Live from NPR news in Washington. I'm Janine herbs, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has died after a short illness in Switzerland. He was eighty years old. Lisa Shlein reports that Annan who was born in Ghana was the first black African secretary general of the UN and a Nobel peace prize winner. Tributes pouring in praising Kofi Annan as a tireless champion of peace and inadequate for human rights. After his retirement is UN secretary general. He moved to Switzerland where he created the Kofi Annan foundation to further the cause of peace and security. The many people who knew him described an-and as a compassionate warm, brilliant man who cared greatly about others.
