And welcome back George dory with you along with Mike McCoy E. his we talk about his work asteroids bridge to nowhere what can you tell us about the near earth objects tracking program through now so what are they doing on a regular basis for us well it it's primarily PPL it's tracking so they get their information from the minor planet center and they use two different programs one is called sentry and they they work to track the orbit of the near earth objects and you know the watch him all the time and then objects that they deem hazardous or be watched by another program called scout they're always watching they're always looking for all the objects that they found the problem is them found all of them thank David found most of his problem that's not what's the difference between a media right in an asteroid or asteroid is is an object it's out in space a meteorite is actually the the peace of the media or the actual rate that is coming in to meet your when it hits the ground in Iraq that you find on the ground it's a meteorite yeah those could be baseball sized double size just about anything yes or larger I mean I I I saw one this summer in the Czech Republic it was actually up in this kind of shrine in this church and it was almost two feet in diameter we've got an astronomer Mike that comes on weekly is names Dr sky and he has told us that the media right you the the size of a grain of sand can create that bold that glow in the sky yeah yeah so to me you know when we have a comet passed nearby you know he's comet or the the we have these these meteor storm heater vents it's just a grain of sand or small or rock but every night people realize that earth is constantly under attack every night there are thousands of meteoroids larger than agreements stand you know maybe you know small rocks well maybe a foot or two diameter decrease a fireball you know in just a few weeks ago over Los Angeles there was a fire wall in January people spotted one on the east coast they're actually thousands a day we just don't see them because they're coming during the day not this tonight and a lot of more over the ocean I'm gonna wake up one morning and find out that the city's been taken out by an asteroid that hip it's very likely I mean we in the event in in twenty thirteen over Chelyabinsk Russia was a complete surprise yeah a lot of people injured from that too it is about twelve hundred people injured it was it was exploded in the in the atmosphere and with the force of four hundred and seventy megatons so there was quite a terrible person that's what broke all the windows and injured people is there any procedure by NASA JPL to notify us and if so what's the procedure well I read article recently yeah they had five steps that NASA in theme it would work together to to have this process so that the first step is a text goes out to no more than twelve scientists I don't know why only twelve that's step one step two they would track the asteroids pass step three the determine the size and the time of impact and then step for that would confirm with Timo that that impact is inevitable and then step five masted steamer issue a joint public space the statement and they would address how they would protect earth do we do we have a missile in place right now that could be launched at any time to hit an asteroid we don't have one the does the planet have one we should what you know do you know that the planetary defense budget of the United States is a hundred and fifty million dollars what was sent to us is spending a lot more than that despite homes people she's well we should spend more on almost a terrible well we should but two million dollars a year to defend earth why don't we have Russia China in every nation that is gone into space have rockets ready to go in any moment to hit an asteroid if need be you would think we would but I think you know who the United Nations we should do something wish we sure but there we are going to have a the very first planetary defense mission it's called dark and that stands for double asteroid re direct test and it is the very first tested to actually into an ashtray to try to move it never see Los Angeles traffic during rush hour during an evacuation can you imagine what it would be like nobody would get out yeah I know we would get out if there was a yeah there was a disaster you know it's one question is on this five step plan from from nascent FEMA step five is making a public announcement or maybe they would just skip step five not tell us and if there's an asteroid storm as you have in your book it keeps coming over days at that it's not just a one moment of Adventism that's right that's right there are asked to reader coming from one direction space and as the earth turns you know you're getting hit each day and in the book it's it's each night there's an asteroid storm we talk a lot on the program Mike about preparedness about preparing with food and water and shelter can you really prepare against an ashtray strike I think if you know where it's going to land don't be there no good advice you know but we we there are a lot of concepts for planetary defense we just haven't gotten to them yet and you know it I think that it's it's either it was out of sight out of mind for governments are just be competent in my reading I I was I was discovery that you know in twenty thirteen the the Russian your exploded and there were twenty thirteen and then September twenty thirteen we should know that they re activated the space telescope and re re purposed for looking for Asterix and then this July twenty nineteen okay almost bumped into us September twenty nineteen after many years of planning and discussion our government finally fully funded a new space telescope called neo camp may launch as early as twenty twenty five so they were acting to two things were not planning ahead we're we're doing these major reactions deep impact was in asteroid movie yours very well could be turned into a movie your book but I think in that movie we had an underground facility made for a certain amount of people in that the masses found out about it Mike and they wanted in it then I think the president said no you can't go in and and I mean it was it was heart breaking in and it was sad but all of a sudden they decided we're gonna open it up to everybody let everybody and we're gonna save the planet and they did something like that for asteroid strikes for the elite than those you know types of folks well I would imagine on your show that property what does come up you know so we do the and in my story there's a a secret part of the you know part of the government news asteroid storm was coming they kept it secret and we build underground cities for their select few and they kept it they work very hard to keep holding secret and they work very hard when the asteroid storm was was happening to not let people in and keep them out they weren't as good hearted as the president in in the movie talked about I heard that it's the beam the laser at the asteroid that the heat from the laser could push the asteroid art of the way have you heard of them yes coli's a ripple ation and it actually is it is a it's been bandied about quite a bit there's been some studies and things like that you would you would have to have space craft he you know up near the asteroid in be powered by solar panels of the cigarette and shoot a laser at it and try to be price war to remove part of the mass of the asteroid and if you know if it's strong enough in the masses in too big of the of the object you might be able to insure you know a little bit through space but it would take a long long time to actually move it would might take years it might be we're gonna take calls next hour with Mike McCoy about asteroids in the threat of asteroids it is something that we don't think about on a daily basis but the threat is always there Mike is in a it is very much so how would we been lucky enough to Dodge this bullet well we've been lucky enough in our scheme of time but there's been hit many many times and you know to look at meter crater over in in the zone is a mile across the moon I mean the moon was pocketed in its formation so it's it's just a matter of time I mean NASA says it's a very low risk and were watching some all these things but you boy if if twenty eighteen okay would have hit somewhere it would have been a you know a regional disaster are we held down because of Jupiter doesn't Jupiter suck some of these on yes yeah yes it does Shoup's weaker levy nine you know if you got that one in in the family was amazing to watch yeah it's some effects there were larger than the size of the United States I used to know someone who worked at the near earth tracking center Eleanor Helene I don't know if she still there or not it's been years since I talked to her and did you ever come across that name no not no I haven't she probably she might retired I mean we're talking about fifteen twenty years ago but the what about technology what kind of technology to we have to some to try to detect these well you talked about the circulation so that's a technology but it's not there's no planned mission yeah for for that type of even even to test it so the very first planetary defense test that we have is this article the spacecraft called dark and he will want to twenty twenty one and it will impact the moonlit about five hundred feet in diameter and smashed right into it yeah yeah and try to move it but they're saying that he might as a test and the test watch it move it right toward us it just just the you know ladies ring things are strapping a rocket onto an asteroid is you know who's that's exactly right nobody steering that's the problem how do you steer an asteroid and is the problem what size asteroid could take out a city a conventional US type size city well Nasser it assimilation
