Kirkwood mountain ski resort is open after it had to shut down due to heavy snow in windy conditions in the Sierra yesterday. Forecasters say in the twenty four hour period ending at six this morning Kirkwood got eight inches of fresh powder. That's a seven day total of forty three inches of snowfall. Now. Bear valley golf the most snow with thirteen inches over the past twenty four hours and fifty one inches for the week. The Sierra snow index is now at one hundred percent. So folks who are planning to head to the Sierra over this MLK holiday weekend are being urged to carry change and closely monitor road conditions because another snowstorm is expected on Sunday and addition leaving thousands of workers without paychecks. The continuing government shutdown is quietly having an effect on firefighting efforts. Wildfires may not be making headlines this time of year, but the risk of danger during the summer months is increasing as wildfire prevention work has stopped while employees are furloughed each of the major landowning agencies in the basin do prescribed burns.
