Listen: Rockies, Chicago Cubs, Tony Walters discussed on After Hours With Amy Lawrence
"Into center field by Tony Walters. Come story. Third. The Rockies have regained the lead to two one and the top thirteen Tony Walters. What the biggest hit of his career the Rockies have the league. Yeah. You think the biggest hit of his career? How about the biggest moment of his professional life. Maybe the biggest moment of his life all together. Congratulations to Tony Walters. Really amazing. I love these kind of stories. This is why I love sports and when you get into the thirteenth inning of a wildcard game. And there's nobody else left. That's where these stories tend to unfold it's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio Jack Corrigan with the call on the Rockies radio network. The problem, though, the flipside the other side of the coin if you will when you have nobody left. Well, you have to go with the guys that are in the game. And the cubs had made some strategic moves. Joe madden. Smart move by Joe Madden in the eighth inning. Anthony Rizzo gets on with a two-out hit. And he put the speedster in there. As a pinch runner. Why not you've got to Rizzo is slow and at that point you're trailing one to nothing and your entire goal is to push the tying run across. That's your playoff life hanging in the ballots and so Madam subs. Taryn score in as a pinch runner for Anthony Rizzo. Gore properly steals second base, and then he's able to come around and score the tying run in the eighth inning. On an incredible hit from hobby bias. But Taryn score is still the guy who's at the plate. Then to start out the bottom of the thirteenth, and while he almost got on base. Courtesy of a hit by pitch from Scotto. Berg after reveal gore had to go back to the batter's box. And then swung wildly a pitch. That was way out of his, oh when he would have been on base with a walk. That's the craziness of major league baseball the postseason. There are moments that you can look back at and think, oh if only and I truly believe. That the Chicago Cubs are going to be kicking themselves for months over the if only. Not just in this wildcard game. But in the last week. And then the last week is maybe a microcosm of the problems. They've had the entire season. The cubs took over first place in the NFL central in mid July, July seventeenth, we tracked down the date. Brian. Thank you. And they didn't have company atop the NFL central. Meaning they were the solo division leader until the very last day of the regular season that was Sunday. They host game one sixty three and they managed to win. Now, I'm sorry. They lose they managed to host it. But they lose against the brewers. So the brewers ended up and all central champs, and then they turn around they host another game at Wrigley field. And they lose to the Rockies. Ouch. We were tossing around crazy numbers in the newsroom. And John fast who is our anchor on tonight show. Said that the Baltimore Orioles had four games this season in which they scored either zero runs or one run. But second to last in major league baseball this season. The Chicago Cubs. In games in which they scored no more than a run. This is a team. I know they went through a lot of injuries. Every team does what we're talking about. Some of the biggest bats of the last four years in baseball. It's stunning. And now for Joe Madden for the Chicago Cubs. I mean, there's nothing else that that you can do. But let this soak in be crushed by it. And hope that at some point you get over it. We had some opportunities. We just cannot cash in. They pitch really well too. But we need to figure that out in the off season next spring training. My buddy, Dave wills would say we left too much on the bone right there. We've had plenty of opportunities. That's for sure. Joe madden. Following the game. A mentioned the cubs left. Ten men on base. They are one for six with runners in scoring position, including a basis loaded. Was it the seventh inning with the bases loaded? They let the bases loaded. Gosh, all those atings blurred together now. What do you get to the thirteenth? But the cubs only managed six hits. And literally nothing when they got into extras. And so this this painful and coming at home in front of a crowd of forty thousand plus Wrigley field did have a couple of opportunities to explode on John Leicester's last pitch. He got a strike out with the basis juiced. And then of course, the havi Byas hit. But that was the culmination of the eighth inning gore had already got the second on a steal Rizzo. It already gotten the rally started with a hit of his own all they wanted was to go crazy it Wrigley. And instead it was the pitching staff for the Rockies who slammed the door and the defense time after time I can think of a couple incredible play especially on the left side of the infield Nolan air Nado Trevor story. The Rockies used almost all of their nine lives. And they said Tony Walters to the plate in the thirteenth inning. Amazing. So we'll hear from the joyous Colorado Rockies. I just happened to see this on Twitter. I don't follow Tony Walters. Maybe I should I never heard of him. For a few hours ago. But the Rockies re tweeted his video and then major league baseball did as well. He's in the midst of this celebration in the Colorado locker room, so the visiting clubhouse at Wrigley field. And as you can imagine the champagne is flying, and he's got his own little video there. And so now, he's become a cult hero. Anybody wanting to guess, how many followers he has on Twitter? We almost have as many followers on our show account as he has on Twitter. And I'm not saying that that's you know, I'm gonna follow him. Just because I want to see what else he says about this. I'm not saying that to make fun of the guy. I think it's fantastic. This is the biggest moment of his career only that he's operated in relative anonymity. Until now. It's the stuff. Dreams are made of the elbows MLB postseason is just underway. Right. So do we have Tony Walters yet, there's got to be some post game reaction? I know that we have Trevor story and no one Aaron auto. Colorado into its first division series since two thousand nine member losing in the wildcard game a year ago against the Diamondbacks. So bud black and other significant members of the victorious Rockies, and I want to hear from you. A radio is where you can find me on Twitter, and we've got our brand new poll up, although we still have the touchdown of the week poll up too. So if you didn't vote for touchdown Tuesday, you can do that. And then we've got a new poll up asking you which division theories, you are most looking forward to man, this is a tough one. I love the division series because of the drama and the ebbs and flows, and the fact that it's a slow play in a slow burn. And we get some of these incredible pitching matchups to. Although we're decision by the Los Angeles Dodgers that's being questioned all over the place. All right. So anyway, take our multiple polls on our show Twitter after our CBS or on my Twitter. And we'll also put them up on our Facebook page. It's our hump show have any chance to think about that. You'll be able to ask Amy anything in the third hour of our show. I haven't thought about that yet either. I'm still reeling. Not just. From all the information after a thirteen inning baseball game. But because Tuesday's by writing days, so I spent a good portion of the afternoon writing my F L column, and it was a lot of stats that will numbers lots of research. And so my brain's a little mushy is your brain, mushy, mushy,."
