Levi Norwood pleaded guilty this morning and fakir county circuit court to the Valentine's Day, 2020 murders of his mother, Jennifer, and his brother, Wyatt, he'll be sentenced in November. The defense is about to present its case in the trial of admitted school shooter at Nicholas Cruz. His lawyers will get their chance to present why they believe he murdered 14 students and three staff members at marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida for four years ago. They hope to get him sentenced to life without parole instead of death. He pleaded guilty in October to 17 counts of first degree murder. The trial is only to decide his sentence. Montgomery county students are headed back to school in one week, leaders there are focused on student safety ahead of the new academic year. Students should have what Montgomery county school superintendent monifa mcknight calls a psychologically safe school environment. And that means that they have to feel safe when they're walking into our schools and that means they have to feel safe as they are engaging in their communities. After January shooting inside magruder high school, parents and students called for changes to address safety and at last week's announcement about a gun buyback event in Rockville, mcknight said, we hope to launch a campaign to educate our young people about gun prevalence, gun laws, and the consequences of guns.
