Listen: FBI, Raleigh FBI And Mitnick discussed on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory
"Telephone operator of that particular area. So let's say it was like, Los Angeles hack into Pacific bell and then monitor their switching equipment. So if it technician put in any command do a trace back, I would actually see it. Time and disconnect. So yeah. So what ended up happening is. I was found in Raleigh North Carolina, and like get a house or hotel or something. Nah. I was in an apartment I was living under a different name. I had a driver's license. And I knew identity documents like you, see in your typical spy show. I was looking for work previously under a different name was working for a big law firm in Denver as as assistant admin again, I that was starting my future two years. And no, I had you know, plus hotel wasn't like you see on TV where the fugitive is looking over their shoulder. I was more of like just living under a new identity, and what I would do is. I'd work during the day. Like everybody else to earn a living and at night, I become that hacker exploiting the internet. And once I got Shimamura upset he assisted. I wasn't such a high priority for the FBI. I was like the type of guy. Okay. If he gets pulled over with a tail light out. We'll go ahead and take them, right? What kind of priority? But when she was hacked, it became New York Times front page story, and what had happened is it elevated, the FBI's interesting to capture capturing me. Because now, you know, the story, you know, would you the publicity? The publicity of the entire matter. So as always say, the FBI gets man was arrested and definitely made into an example. I remember when I was in federal court prosecuted a prosecutor had alleged that they had to keep him solitary confinement less I launched the less. I dial up tomorrow at whistling the phone and launch a nuclear weapon. So there was lots of this around the Kevin Mitnick's story. And unfortunately, a lot of us were told to you by federal prosecutors to a federal judge, and we're we're used to, you know, keep me under a high security watching the federal detention center. But when they picked you up were you surprised in were you like outside where were you? Well, actually, I I was working out at the gym. I arrive home around twelve thirty AM. I'm kind of a nocturnal guy. I'd stay up. And around. Let's say Ron one fifteen A M. I just had this weird gut feeling that something bad is about to happen. It was an intuition. So what I did know what was happening if we FBI attract the cellular radio signal to the apartment complex. I was living in in Raleigh called the players club. It was a huge complex. But there are the other side. The only time the side where my apartment was. Because for some reason, that's what they're radio direction. Finding gear said the signals on the other side, they showed the picture my picture of Kevin Mitnick to the management, but they didn't recognize me. So in any event, I have this gut feeling that something just like what I decided to do is. I I walk out my second story apartment and my balcony overlooks the parking lot so stood out. There looked in the parking lot. This kind of trying to see if there was anything weird going on just to calm down my nerves, and at that point that I went out onto the patio opened the door at one thirty morning. United States marshal was looking around the entire building. Because they were trying to find Kevin Mitnick, of course, spotted this guy going outside looking around the parking lot going back in. That's how they caught me on the patio and then eventually the FBI knocked on my door. But yeah, I was definitely surprised. I was I was kind of an actor that night because when the FBI and a team of injured individuals showed up at my door. I pretended to the best of my ability that I wasn't Kevin Mitnick. I I show do identity. I said, I don't know who this Nick Nick is like my looks or completely different than what they had on my wanted poster poster from me and actually. Usually when the FBI comes in, and they know they have their target. They arrest them right away. I had been going for a few hours. And then eventually they said, well, we're not really sure if you're Mitnick or not. But what we wanna do is take you down to the Raleigh FBI office in fingerprint you, and this will confirm whether you're Mitnick or not. And I said sure, I don't mind doing that. But can we do it in the morning and just give me the address where to show up? Right. So where they took me down, obviously to the FBI office. They quickly figured out who I how long were you incarcerated. Other than five years I was in detention center. Yeah. For four and a half years, and this was without trial. Because there are a lot of because of the list surrounding my case, they didn't wanna give my defense attorney access to the evidence. You know, what they call discovery? And the reason the government used was he can have the secret files that might be related to national security, even I was never accused of doing anything deleted that alter national security and the government wanted me to decrypt the files because I haven't been tripped it on my computer.."
