Listen: Brian Dennehy, Cuba, Cliff Callie discussed on The West Wing Weekly
"Could be south Florida. Miami. Miami or south Florida. That's very good point. This guy from the is saying, look, you're gonna get found out. He keeps making references to sort of like a dobacco that Kate was involved in between Miami, south Florida and Cuba. And we don't actually know what that was. In fact, we never find out which normally ever, which is another one of the frustrating things about this very episode. Usually, when they, you know, episode like this culminates in a flashback an another series that flashback would then sort of explained Alba mystery that has led up to that moment or lit up to that scene. You're talking about the final scene in which we're actually in nineteen ninety five point the final final scene is Bartlett, the week that he's giving about Cuba. But yes, penultimate scene is nineteen ninety five we got Brian Dennehy in this episode. An excellent actor, Brian Dennehy is the other person. Besides the guy who's saying, don't move forward with this. The guy has the feeling of you're gonna get stuck again. You're gonna be in trouble just like you were back, then how we don't actually know. And yes, the other person is Senator from Hagen. Yes, I love that the actually consulted Jerry Lewis in the naming of a character Ray Fram Hagen. Senator from Hagen, who is such a sexist pig. He makes Marbury look like Lauria Steinem. No kidding. Cliff Callie goes into take a meeting with him. And he's got an aid come in, and he's basically he's like winking at cliff about how hot and talking about it in front of her in a foghorn Leghorn kind of vernacular session pizza poker, too. I say I say. Yeah. Laid on a bit thick, although certainly such people exist. Sure. And thankfully, they don't limit him to just this one aspect of his character. He's also the person who gives voice to why Castro is so horrible. You know there's all this effort towards diplomacy with Cuba. But it's only really Brian Dennehy character. Who lays it out explicitly when he's talking to Leo? The reason for Cuba's tragic reality is female, Castro vicious, dictator refuses to allow free press free elections who jails even the slightest opposition. I was glad they had him say to that was actually I think this goes pretty good scene between these two old Mavericks, and I, I was glad that they balanced the, the conversation yet, and that, that was where I thought, okay, good. I'm glad that they use Brian Dennehy for something other than in that first scene with cliff. I was worried that he was going to be just a, this buffoonish cartoon character who is going to be straw, man. Yeah. Easy to vilify, but then they. Gave him a significant viewpoint by the way in another attempt to pull something good of something not. So I wanted to mention there's discussion of diet coke in that has cliff orders a diet coke while Fram. Hey, drinks, screwdriver after screwdriver and one of my all time. Favorite tweets is about diet coke. I wanna give it a plug. It's woman Levy who can be found at, at Allison Lebie. SO be y and she tweeted stop making new flavors of diet coke. The original flavor chemicals is already. Which is just three. Oh, how I love that tweet? And every time I drink when I think of her that's good. And she's right. One of the many threads that doesn't pay off is congressman Cabrera who that is what he's done. Polly referenced and yet unclear what the significance of his election and his recount might be. We don't know. It's so unresolved that I feel like it just muddies things up in an unnecessary worried. Like you could just remove all mention of that character, I guess, casts aspersions on frame, Hagans credibility, because it seems that somebody in his some relative is was involved in the recount that Cabrera sister-in-law worked for Fram Hagen and was the chief monitor of the recount, so we have something wasn't kosher with that election, perhaps I dunno. It's so confusing. And maybe there was something there. And maybe there was, there was actually one moment where I noticed an edit, which is not something that I notice often, I can't remember actually another moment where I've seen in this instance, really actually heard something being cut. In the episode. But there's a point where Leo's speaking to CJ. And I wonder if other people will be able to hear it if we just play the audio as an audio at it's an audio edit, sometimes you can tell when at its being made because they cut to a different."
