Listen: NFL, Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger discussed on SportsCenter AllNight
"Hanging out with us we're really proud of that so don't forget that's coming up this weekend so the NFL quarterback conversations obviously everywhere it's time for straight talk brought to you by straight talk wireless Ben Roethlisberger having season ending elbow surgery and it was interesting because I saw a tweet yesterday from Mike Tannenbaum at reminding us how many quarterbacks have already gone out with injury over the course of the season and when you start to think about the quarterbacks that have gone down and in you're not just talking I mean Sam Donal drew Brees Ben Roethlisberger we forget that Nick Foles I mean it falls got all that money and we forget the band he was already out you start to look up and down the board you have starting quarterbacks falling by the wayside left to right now and you look which I ride between right before the season so suddenly we're in a world where. your getting I don't know Jacoby were set we're looking at the possibility of major matches on TV that are things like your Kobe percent versus Gardner mention. people are lining up for that a month ago where they. I mean that that's real right in two years ago that's why rating started to tank nobody wanted to make it about so much but really when we look at ratings a couple years ago the biggest story line was that quarterback's were injured brands were injured we weren't seeing the Aaron Rodgers we're seeing backups across the board we weren't seeing the big names we were seeing secondary players that just couldn't play as well and let's face it without that without big stars a quarterback the NFL is not as watchable that's why they protect them so much. but it's a reminder that things have changed and it's a reminder that quickly the landscape across the NFL is changing. we live in a video game culture right are you there was a spot where everything needed to go mad we want a big plays big hits everywhere you see ray Lewis on the cover of Madden because what everybody wanted was big hitting guys on the defensive side of the ball. and then as rules changed an offense became even more explosive all of a sudden it became all about quarterbacks going touchdowns wide receivers with one hand catches everybody wants to see video game catches everybody now wants to see video game quarterback plan who gives you that to the highest possible level who gives you video quarterback play. future hall of Famer Patrick homes right Baker may feel last night although I question some of his accuracy. he's that highlight will you have to watch every time he touches the ball because you're not sure what he's going to do. that's what we crave. and that's why young quarterbacks again have become such a storyline Kyler Murray's owing to. please put a big numbers. he's looked electric at times doing it. and we're infatuated. now we get Pat Shurmur the head coach of the giants coming out and saying that they're going to analyze everything every single position every week is up for grabs they may keep you are you and they may not every position is evaluated every single week. think about that a few years ago. a few years ago if I was telling all. the jags the colts the saints the Steelers. all lose their starting quarterback the jets and now he lives out to be six major franchises with major names and you're coming in and saying all they're all gone what is the end of gonna do and instead there's just sort of this mom or like that's cool. I that's what it feels like. yes it doesn't feel that way this morning the Steelers fans I understand that but even Steelers fans are looking at what did I just tell you. the fact that the Steelers made the blockbuster trade last night to get make offense back Fitzpatrick they give up a first round traffic is a statement and how much they believe in Mason Rudolph. and then you start to look across the border eight young quarterbacks in the NFL and that's what we're in fact you would have always infatuated with the young movement. so I got to be so careful in judging young quarterbacks we were infatuated with Jamison Marcus James Winston Marcus Mariota now I think you can make a compelling case that neither of them will be on their team next year. we were infatuated every time in a young quarterback comes out we fall in love until they give us a reason to fall out of love is like a new relationship for your best friend that falls in love too quickly you know three weeks and he's gonna be like ours I'm telling you this is the one over and over think she can be my wife and then six months in is like man I don't like at all you can put the dishes away just not a claim. thank you she can have a conversation with me about anything on a lighter. that's where we are as a society with our quarterbacks every single time. and and sometimes is warranted and it lasts and that's what it feels like it's happening right now because matcha bones for the second straight year looks so special. it's easy for us to look at it and say Hey don't worry about it big been over here he's gone but it's okay because we got Baker who needs Big Ben we have bigger Lamar Jackson is doing things that we've never seen at the quarterback position see Baltimore watch Baltimore now. it's actually a a you know there's there's a a glory of riches here. for the for the NFL that I don't know that they've experienced in a long time. the forty Niners a resurgent too in scoring points and everybody the plan trash teams but now you can look at and say the beautiful Jimmy G. might just be as good as people thought it was going to be. that we become so infatuated with the next generation of quarterbacks but what happens when the next generation quarterbacks actually lives up to the hype.."
