Listen: Seattle Seahawks, Russell Wilson and Seattle discussed on Reiter than You
"Looking for victories after some struggles in the first game. And to talk about the Seahawks and welcome in Ben Baldwin. He follows the Seahawks for the athletic bad. How're you doing tonight? How are you guys doing? We're doing great thanks for jumping in for a couple of minutes usually in years past when teams looked at the Seattle Seahawks coming in you talk about the defense and the tough defense and the offensive weapons and Russell Wilson. How is Seattle? And you know, how is the team coming into this season? I know last week and then work out the way they wanted to buy the where where are they this season coming in as opposed to previous years because it seemed like the defenses deteriorated a little bit. You only got one or two guys remaining from that. Good defense. Russell Wilson's out there looking for wide receivers. Yeah. That's pretty much have happening. Any any of of the past here that you think of have a court player aside from breathable skin and Earl Thomas, they're all either not on a team anymore injured. So it it's kind of a tall task going into Chicago injury report today, Bobby Wagner was a new addition joining k day, right? So that both of their linebackers and and both of their outside corners of the well, I didn't practice. So there's not a lot of healthy players left on the Seahawks really concerning because it's only the second week of the season. You know, when people hear this kind of I don't know if you call it a stat, which is fact, I think a lot of times people kind of look at it, and they go. Wow, I didn't really think of it because he's so youthful. Pete Carroll's the oldest coach in the NFL. What do you think of p Carroll in how he relates to the fan base in and where the Seattle franchisees going because he was at one time one of the best coaches in the league. But how do they view him? Now. Yeah. That's a good question. I think anytime a coach win the Super Bowl there's a multi year grace period. So if you think of a five year grace period or something, that's that's right about coming up on that. So I I think people are starting to ask questions more whether his bio can succeed in the NFL whether his vision for a run heavy team succeed in in the modern NFL, which is becoming more and more of a passing league. He really wants to run the ball. They went on a higher price on. So I I think there are a lot of questions around here Pete. And he's really over the offseason with all about hitting putting his fingerprints on the team in and taking control over what he wanted the team to be again. So there's a lot of him this year a with how they perform Ben Baldwin from the athletic. He follows Seattle Seahawks. Joining us here on ESPN one thousand and one thing that the athletic does a great great job with and they do it here in Chicago. They do it obviously Seattle because I went and checked it out. You guys do a great job using video to make your points. And I was reading your article from the other day talking about Earl Thomas and the interception. Just went to him. It was probably one of the easier interceptions. That'll get but you talked a lot about how Earl Thomas in the game made things happen. Just by his mere presence being out there. Could you talk about that a little bit? Yeah. That's right. So this is the third season a row where he missed some snaps for various reasons and every time he's not on the field, the Seahawks defensive substantially worse. And it's not always about the place targeting him. It's about the scheme that his presence on the field allows data. So when he's on the field almost always playing a single high faith and a lot of ground cover, but the Seahawks are comfortable putting him in that position because he's shown over and over again is capable of covering background. Now when he's not on the field at least in Denver. They went to more to high safety looks and that against the run they're not as strong, and they really got gas to the run game against Denver. And it's just not the defense that it's not peak defense. So what are known for his discover three defense with their single high safety and when Thomas on the field, they can't do that. Now perspective. The hope is that he won't have to be held out for any snap after missing training camp and preseason. I don't know if they're planning on having a play the whole game. But I will be definitely be something to monitor during the game. Is there a rift between the defensive players and then Russell Wilson within the organization. That's a great question. There has certainly been reporting from former players that there was a rift. So in the most recent I think it was Sports Illustrated. Yeah. The the primary sources for that. Where I think Richard Sherman Antonio McDaniel, neither one of whom are on the team anymore. But it anytime you have. One player who gets so much more attention and pay an accolade which is the quarterback position in the NFL. Then there is this scope or these kind of issues to crop up is the first time a team which was perceived to be carried by their defense, though. I don't know if it's still there anymore and. Scott rid of a lot of players over the AUSSIE. And perhaps that was part of what was happening. But as far as what's happening this year. I haven't heard anything about that. But things also tend to come out after the fact anyway, so. It has been a follow up to that is being in Chicago one thing that I've always read and heard about is that Russell Wilson's a bit fake kind of phony do his teammates boom that way or does everyone within the team. They they love playing with Russell Wilson. I haven't heard of any. Way or or even anyone who is close to him. And and of course, unbiased sources, right? At least from what I've heard he he's a genuine person that doesn't mean he isn't. He comes across as corny and very police, and it's hard to really know. Really feel like you actually know him. But I haven't heard of anyone saying like this January. He might be an awkward person. But it's not like he's putting on an act is at least, that's the sense that I get how how are they gonna protect Russell Wilson. They didn't do a very good job of it last week. And I know they had von Miller chasing him down. He had three sacks of the six that times. They were able to get to Russell Wilson. But the bears now have Khalil Mack. And they have a, you know, some pretty nice pass rushers of their own. How is the offense of land going to be able to protect Russell Wilson? Honestly, probably not. I don't see any reason to think that the bears. Have it worse pass rush? Then the Broncos, even if you think von Miller is better than Khalil Mack. Which is probably a pretty debatable. The bears do have other paths to. So if you leave a right tackle Germain one on one with Khalil Mack. Like they did with von Miller last week. Then I don't see any reason to expect why we would see something different. So. Maybe they will try chipping more with the running back. They're trying to get the ball out there. But if they do what they did last week, and I don't see any reason to expect any different result. What's the latest with the Seahawks in their deal with linebacker, Michael Hendricks? The team. I I I'm guessing they signed him because they want him to play this week. They're both of their starting linebacker, Bobby Wagner, an Katie right? Neither one of them practice today. And Katie, right. It almost certainly not gonna play. It sounds like he has a multi week injury. Bobby Wagner was a new injury report today. So they're really thin linebacker and their rookie Kim Griffin who is filling in for Katya right last week really struggled against Denver. So even the backups didn't look great. So from that perspective, you can understand why they starting caliber linebacker on the street and stack them up, and they have to think about how comfortable they are the actress oh here to get somebody who admitted to insider trading. See also have a guy that Chicago Bears fans are familiar with. Now, a lot of people love this guy. Other people thought he was a pain, obviously has moved around a lot. But he caught a touchdown pass had a couple of catches house. Brandon Marshall fit with this offense. Yeah. So like on defense, but very thin receiver. So they need any help. They can get Doug Baldwin hurt. And he had a knee injury that was kind of nagging hem. So they shut them down for pre-season. And then last week he heard of other knee. So is not going to be in this game. And behind it behind him. There's not a whole lot. So it looks like Brandon marshal bite emerge as Russell Wilson favorite target. He had the most targets out of the NEC receiver was six. I think last week. So hugh. This is one of the things I was probably most wrong about over the years. And I didn't think he had much left in the tank, and I was pretty skeptical when the Seahawks, but if he were there, they they would just have nothing receiver. So it it's kind of a good thing for the Seahawks video of their a lot of people here in Chicago kind of a -ssume that because the bears played so well in the first half against Green Bay that. They're just gonna beat Seattle on Monday night in Seattle, and in your opinion. What do people say coming into this game facing off against the Chicago Bears? People are pretty pessimistic. And a lot of it is due to the injuries. There's all of the the big household name Seahawks in Seattle. Not all but almost all are either injured or dealing with injuries. And. And the players that were on the field and fire a lot of confidence based on their performance last week and. Hey thing another top tier elite pass rusher in Khalil Mack. It's pretty scary. And so I think people are pretty nervous. This was supposed to be the quote, unquote, you'd be part of a CR schedule with the Broncos bears, and they start with that before you getting to the beat of their schedule all the games against the Rams, the forty Niners and Packers at all these other teams, then I think there will be some degree of panic and Seattle. So there's a big game for both teams. You never wanna start to an NFL and. I have no idea what to expect. Honestly, man. We really appreciate jumping on for a few minutes. And we'll see what happens Monday night. Thanks a lot. Yep. Looking forward to it. Ben Baldwin from the athletic. He follows the Seattle Seahawks. And if you thought negatively about the Seahawks coming in Ben didn't give us anything to make you feel better about, and you know, they do have a ton of injuries. And you know, you think about it. And you know, I watched parts of their game the other day to try and do a little bit of scouting do you get ready for this bears game? And they're they're just not very good at all. And Earl Thomas is a guy that you know, they do a great job as I mentioned with the athletic chances to watch. If you follow the athletic, you subscribe the way that they break down the way that Dan Durkin and Kevin fish pain breakdown plays and situations. And all these kind of things do a great job. And Ben Ben did a great job to show. How important to the defense? Just having Earl Thomas on the field. He's fantastic. And he's so much fun to watch. And you know, you look at this game. And I think a lot of it will come down to the quarterback play. And how good can Russell Wilson b because if the bears can slow them down. Just a little bit. They should win this game on Monday night. Yeah. That'd be nice. It'd be nice to get a victory with Brian or lacquer halftime big ceremony for the hall of Famer. We come back. We'll talk about a few other things going on in the NFL. There's a baseball don't. It was kind of surprising me, we'll discuss that more. Chris black Fred Hubner under the hood on."
