I want to welcome in a very special guest Brian Zara Michigan Supreme Court justice he and Chief Justice bridge McCormick are going to be in town on Monday for a public town hall to talk about our civil justice system in our legal system here in Michigan chief judge chose the justice good morning Sir how are you good morning Chris how about yourself I'm great I'm very good thank you so tell me about first tell me about the justice for all task forces was recently created right it was created in may of last year in response to calls from the council for chief justices and the conference of the national conference of court administrators observing that there are many people in our justice system on our civil side who go to court without representation and are in need of of assistance and there is a call by these organizations for every state to do what they can to research and come up with plans to provide access to justice to those in need in the civil arena like like representation like attorneys well it could be representation but it's not it's not limited to that you what we what we know is that there are many people who go in at the District Court reading the circuit court level whether people family court landlord tenant debt collection and they're they're served with papers or perhaps are even garnished and and and and monies taking other paycheck they don't know why and they come into court they want to be represented they want to defend themselves but they don't have access to lawyers sometimes it's because they simply can't afford a lawyer even though the cases of significance other times might be because the amount in controversy makes it difficult to hire a lawyer to handle the matter so what we're trying to do is is inventory we're we have needs find out what it is that we're offering currently and come up with innovative and creative ideas to provide people help as they work their way through the system so the the main focus is going to be in the gap it the the civil justice gap in our legal system what have you heard from people around the state about that gap what are they really looking for so it it's not a surprise frankly this is consistent what I with what I've observed since becoming a a judge many years ago and the trial court I would have Friday morning motion calls and without fail there'd be two three four people who come to court there is there is there a response the papers they've received and they don't know what to do so we know they're very there's need and we're trying to we're trying to learn more about that need and then come up with different ideas perhaps it's going to be better educating our staff at the courthouse perhaps is providing education to librarians or through the use of technology were were you know some states have implemented a a kiosk in the courthouse in the lobby where people can get help with him it's also possible we do it through things like mobile phone at and and we currently have what Michigan legal help this shouldn't be legal help dot org that helps people when they need assistance in this area interesting all will best of luck I hope you get lots of feedback you're gonna be at the international brotherhood for electrical workers the union hall over an avid street on Monday but today you're in grand rapids doing the same kind of thing right we we did that last week got a lot of useful information yeah and then next Monday February twenty fourth from six to eight PM at the I.
