Listen: Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns And Urban Meyer discussed on WAOK Programming
"A whole lot to do. And obviously it is December eight th two thousand eighteen so we're in all football mode the college football season not in a hiatus because you do have army navy coming up later today. And then later this evening, you do have the Heisman. Trophy presentation. And I was at the media. Vail ability yesterday with two Tunga vilo also Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Murray. So I got a chance to talk to the finals we'll play a little bit from Tonga by Loa later on in the program. So you have some happenings at college football, not as busy, obviously as the last few weekends, but you get closer and closer to ball season. We now know what the college football playoff will be with Alabama and Oklahoma little going up against Kyla Murray. And to a wolf why he made that clear when I did speak to him yesterday. And then on the other side, you do have Clemson going up against Notre Dame with two undefeated football teams. And we talked about this last week what the top four would be we expected it to be those four teams. And that's where we have arrived. I know if you are a Georgia fan, you could make the argument and Georgia to me is the top four team in college football on the eye test. But they did lose the SEC championship game. When they were up fourteen twice. So therefore, I had a feeling they were not going to get into college football playoff in Ohio State. It came down to Oklahoma and Ohio State, Ohio State may have better quality wins. But with that being said Oklahoma's only loss on the year was the Texas. They did avenged that in the big twelve championship game. And you look at highest state there. One loss was to Purdue and they got blown out in that. But ballgame so that is what kept them out of the college football playoff. So with that being said, though, the big news of the hostages. We have good show for you coming up, obviously in about thirty five minutes. We'll be joined by John Kuhn, the former Green Bay Packers fullback, and we'll get his take on Mike McCarthy being fired after the Sunday lost to the Arizona Cardinals. And then from an in about three forty a m eastern one forty A Pacific. We will talk to twelve forty. Am pacific. We will talk to Davis Brown. The third year linebacker for the Los Angeles. Chargers them also have some. For you from Tunga by law is so a lot of football guests a lot of football talk. But from last weekend when we signed off on Sunday. Urban Meyer is still the head football coach of Ohio State. Now, we knew the Browns had a head coach opening in you Jackson being fired. And that's a few weeks old. And then you have the Packers with Mike McCarthy. He was still the head coach of Green Bay. So you had two jobs that eventually became open not open at the time moments quickly filled when they had the plan in place urban retires and takes over Ryan day. But now the Packers job is open. So we'll get to the Browns and the Packers in just a second. Is we have an interesting conversation about them. But let me just start off a derby Meyer so urban Meyer retires and and by buying that. We're never going to see urban Meyer again on a college football sideline. No. If you listen to me Wednesday. Framing lawrence. I do believe that we'll see urban Meyer coach again, he's fifty four turns fifty five on July tenth take a few years off. Maybe Notre Dame becomes available. Maybe USC becomes available and that desire that obsession is still there to coach. And I think he returns if he's able to go play golf is able to relax, and he doesn't miss it. Then he doesn't have to return. We know what his legacy is. In terms of on the field urban Meyer is one of the great coaches when you look at what he was able to do, and he doesn't have many losses on his resume. When you combine them all up with bowling green with Utah, Florida and Ohio State and the two big jobs being Florida, Ohio State won national championships of Florida and one with the highest state. So he'll coaches final game in the Rose Bowl up against Washington. And then. Will hand the program over to Ryan debt, but am I going to sit here and tell you without a doubt that I'm going to believe this retirement, not so much now the health does factor into it? But I would bet you that if he was not suspended by the university. Maybe things are a little bit different. And also he is very close with Ryan day. And he probably thought with the way that things were playing out the help these activists situation that yeah, you could make a case that was a good time to go because you have Ryan day who's thirty nine Ryan day is someone that has learned unto you. And he's learned from other people to chip Kelly. Steve adagio who is an urban Meyer guy and has experienced are higher. So Ryan day probably felt good given the job over to him and it, and it's someone that he likes. But when you look at her but Meyer, we've been through this before. And sure when you talk about the legacy of urban Meyer, there's other things to delve into other than just wins and losses in terms of wins and losses. There's not too many people better than him. However. Off the field problems do exist with the handling of the situation and the many arrests that did happen at Florida. So would I be surprise when I be shocked would I be an awfully returns one day to college coaching. Absolutely, not I would actually expect it. I think it's going to be next year. Probably not but two three years down the road. Definitely some that could play into the factor. So that's the highest state sore? But that was one job that was filled, and maybe you don't love Ryan day, the nice job in the interim. But time will tell with Ryan, Dan. He's one of those young innovative offense mines and his story. His success stories the one New Hampshire Boston College temple with the eagles with the forty Niners. And then worked his way up since two thousand seventeen with Ohio State or now will be their head football coach for this upcoming season. And if your highest state fan. The like the move the not like the move. What do you think? The main reason is that urban Meyer retired. You give us a call at eight five five two two four CBS. But what I really want to get into when we talked about the changes in the coaching in the coaching world. It's the Packers and the Browns right now. So I didn't interview on Wednesday. That you may have heard about by. Now, we had on the station. And if you didn't I'll basically give you but the big takeaway was Bruce Arians on. And there was all this speculation after the Packers fire Mike McCarthy that may be Bruce Arians could be a candidate for the Packers job. And I asked Bruce when he was on the show on Wednesday. Do you have an interest, and he said, no, no interest at all. And then when I followed up in reminded him that it was a good job. He's he agreed that it's a good job. But he just had no interest. And he's the only way which is something he said before to a few other outlets only way that he returned to coaching is with the Cleveland Browns, and a big reason because of that is because of the love affair that he has with the Cleveland Browns fans, and that's what he was willing to share. So it got me thinking. Because if you would've told me a few years ago that the Packers and Browns job would be opened up and someone that has been a coach of the year before twice. I would say that he'd rather have the Browns job then the Packers job. Basically, I would have never believed you because the Browns of the Browns they've been the Browns because of that for a long time and the Packers have Aaron Rodgers and BRUCE'S a different cat. We know that and BRUCE'S a different person. And that's probably not the same belief that everybody has but with Mike McCarthy being fired as the head coach of the Packers. And it was time to move on. He can't be stunned by this. You saw that change was coming there. When you only have four wins in your entering week fourteen. But you see a lot that has been said since and the reports of tension and McCarthy and Rogers trying to one up each other with the play calling and then you have the Packers linebacker coach. He got he gets fired because of a tweet that he has. And if you read into the tweet. Yes. Start to wonder. Well, did they hold Aaron Rodgers accountable? When you see what Winston moss did tweet out. So you start to wonder there. What's the interest going to be in the Packers job you have to soom? It would be high lambofield prestigious franchise, and you have our Rogers. But after what Bruce Arians did say it got me wondering. If your coach right now. And you're someone that that's up and coming or someone that's been there for a few years. Are you taking the Packers job? Or are you taking the Browns job and the easy answer would be? Yeah. You know what let me take the Packers. It'll be a quick easy turnaround. You get Rogers more chemistry more synergy with teammate. So you improve the defense. And then boom, you're good to go. And you got a chance with number twelve. However when you start to look at it, then you evaluate the Browns job, and I get the Browns the Browns, and they will always have that perception about them. But the Browns attractive really well. Myles Garrett Denzel award that Baker Mayfield. And there's not as much pressure right away to win shirt. Looks like that organization is moving in the right direction. But if you go to Green Bay your first year at Green Bay you're expected to get that team to the playoffs. Whoever's coach the next year. It's just about improvement and steady improvement. And if you don't make the playoffs the first year, you're not gonna kill for it. Now, if you regress, and you go three and thirteen that's not going to be tolerated. But you will have a little bit more patients. So if you are a coach, whether you're young whether you're old or whatever argue jumping for the Browns job or are you jumping for the Packers job because both are made available. And like, I said the Packer job is a. It probably viewed as more of a quick fix. But the Browns have Dorsey in place, they have a lot of young talent this team that's played very hard. This year. It's been a few games where they've been blown out. But there's a few games that they played very well, and they could have won. And they did it. So I ask you this at eight five five two one two four CBS. We have two things on the table. And it's with college and the NFL Ohio State. Urban Meyer's gone. Was it the right move to go to Ryan daddy, which I do believe it is. Or would you like them to conduct a national search and go somewhere else? And they go with Ryan and the number two with the Packers and the Browns. What job would you be more interested in right now? Would you wanna go to Green Bay? Would you want to go with the Browns, and you probably have more of an ability to actually coach if you go to the Browns because who really runs the show and greenback. It's Rogers look how much money they have committed to some fascinated to see. Who gets the Packers job? And then he gets the Brown job. Now. I have an idea on the Packers job. I'll throw name that's a controversial name when we come back, but I wanna get your take on urban Meyer. And then also the Packers versus the Browns. And if you were picking right now who do you pick eight five five two onto forty-two twenty-seven Zach yelp show right here. CBS sports radio. Sports radio ninety."
