Listen: Donald Trump, Senate, Nancy Pelosi discussed on In the News with Mike Dakkak
"The news now in the news with your host Mike Dakkak so Nancy Pelosi has finally sent the impeachment articles to the Senate here. I guess. It has finally dawned on her that she doesn't control the Senate she was holding them up until it became clear to her. What the plainfield was going to look like in the impeachment trial in the the Senate whatever the heck that exactly means it's of course none of her business? What the playing field is going to look like in the impeachment trial in the Senate? That's entirely the prerogative of of the Senate whether Nancy Pelosi likes it or not if Mitch McConnell wants to declare trump innocent before he even brings the trial in the Senate and that's entirely up to him if you're so confident that's going to be an embarrassment for him and for the Republicans and ultimately for Donald Trump and why in the world would you try and prevent that from taking taking place if you're confident that trump and republicans writ large are going to pay a price for that at the ballot box. Then why don't you let them do that. Give them just enough rope to hang themselves. Why would you stop it? You would only stop that from happening if you know that. Not only are they not gonNA pay a price at the ballot box but they're actually going to be rewarded at the ballot box for their stand. The thing about our politics right now is not that either side tells lies outright lies although there's plenty of that too but the real problem where the real damage is being done is that they take something that is true some kernel of wrongdoing or incompetence and instead of addressing the problem or solving living in making sure that it doesn't happen again they blow it up to something that is completely out of proportion they make it out to be the end of the Republic many times indeed oftentimes Washington. DC would rather have the issue than the solution whatever that issue is trump. Did something wrong here. But this impeachment is a complete sham in both things can be true at the same time. Hi Yes. Trump was trying to squeeze the president of Ukraine but it doesn't rise to the level of impeachment this is what turns people off to both sides. Trump believes that somehow Ukraine was responsible for the origins of the Russian story the Russia collusion story with his campaign White House. It all goes back to the spring of twenty two thousand sixteen when Ukraine announced that it had found a ledger that purportedly laid out that trump's campaign manager at the time of fellow by the name of Paul Manafort. I'm sure you've heard that name before. Had received millions of dollars in cash payments for consulting work. He did in Ukraine on behalf of a pro Russian political party that caused Manafort to resign as campaign manager here at home and that's what set off the Russia's story in the press here at home that's what the president believes. Now there were. Some politicians is in Ukraine. who weren't too excited at the prospect of a trump presidency? I think one of them wrote an OP. Ed Criticizing Trump or challenging his views on Ukraine. Or something like that. This was during the two thousand sixteen election but Ukraine needs trump. They need whoever the. US President is because they need the US. I'm sure they have their preferences. Has All foreign countries do but there has to be a limit to how far they can let those preferences be known especially in Ukraine case because they can't risk alienating the White House or whoever gets in it if we turn our backs on Ukraine they're gobbled up by Russia and the story. The real issue here is what the press and the Democrats the fact that the president in an is constantly attacked by the press no matter what he does and the fact that the Democrats had impeachment as the main goal of the trump presidency since before his inauguration allegation it feels like sometimes so Pelosi says she's not going to send those articles of impeachment to the Senate couple of weeks ago. McConnell was more or less like Oh okay fine with us. Pelosi was trying to gain some leverage over the proceedings but McConnell said himself I think over the holiday break how can she gain leverage over us by withholding something we never really wanted in the first place the next question so that wasn't going anywhere and finally McConnell was just like all right. You know what that's enough of this. We're moving on the announced that he had the votes to lay out rules for the trial without any democratic votes. So that meant that the trial was set to move forward in a way the Republicans wanted regardless of what the Democrats wanted and wants Democrats. Figured out that there's nothing they can do about that. They've been being on that specific question. Recklessly within within a couple of days Pelosi announces she sending the articles of impeachment to the Senate I- people a lot of praise on Pelosi over the last couple of weeks stop because of impeachment but because of the way she's navigated minefields within our own caucus and away. She sparred with the president. She's seemingly gotten the better of him on more than one occasion. And I've criticize McConnell mercilessly. For the way he conducts himself. He's a right and a Lotta the end games. That he plays the judge project the way he holds his caucus together as well but he's just bad for business. Here though. Pelosi was outplayed outmaneuvered. She really didn't have the leverage public or private that she believed she had McConnell calder bluff basically as he always does he just kind of plays his hand and asks his opponent rhetorically through his actions. What are you going to do about it? In this case Pelosi did not have an answer for that question and it's because there is no public movement for impeachment. There's no public sentiment for impeachment. Yes there are people who say say they support it and when they participate in a survey I mean what. Are you supposed to say a nice sounding person calls you up on the phone and says do you believe there should be a fair trial in the Senate. What are are you going to say no? It's only a small percentage of people who would answer no to that question. Most people believe that there should be a fair trial in the Senate but no one is voting this issue come November remember. No one is calling their representative on Capitol Hill. Saying hey you so and so. You'd better vote this way on this or we're getting rid of you come the fall. You know what they are doing that with healthcare and war if Donald trump goes to war with Iran for example he loses reelection and he knows that because as basil this Aleve him of course new constant care about that. They've already decided that we have to go to war with Iran. They decided that years ago. So they're doing everything they can to take that decision out of trump's hands out of anyone's hands for that matter even out of the American people's hands all that matters is that they want it so they're going to do everything everything in their power to get it. You just wonder whether trump fully understands the powers that are aligned against him on this but Pelosi gambled on this impeachment thing and right now now it looks like it's backfired and that's not because Republicans didn't like the play. She was making and withholding the articles for weeks on end but as the days dragged on even Democrats. I started not to like him. Senator Feinstein Democrat from California said. Pelosi should send the articles over senator coons said it's time to get on with it. Mansion Tester all said. Hey let's as you know. Let's get going on this. You even heard some grumblings from the presidential candidates on the democratic side who are in the Senate I mean. They can't fundraise out on the campaign patriot and do their jobs in the Senate at the same time can they cory. Booker said impeachment would be a big blow to his campaign. He actually just announced that he's bowing out of the presidential. Is it angel race. That came as a shock to everyone. I'm short Elizabeth. Warren also said the impeachment trial would hamper her campaigning. It's funny because you're seeing the billionaires take on the democratic side come in spend tens of millions of dollars and make it onto the debate stages and get some traction in the polls. Tom Style announced his candidacy fairly late in the race. And he's somehow made it onto the debate stage. In this week's debate there are Democrats who have been running for the better part of a year. Who Haven't been on a debate stage in months wants little on this debate I mean star had no business being on that debate stage this week? He's on there because he spent more than one hundred million dollars on ads over the last several weeks and some early voting states. I mean if I were voter in those states I would vote against the billionaire specifically because they're building just because they're billionaires. Dave come in throwing a lot of money around and have gone somewhere because of it but of course Bloomberg is in the race and he's very very wealthy and he spent twice as much style more than two hundred million dollars and he still hasn't made it onto a debate stage so go figure but Bloomberg is also unknown commodity. Money will help. But it can't fully overcome spotty record with the voters and if you don't have a spotty record or any record fire can give you a real boost. I mentioned a couple of months ago that Bloomberg may just have gone into the race to spend as much money as he. You can to defeat trump. Well he basically admitted as much this week you send. I'm spending all my money to get rid of trump. It's easy to spend hundreds of millions of dollars when you're an actual candidate. There's no limit to what a candidate can spend on their own campaign right but there are limits to what you can spend on other people's campaigns so it looks like that's the route Bloomberg has has chosen to take here but as soon as this trial in the Senate is over the impeachment trial. It'll be time to get back to business the business of campaigning and the business of the people that that is if there is a trial and the chargers are in just dismissed outright. There were a few rumors that that might happen. Those rumors have since died down. But frankly wouldn't be the worst idea idea in the world because impeachment sucks up oxygen. There's there's an opportunity cost to these proceedings. And if you're asking yourself what this is all about. What exactly? Are we accomplishing pushing here. You're not alone and if you're having a problem coming up with an answer you're right. It's not that those in Washington knows something you don't it's quite the opposite. Actually you know more they do. oftentimes I mean. Are they going to get rid of trump with these proceedings. Unlikely are they gonNa Chase in hammer change him in any significant way. Is he suddenly going going to become another Abraham Lincoln. Thomas Jefferson in in in tone or soberness also rather unlikely any political damage to the president is actually being lessened by the day. The more drags on the more it goes badly for the Democrats not for trump is his base any less likely to vote for his approval rating in the Republican can party has gone up to. What is it now ninety percent? which is I mean? A little comical does are like Third World dictator approval numbers except that these are real. This is where the American American people are or at least a large swath of the American people on many of the issues that trump stands for these are the policies that many people in America one and the Democrats would be wise to pay attention to that instead of fighting. I mean all. That's being accomplished here is that we've made impeaching a president. Meaningless Democrats wore black on the day. They voted for impeachment. It's been very melodramatic. Well next time there won't be a need to be formal at all because it won't mean anything. Democrats want the American people to believe that they can do other things too. But where are those things. I don't see a wage is going up in any significant way. I don't see medicine getting more affordable. They said they can walk and Chew Gum at the same time but they're not walking chewing gum at the same time. They're just chewing gum. Yes sure they've passed."
