Listen: Senate, Mitch Mcconnell, Congress discussed on Wake Up Call
"Marshall, good morning. Serena good morning to you. Amy, a new congress convenes today, a new congress convenes, the one hundred sixteenth congress, and it is younger bluer and more diverse than ever you're going to see one hundred and twenty seven women and total serving twenty five of those in the Senate to one hundred and two in the house, and you're also going to see some other I including I two women Muslims coming into congress. They'll actually be taking it with of office on a Koran that belonged to Thomas Jefferson, you're going to see the first native American women and the first African American women from several different states serving in congress as well. And Nancy Pelosi is expected to be elected to speaker of the house again. Yes, we do expect her to pick up that speaker's gavel once again. And after she picks up that gavel in the new classes worn she's going to basically be challenging the president on trying to reopen. The government trying to force his hand by picking up two bills that had previously passed the Senate nearly unanimously and one of those bills essentially would fund all government agencies except the department of homeland security now that Bill would be a second Bill, and they would find that department only for about a month and order to try and come to some agreement on immigration and border security during that time the rest of the agencies would be funded through the end of the fiscal year. Now both of these bills as I said Amy passed the Senate before the shutdown began. But now Mitch McConnell is saying he's not going to pick those two backup with the new congress because he doesn't want to waste their time. Trying to pass something that the president has said he won't sign when did they pass those bills? You said before the shutdown was right before the show is rising for the shutdown day two days before I believe I would have gone then gone over to the Republican controlled house. They never picked those up for a vote. And in the Senate aid pack practically passed unanimously almost every member voting for those bills to push forward now because it's a new congress. The democratic controlled house is now voting on measures that are essentially identical to those ones that passed the Senate, but they will have to go back to the Senate. And that's where Mitch McConnell says they now won't vote for them. Because the president says they don't include money for the five point six billion dollars. He wants for the border wall. And therefore, he's not going to move them forward. Okay. So the bills just to go back. So it's clear because it's all so confusing the back. Okay. So the Bill passed before the shutdown. What is that was in the Senate? So in the Senate they passed two bills right before the shutdown. Those bills would have funded every government agency for the rest of the fiscal year except the department of homeland security and the second Bill would give the department of homeland security about a month a funding to negotiate out some kind of terms on border security after they passed the Senate before the shutdown. They went to the house and didn't go anywhere because at the time the Republican controlled house said there. We're not gonna have the votes for them because they wanted border security. So the house at the time passed a different Bill that included money for border security that went nowhere in the Senate. Now that the house is controlled by Democrats. They're picking up those two bills that passed the Senate that would give these funding breakdowns by separating out the department of homeland security from the rest of the federal government and Mitch McConnell saying they're not going to bring those back into the Senate for another vote because the president says he won't pass them or won't sign them. Okay. Starting the year off with a big fight at four for Pelosi. Are there any detractors or is everybody on board with her? Now, not everybody is on board. She'd probably will see a few a no votes from her caucus, but she is expected to get that speaker's gavel. And after she gets it. We're going to see another kind of odd thing happen. You have a rule change that occurs in congress. And normally that goes through without any real notice. It's basically how they're going to govern in the next house. But we do expect to see them actually see a couple of her members of her caucus voted. Against that rules package because they're upset about a budgeting rule that they says will complicate their efforts to advance progressive legislation. Great fights on both sides of the aisle in between both parties. Exactly. Okay. Great. Thank you so much. Serena Marshall have a great day you as well. Okay. Let's get back to some of the stories coming out of the twenty four hour. KFI newsroom.
