Listen: Dak Prescott, NFL And Kyla Murray discussed on Reimer & Dakota
"Tomorrow the Heisman. I'm just kinda curious as to if anybody really gets fired up about the Heisman. I guess if it's the guy from your school. Then maybe you're like, yeah. Cuyler Murray is going to win the Heisman. Yeah. I just I've never really experienced that up close trying to thank you know, as a fan of the USC Trojans. I know obviously they've had Heisman Trophy winners. They haven't they seemingly had a candidate in quite a while. I know Carson Palmer won the award a decade ago or something. Probably way more than that at this point. But at that point in time, I wasn't I wasn't quite as big a fan. So I didn't I don't remember getting excited about it. I just don't hear people getting fired up about the Heisman, which is. Somewhat surprising to me. I mean, it's a big award. But I think it comes with a lot of pressure for that player. And it doesn't always mean the most valuable player, I think it means. The most exciting player who's put up the biggest the numbers, and you know, who is kind of garnered the most attention, and sometimes that does quake two most valuable and Kyla Murray is the favourite and more than likely going to win it because he had a big performance in the big twelve championship versus Tonga by Loa who was a little injured and didn't perform as well in the SEC championship more than likely. Kyla Murray is going to be your winner. And he's not even going to the NFL. He's going to go play baseball by all accounts. Now that doesn't mean he'll never play baseball. But at this point he's still supposedly going to go play for the Oakland A's. So let me get from that perspective. It's kind of interesting. We don't see that all that much. I think it was. Florida state guy Charlie ward, I think was his name. Twenty some years ago who won the Heisman and then went had an NBA career. So it's not a normal thing. You'd have to assume that if it doesn't work out for Tyler Murray in baseball. He's probably still got at least a shot at playing some NFL football. If people will still more than likely be interested at least when they're starter gets hurt the way the Washington Redskins have been dealing with all of these injuries and trying to find a quarterback to take over. I mean, they're onto their third quarterback already in Mark Sanchez. And now they're trying to find a backup for him. Josh johnson. I believe is the guy that they have selected to be their their backup. He's a guy who has had some time in the NFL ranks. But he last played in two thousand and eleven I believe from a small school is in San Diego called USD. So. You know, that type of situation could potentially workout down the road for Kyla Murray of his baseball career falls apart. And he doesn't end up making it to the bigs, and he's languishing around in double a or something like that. You got to think that he might if an NFL team comes knocking? Hey, I could go to the highest level and play a little bit. I'm going to take advantage of that. So we'll see how it all turns out for him. I just feel like the expectations ended up being really really high for the Heisman Trophy winner. When they get to the next level. Everyone expects so much from them. I mean look at Baker Mayfield. He's he's the most recent one I believe, yes. And then Lamar Jackson the year before that. So when they win these awards, and then go to the NFL the very next year the expectations are extremely high. And that's not always about thing. But sometimes I think we don't give that player an opportunity. To grow develop learn the system understand the league and then become a competent professional. I feel like we're expecting them to be good tomorrow and take a bad team because they always end up on a bad team just about Lamar Jackson kind of an interesting situation. But he didn't win the Heisman last year. He wanted to years ago came back played one more year at Louisville, and then became a pro. And because he was drafted late in the first round what to a fairly decent team in the Baltimore Ravens. But when you ended up on a garbage team as the Heisman Trophy winner. The expectations are really really high that you're gonna come in there because eight year the quote best player in college football, which is clearly not the case. But he's the most popular one and has put up the biggest numbers. Everyone expects you to come in and save the day turn everything around and make it all better. Like, hey, we're going to be a good team. Now, just because of you, which is going to be the exact same thing that you know, as as we look at college. Basketball here with Duke facing off against Yale tight game. So far. That's going to be the situation with Zion. Williamson he's going to be a guide that's going to be drafted more than likely number one overall, and they end up with the Cleveland Cavaliers more than likely unless there's are some trade action going on and everyone's can expect him to turn things around for the Cavs. And we know that that very rarely happens that way, I mean, even when a guy like LeBron showed up or Kobe Bryant, they weren't good right out of the gate as the best player in their game to show up on a team and say, hey, we're going to save the day. It just doesn't happen. All that much. I think it happens when we we kind of don't expect this guy to be good, you know. So that's that's the pressure. That comes with being the quote best player in your sport. Like Dak Prescott. I'm not saying Dak Prescott saved the day. But if feel like Dak Prescott has been much better than everyone expected him to be he's been a surprise to everybody even still as their critic. I don't know if Dak Prescott is the real deal. I dunno. If Dak Prescott is as good as he was last year. I think that Prescott is doing just fine. I've watched a fair amount of their games. And I can't I, you know, I can't criticize the guy all that much. I'm always apprised when NFL reporters former players pundits are seeing that breast. God's taking a step back. Dak prescott. Not that. Good. I totally disagree. I think Dak Prescott is the real deal. Now is he a superstar? No, not a superstar. But he's doing enough to get the job done. He's he's better than average. He's better than just he's okay. I think he's pretty damn good. I mean, you gave him one receiver and all of a sudden the team turns things around. Now a lot of that has to do with the defense. But the fact is that he has shown up and performed very well. And I'm honestly surprised going into tomorrow's game at home at AT and T against the. The eagles that there are three and a half point favorites like three and a half point favorites. That's just what the home field gives you so crazy. Well, anyway, interesting weekend for me. I am out of the whole studio. And I am on the road this weekend. Visiting family in the Texas area of Austin a place. I've never been to it's been rainy and cold so far. But it seems very cool. What we've seen and in the. Neighborhood that we're visiting which is really interesting. It's my stepdaughter and she lives in a mall. It's like what? Yes, she lives in a mall in an apartment above shop. So if you want drinks or food, you just walk downstairs, I'm like I could not live here with a bar literally right downstairs, and we just walked. Pass this what they call a cupcake ATM. And I'm like, what's a cupcake ATM? Well, twenty four hours if you wanna cupcake you can just walk up to this machine, and you swipe your card and out plops a cupcake. That's pretty cool if I liked cupcakes, which I don't. But we did a little wine tasting today. And I gotta say that Texas wind does not compare to California wine, although we did have some good wine, and as we were drinking at we learned that most of the grapes if not all of them were from California. So I don't want to criticize I'm not that big of a wine snob, but I am starting to become one. And I I feel very wind snobby as I say wines a little water down. Its I start using some of the terms, you know, like it's a bit bitter and the tannin's are a bit strong. And I'm like, oh, God, I can't stand myself right now. So it's been a fun weekend. And then tomorrow off to Chicago to attend bears Rams at Soldier Field. So that should be should be interesting as I say off to attend. I'm still kind of hesitant to use those words because I might just be watching it at a bar as we have had a week long issue with me getting a credential, and I won't bore you with all the details. But it's been a back and forth between the bears saying ask the Rams and the Rams saying ask the bears. So everyone's got their wires crossed. And when you talk to one they're like, look, this is not our decision. This is the Rams decision. And the Rams are like it's not our decision. It's the bears decision. It's in Chicago. So we've been going back and forth on that all week. And it's been an utter nightmare. So I might just be watching the bears Rams game from a bar in Chicago. We'll have to see how that all turns out. We'll take a break and come back and talk some hoops, there's lots of drama going on in L A with the Lakers, our friend. Greg Bergman is gonna join us from ESPN LA flagship of the Lakers radio network next. It's NBC sports radio and the NBC sports radio. Oh.."
