Listen: Yankees, Baseball, Brian Brian Cashman discussed on Outside the Lines
"Welcomed outside the lines. I'm Jeremy SCHAAP COMING UP Gary Cole- Don's The pinstripes at his ceremonial introduction. Is Yankee mega signing says about the state of baseball but I it is our big story. The pro bowl rosters have been announced the big winners the Ravens with twelve selections which makes sense since Baltimore has has league's best record at twelve and to leading the way the ravens remarkable second year quarterback Lamar Jackson the favored the MVP award with two games to play Jackson Jackson. One of the six quarterbacks selected for the roster's along with the Shawn Watson Patrick Mahomes in the AFC and Russell Wilson Aaron Rodgers and drew brees in the NFC. Four of those six quarterbacks African American. That's never happened before for the pro bowl and it is emblematic of what. We've been calling the year of the black black quarterback for more we. Welcome Jason We tear. NFL writer at the UNDEFEATED DOT com. We've been writing about this story. Line all season season. Jason Your reaction to those pro bowl rosters being announced wait. Oh Jeremy You and I've talked about this before. We knew that this was going to be an incredible credible year for African American quarterbacks. And what we're seeing is the result. The combination of all the effort throughout the season the training camp the preseason and now you have this group that is representing the AFC everyone of the quarterback slots. And I really wasn't surprised. I'll be honestly Jeremy. I would have been surprised. If that wasn't the breakdown would have been more gratified to see Dak Prescott. Many you're saying he's the biggest snub of all the pro bowl players who were not all the players who were not named to the rosters. I should say Jerry. I think there's definitely arguments if you may the Dak Prescott should be on this team. Now people look at Aaron Rodgers and and Raja's largest team has a much better record. But when you look at the advanced metrics when you look at things yards granted Aaron Rodgers having a great year very few interceptions release awesome touchdown passes but you can make a very strong credible argument. I think TAB Dak Prescott on this team and when you're talking about the year of the black quarterback when you're talking about this culmination as you put it of so many different factors. It's it's not coincidence. It's part of a trend but where does it all start. How did we get to this point now in twenty nineteen when we were a tier ten years ago? Forty years after the first black quarterbacks in the NFL Jimmy. I think is very interesting. A lot of people point to the Michael Vick draft in two thousand one and say that when Michael Vick was taken number one overall overall first African American to be taken that spot that that was the beating but other people point to nine hundred ninety nine when three African American quarterbacks were taken in the first round Donovan mcnabb Nab Akili Smith and data culpepper. And say hey look that really signal that the League was shifting. Its thinking in terms of what these guys could do ultimately four four franchise. So there's that debate but a lot of people will tell you one thousand nine hundred nine is really are jumping off point. What does this news the four out of six six and the arguments whether Prescott should be on the roster? And I'd say about changing perceptions about black quarterbacks perceptions that after all for so a long held back black quarterbacks Yeah Jeremy and that's the thing is it's the perception it's what do we think of these players as the NFL commemorates memories just one hundred season. It's not a coincidence that that when you have a roster loaded with guys who are African American quarterbacks it's really about showing that okay the League now believes it's not just that these guys have physical tools but they have the leadership they have the heart. They have the ability to lead franchises. This is and I think that's such a significant thing. We've had black quarterbacks for many years but we're talking about is guys who are stars who are going to get these hundred two hundred million dollar contracts contracts and in the case of Patrick Mahomes and can be franchise players that organizations build around so we talk about perception. The perception now is look. We'd better go get one of these guys can do these things because they can lead us to great things. Jayson read of the undefeated reporting on the year of the black quarterback as he has been throughout throughout the season. Jason thanks as always joining us a big morning in the South Bronx New York Yankees formerly introducing their most recent acquisition. The right handed and Clean Shaven Garrett Cole who agreed last week to deal for three hundred twenty four million over nine years three time all star Cole. Who is twenty nine is coming off his best season? Twenty wins and a League leading two point five Oh average for the AL champion Houston Astros cold calls this move to the Yankees a dream fulfilled. There's a process here that Brian spoke to and that he just alluded to a couple of minutes ago. Go about trying to bring the best people at each individual position to surround everybody with the best opportunity to succeed. I think they've demonstrated that certainly only through Bryant's tenure over the last two decades so it instills a lot of confidence as a player when you hear those things and it doesn't unhurt to play for your favorite team. The Yankees haven't won a world series or so much as a pennant in ten years stuck on twenty seven world series title since two thousand nine forty five years after New York ushered in the era free agency signing of hall of fame starter. Catfish Hunter who would help them win. Two world series. They are again making a big bet on a strong right. Are we welcome terrance Moore. He is a national sports columnist for Forbes DOT COM and. I'm assuming you would shave your mustache for three hundred twenty four million dollars when you I think so Germany's a handsome mustache mustache. Thanks very much. Let's be honest what's going on here and I'm GONNA use a Christmas analogy here. You've you've heard of Ebony Scrooge of course right I Manuka Pool yes if compared me to them well. I'm not sure whether it's still the ghost of Christmas pass. We have the ghost of Yankees Pass. George Steinbrenner okay okay. He's haunting his two sons. Saying get it done. You mentioned not won the World Championship in ten years which is discussing the Yankees considering that the Yankees are the the most viable team of Major League Baseball at four point. Six billion dollars. Okay and get this. I mean you got a small market team by the Kansas City royals. They've won a world sources the Yankees. They had to get off of this money here and go for their what people calling their great white will endure cold. But isn't this exactly the kind of contract that Brian Brian Cashman who has been the GM for more than two decades. The kind of thing that for years he was shying away from because the evidence suggests that. There's no way you know history to suggest that this is a good investment. You might get a couple of good years. You might get something out of it. The way they did were see Sobat. The ten years go he won the world series right at the beginning of that big deal but this represents a shift in strategic thinking from cashman. Doesn't it an Randy Levine and ownership. Well I mean no doubt about it and it's not about spending the money part of it is about. Who Do you spend money on? Okay let's go back in time. They spent the money on a guy named Reggie Jackson. Yes and I think that turned out pretty well. So so it's all it's all about that. How you allocate one point six million dollars build a difference? This is a little bit different so I mean here's the thing two right turns I mean the Yankees. They're worth so much. They are are capable of spending this money but ultimately when they look at their balance sheet and a few years from now if Garrett Cole doesn't work out how are they going to approach. Things at that point to the Yankee does too with all these teams. I mean if you look at what the Angels Do did here with Rodion the random rather than I mean. There's a whole lot of money to spend four one guy playing third base or any position for that matter but they've got the highest paid player in baseball. Aw Saint Roster and Mike Trout and what if the angels done nothing wherever okay so again we get back to. What are you spending money on? And how are you're trying to fill out your roster eight hundred and fourteen million dollars for those three free agents last week. All clients have Scott bores and this is when we talk about baseball not being relevant in the national sports discussion people not paying attention to the world series the All Star game not being a cultural event anymore. So so how are we supposed to read. There's there's all this money in the game. Players are getting rich teams. Have the money to spend it but but it's not like baseball. We don't talk about it. Focus on the way we once did. What does that say about the game and the health of the game? And you've got this contradiction going on here Jeremy. Baseball attendance have dropped drop every year for the last twelve years. In spite of the fact this past year had all those home runs was supposedly brings people out to the ball games but this is very simple. What's going on here? The media rights fees okay. It's a national television contract. The regional contracts and low contracts. They're getting a bundle. These owners. Okay they got."
