sixteen, according to data from the national federation of state high school associations now there are several reasons for. This, one is the safety concerns some parents don't want their kids playing football because. Of the. Yeah the and the and the concussions Just kind of taking a step back from the game. Football, because of the violence surrounding it Another reason is the emergence, of lacrosse lacrosse has become very popular it's one. Of the fastest growing. Sports in the country. And some kids. Are that played footballer playing lacrosse there are other reasons this is not new one is specialization some of these. Baseball kids are playing baseball year. Round and their travel coaches. Don't want them playing other sports so you're specializing. In one sport there are, football travel teams a. Lot of you, parents know. About, travel teams my daughter played travel, softball so their softball baseball there's travel teams. Basketball teams well there's also some travel football teams and these, football coaches and their kids play these kids play travel. Football instead of playing high school football and then there is the declining popularity. Of the NFL another one is rising equipment and participation costs and the cost of playing football. There are some things that you have to spend money on and and a lower income area like Charles said that can Be. An issue so there is, no one reason this is going on but it is a clear. Trend here right here in the Richmond area we've had no teams fold. Up shop like Charles city but there. Are schools that are disbanding. Their JV teams there are others that are going to, be on lower numbers and if they get a. Bunch of injuries they're. Going to have an. Issue and then. There are other places where football is thriving and there are a bunch of kids playing in an environment and. Learning all the things that you. Can learn and all the. Valuable lessons that come out of being part of. A football team that come, out of the discipline. Of being a, football player. So, it's going to be an interesting, trend to see if any of the schools. Fold up before the season starts the first games are really, just a week away there are some games to open. The season a week from tonight others a week from Friday and then the. Season really kicks into gear on Labor Day weekend so we'll be keeping an eye on that, foreshore six eighteen NewsRadio WNBA Let's check those trending stories, of the morning from the newsroom here's headlines with Andy.
