Listen: Hugh Jackson, Paulie Baker Mayfield, Bengals discussed on The Dan Patrick Show
"And as I said, look Hugh Jackson got fired by the Browns. He went back to Cincinnati. Cincinnati was probably the only team that offered him a job he used to work there. But I think what is lost in all of this. And I understand Baker Mayfield may be a little chafed with the fact that Hugh Jackson would go. Okay. You know, what if you can't beat them then join him, and then he's going to join the Bengals. And now he's going to tell them how to somehow stop Baker Mayfield. And the Browns is there are reports that Hugh Jackson could replace Marvin Lewis with the Bengals. And if that gives him an opportunity to be a head coach again, whether he deserves it or not which he doesn't, but if the Bengals fire Marvin Lewis, Hugh Jackson could take over the head coach is Baker Mayfield gonna look at this differently that he's taken this job with. Opportunity of maybe being a head coach. Again, I understand, you know, Hugh Jackson did something that you don't want somebody to do. And it's not like he had to take another job to feed his family. But I think if he took this job knowing that he could get another job and maybe a head coaching job with the Bengals. Then I understand if I'm Baker Mayfield. And I want to create something here. I want to unify this locker room. I want to say, hey, it's us against them. Great go forward all four. I'm okay with that. But I don't think I can sit here and criticize Hugh Jackson completely for what he did do. I like it. No, not the way it looks. But he's looking out for himself now. And if it means he could get a head coaching job by replacing Marvin Lewis, I understand it or he's just able to coach again. Yes, fritzy, he was offered jobs from seven different teams or something. And he purposely picked the division rival. That's one thing. But I haven't seen any reports that all trying to grab him this one team that happens to be. In their division showed interested in whether there's a head coaching job from in the future. Not you go. He wasn't trying to stick it to the Browns by going to the Bengals. That's where the job was. Well, he could have been trying to stick it to them. So you don't take the job? Just because you're worried about hurting. No, no, no. I don't think he was worried about you know, he wanted to stick it back to the Browns that he got fired he's blindsided when he got fired. So I'm sure that he wanted to stick it to the Browns organization. But in the meantime, you stick to these players who were following you you were their leader. And now, you go to the Bengals I understand if you have a problem with that my point is Hugh Jackson wanted a job, and maybe it leads to a head coaching job. And then I think people would look at this differently efforts again, which we all know that he got fired didn't leave the team mislead like some college coaches do. Yeah. Come play with me. And you're going to the parents house leaving what if he said this I got fired. I was offered an opportunity to to go to the Bengals I couldn't do that to my former team. How would that play? I guess he'd be some kind of hero for the day to handle it that way. But ultimately, you know, he was looking he's looking for the next NFL job to stick it to the Browns organization. But in the meantime, the collateral damage is the players, you coached, my point is there was a report that he might be the successor if Marvin Lewis loses his job. And if that's the case, then I think we'll look at this differently. Yes, mclovin. I totally see you're pointing agree, but how can Jackson how could the Bengals be so bad in that game day? Let a team that had one on the road in years had four touchdown the game Jackson configure out. He should know that team. I can't hire him as a head coach. I would have fired him after the game for his one game performance. Interview. Yes, I that would have been the on the job interview. And I would have said Hume sorry. You knew all the answers to the test. And we couldn't stop them at home. And for that reason, I'm going to fire you. Mclovin. What do you think of Baker mayfield's as you said rallying the team good with that? He's like he's having a real aero- up season all for it. I think it's great. I think that they need that. They haven't had that they have not had any leadership in years, and he has taken upon himself that he's going to do it. And does it seem petty? It probably doesn't seem petty in that locker room. And if I'm Baker Mayfield, that's all I care about those guys in the locker room. I don't care about ESPN analyst calling me out because I left Texas Tech to go to Oklahoma. I want to make sure that my guys know that I have their back. Yeah. Paulie Baker Mayfield. Second in the league and quarterback rating over the past three games entirely. Just rookies. Yeah. He's played. Well since you Jackson, lift, absolutely. I also saw this. Remember when we had Bob Nightingale from USA today a couple of weeks ago, and he said, it's a done deal. Bryce Harper is going to the Phillies. Remember that? Well, it hasn't happened yet. But. This feels like that, you know, maybe you're trying to get more interested in Bryce Harper to drive up the price. But is he going to the Phillies Phillies are also looking at Manny Machado is? Well, they're not done it. It looks like the Phillies might do something wild here in free agency. And maybe you just don't lock in on Bryce Harper. But that was supposed to be a foregone conclusion. They're going to get both is what I but. Yeah. And one other guy in two years a local. That's the plan have Harper trout, and I've serious. That's how it's being reported. That would you would have tied up one point two billion dollars in three players. I missing it sounds like George Costanza plan at a time. I don't know how. But that's that's what they're trying to put out there the Phillies. Maybe if you could get Harper to pitch to. Yeah. Fritzy, maybe Machado can go to your reds, and he can be Charlie. No hustle. Thank you for. Okay. Serviceable Pete Rose throwback. Yes. He did you see just like the other day? He did. And everybody was like, I take full responsibility for that. Like. Donal his Johnny hustle comments. I take full responsibility for that. But that's good. Well, so take responsibility for. Said it, and then he cut the interview. I like the said, hey, that's your that's your spin. That's the spin. You put like Baker Mayfield kept saying, you know, that's your spin on it. No, no. It was your spin on our spin. You're the ones spinning. Yeah. John in Alabama Jonah sneaky in here. What do you have? Hey. One seventy five. Hey, I I tuned in at some point in the course of your interview with Commissioner Sankey. So I don't miss, but I listened to Birmingham sports talk radio. So he's obviously a fairly frequent guest on there being that he's in town and it should surprise. Nobody was a fan of college football that he is for the current setup because it benefits him and his conference. Currently they're kind of at the time. They got the form of they figured out. And it's working for them as a fan of somebody. That is a fan of a group of five team. You know, obviously, I loved your point about the possibility of having a UCF or somebody get in there that was so salient because that's what's missing from college football. And I just I want the chance, you know, the Domino's have to fold white way. I'm not argument power that group of football is on the same level as power five. But is having the chance to get in there. If you take care of business and things fall your way, that's all we're asking for and that's not going to happen. The way they see a PS. And even if you wanna have sixteen get in eight teams get in and the and thanks for the phone call, John and you want to have Alabama Clemson have a by. I don't care just give these other schools give it give somebody a chance to be involved in this. And if you had the BCS Notre Dame would not be playing in the play on. So while the BCS may have the two top teams, I could bring you the two top teams in all the other sports as well. But. That's. We don't like that format. We want the possibility of a surprise car shopping."
