Listen: Arizona, Big League Aa Leagues, Baseball discussed on The Twelve Six Podcast
"I GonNa make a team because if I'm not I'm going to go home because I need to make money because spring training. We don't make any money any money so no money so the money is running out right about midway through spring training. I got nothing Carolina's. Get rid of. Have this baby in Jeff's like no. You'RE GONNA you're. You're making the team. You'RE GONNA go to double A. and I was like sweet. Yes like I've made it. You know like I made the Big League Aa Leagues. You all everybody talks about is making they can double edged up ball. Yeah get out of a ball. People get called up from double a the big league so it's like you get that one step away right so when he you told me that. I was like wow I made it you know was able to pitch really well and double A. That year in two thousand twelve. We had a really a good team a lot of big leaguers on that team until Sir in got went up to AAA and for me. I never thought about making the big leagues it's like. I I remember telling this sometime to somebody about when I was in like little league. All I wanted to do was play from high school team. I wanted to play for thought. Oh Hi a one of the where the green and white be a tiger like those guys looked up to right and when I got to high school all I wanted to do was play frail issue. Those guys looked like I never had like a big league team or a big league player that like that's what I wanted to be. It was always just like the next level you know and then when I got into Lsu what until my senior year when these teams started talking to me. I was like Oh man. Maybe I can play professional baseball. I hadn't really thought about it and then once I got in freshman baseball was all about pitching being well enough to go to the next level and so when I finally got to triple a two thousand twelve it was like wow the next level is the big leagues you know and I was like I never really thought about it right so yeah but it was you know we're one of those like cliche stories where we had completely run out of money and Caroline I had I had had my daughter already at this point. She was young obviously and we she called me one night was was like we were completely out of money and she didn't have money to buy diapers and so we had to call my uncle to borrow a couple hundred bucks so she could go to the store and Njit. She was crying on the phone that day. In that night is a night that I got called up to the big leagues crazy crazy the time that is nuts how that happens golly that but it is like a Kinda poetic thing in a way because spent all these years grind and you've got to do all of this extra work in the season and in the offseason both you and your wife have multiple oh jobs and then Bam as soon as the through the money runs out and it was it was like an overwhelming like intimidate experience for me too because I had never been into big league camp had never backed up any big league games right so like I don't know anybody. I don't know I mean I didn't know anybody in the team not on the coaching staff like so so I walk in the Dugout in San Francisco and got called up and people are looking at me like who's this guy who who are you who is this. It's like wear name tags yeah I I know I don't know y'all watch on TV. You know like I don't know who I am so so yeah I mean I I felt really Kinda. OUTTA my league to start who you know like the whole people talk about now like rookies like you're pitching to like the back of people's baseball cars and not to the actual individual. Ah Without a doubt did that it was rookie. Do you remember facing somebody being like how am I supposed to get this guy out. I'll never remember facing Philadelphia and you face in Chase Utley Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard you know and just being like I don't know what I'm doing. These guys like are GonNa. Eat Me Alive you know and they did a lot of the odds really struggled about my rookie year because I just didn't. I didn't think that you know I didn't think I belong. I guess yeah so you know. Confidence goes a long way in sports for sure especially in baseball doubt right. I like guys like you and I like not being the hardest throwers fake it. You know figure out what you're doing. Better Kazuki pretty deep pretty quick. My coaching college always used to say hey. You're going out. There and you don't know whether you're going to have shotgun her salt rifle or pocket knife knife but you gotta fight with whatever you got so if you've got a pocket knife you'd better come out swinging. You and I feel like we've been doing that for years now. That's a good analogy. I like that I mean. We've kind of got this very similar stories. Once we got to the big leagues got thereafter a lot of a lot of time and tribulation in the minor leagues but pitch really well in the minor leagues come through and then got to the big leagues and struggled struggled struggled for a couple of years what from the rockies to the diamondbacks I went from the mets to the rockies so we like just missed each other in that little time period but then you pitched really well with Arizona I remember in twenty fourteen I had gotten picked up by the Astros and I was pitching with the Astros and throwing the ball pretty well and you're pitching with with Arizona and after that season I remember looking at the transactions and seeing your name pop ups in claim by way claimed off waivers and me me and obviously a lot of other people your team and across baseball were like why. Why did you get designated. Why is Arizona kind of giving up at this point 'cause he had thrown the ball well but we were lucky enough to claim you with the Astros. Yeah there was a lot of turnover in Arizona. At that point they had changed managers. They were changing managers is that you know they. They were also a lot of different things changing directors and so in that turnover. I just think they were looking to get guys is in there that they wanted you know and me. I was just kind of a casualty of that and I remember I had. I had a buddy who is in the front office with the MARLINS. At the time I was working out in the off season and he's like he gives me a call and he's like hey man your own waivers. I was like what because I had already been the waiver process with Colorado right and got picked up Arizona's the best thing that ever happened to me. Goto place got to pitch you know almost two full years in the big leagues with Arizona Pitch Pitch. Well and I'm like really I'm on waivers. He's like they don't tell you when you WanNa tell me he just knew because he was in the front office correct so he was able to give me a heads up up like hey you're coming off today at one o'clock eastern so right in my time in Louisiana so I'm sitting there in my kitchen and my house my all right so I go work out and you know let caroline know. Let's keep a couple of my buddies. No whatever family like hey I'm on waivers now. It's like any wacky going anywhere karate nine other teams and sure enough get a phone call from Arizona and the I think I don't remember who it was assisted the GM it wasn't it wasn't Dave Stewart who call me but just kind of told me hey I was reclaimed by Houston. You know best the locker. Whatever and I was like all right. You know I remember just kind of being like I remember asking him. My Hey like why did you put me on waivers. You know he kind of beat around. The Bush didn't really tell me just kind of didn't really have anything for me but it's kind of like look man like ours. You wouldn't worry about it. You know like I'm pretty sure like all twenty. Nine teams actually claimed you. That's kind of cool yeah so find out. It's the Astros Call Carolina my hey you could pick anywhere from me to go play. Where would it be. She's like I guess aside picked Houston. I was like well believe it or not. We're going Houston so it. Kinda worked on one of those situations where I tell guys this all the time like I told Taylor white the other day. I said you taller guy designate. I said Look Man Alive in here. have been have been designated. K A lot of us and I've been designated twice and both times or three times I said in an all three times on is the best thing that ever happened to me so it's like you never know what's on the other end of of what you've got coming so don't don't don't don't take take it as a negative right you know just wait and let things play out for sure so yes so it turned out great for me and go to spring training with Houston thinking. I'M GONNA to make the team and then I get there and it's like I wasn't. I was not planning on making the team and this joke all the time but you know Josh fields his hamstring. I'm I'm here appreciate it failed to negotiate a man he folded Hammy with like two days ago and spring training and I got to make the team and then just kind of you know realize my back was against the wall and the second that he was GonNa get come off the DL. It probably was going to be my spot. He was gonNA come after and was able to pitch well enough to where you know kind of saying. I didn't Arizona when I got caught up zone was for JJ puts his elbow and so usually on that you're on your on borrowed time when those kind of situations you see the writing on the wall sooner this guy's coming off the fifteen day or whatever it is like. I'm going back to the minor leagues unless you can turn enough heads and make yourself important enough that they can't send you down right and both of those cases I was able to like I said timing and health like the timing of pitching really well allowed me to stay both times so you know it worked out and now I have a couple numbers for you. Since coming to."
