Listen: Mark Wahlberg, Martha Walberg, Chris Ryan discussed on The Bill Simmons Podcast
"The only thing in my Email. The only thing I wrote with, I've never liked you and then they'll linked to review. Mauser wrote about it did not like it. His review made me want to see the movie more. I gotta be honest because. It's added like a really farfetched. Ridiculous premise, and I am always a fan of Mark Wahlberg experimenting with the character versus just being Mark Wahlberg because when he experiments that almost always goes sideways. So that's added. Great. What happened here? Yeah, that's great. I'm in. I'm in for experimenting, Mark Wahlberg. Those are my birds in mild twenty two mar. The best version of Martha Walberg is when he's at dumb guy who's thinks he's smart, right? Yes, we'll be night or or painting gain. And this version, we have a smart version of Mark Wahlberg who knows you smart. So he does the thing where he talks really fast. Yeah, makes all of these cure references to things and it was fun to watch him. Try to do that. There's no big being where he has like a big fight scene or whatever that that doesn't happen in the movie with him. They leave it all to to Lee that the character they're trying to rescue. They let him do all this stuff because he can do all of this stuff leaders. Incredible in the movie, the name, Leanne y. That's a character's name and they should have just turned him loose as much as possible because he's fantastic. So the premise is, does this twenty two miles stretch that kind of have to go through? And it's almost like a video game where they know they have to get through the from point a. point beads, twenty two miles and there's going to be a lot of obstacles and people coming at them. Yeah, that's exactly what it is. I feel like like Walberg and feeder bird that's director, and you know, they've done a bunch of movies already, like hatred, stay Deepwater Horizon. You know there, there was another one that I'm forgetting right now. Yeah, there was a the one where he gets caught in the Mideast. Oh, yeah, lone survivor. That one was really good as I. I think what happened here is they were sitting around, they're like, hey, you remember when we did loans, loans of Ivers Harley, it's hard to watch with all the like blood and guts and everything in it. And I feel like they did, then they're like, hey, we should do that again, but with more people than they just came up with this this plot. 'cause applaud them have anything when you get to the end of the movie like clearly, they only wanted to have a stretch where a lot of people are going to die in a lot of violent ways. And you know, sometimes it works and I think in this case it it worked for the bird Walberg collaborations, whether they keep cranking out I, they definitely went to dinner and Wahlberg while was probably like, hey, man, I want to try something different with this character peoper was like, whatever. Sure, sounds great. Let's do it. You've seen the gambler right with Mark Wahlberg. I have. Yeah. Yeah, it's Chris Ryan. It's like his favorite bad movie. I feel like he's he's watched it way more than than. In than maybe he's lead on, but it has. It's one of those movies that you watch and you go, wow, they were really, really close to get in this one. And then just had a major major stumbles including some of the worst gambling scenes that that we've ever seen. Faith took a couple of swings. Mississippi grind is like if they had done the gambler. Right, Mississippi grind with Ryan Reynolds. No, that's a fun. That's a good movie. I randomly watched the sting this weekend. Because I watched the godfather last week. I was in a hotel room in in Oakland, right? And it had a Netflix thing in the godfathers Netflix cited seen wanna cranked it out and was reminded that it's the greatest movie of all time. So then I was thinking I wanted crank out every best picture Oscar movies since nineteen seventy two. So watch a sting which is Redford Paul Newman right? It solid. It's really dated. It's really old Redford's, great knit.."
