Listen: Chosin Reservoir, Smedley Butler, Imerys Emaar discussed on Zero Blog Thirty
"He was like that was my tune sergeant that sense saying, and I almost shit my because there's two marines that I think are probably three Smedley Butler. John Bacelona chesty puller are like the three marines of marines. But I want. Yeah. Plate list them out Rushmore of marine. Yeah. Let's not ugly sweater right now. Let's get that's shirt made up last night lease. So I'll set the scene a little bit the Chosin reservoir, the average temperature during this battle was negative thirty five degrees. So this was during a time when they didn't have modern gloves. No, they didn't have modern Imerys Emaar is that we have now just flat out don't freeze, and you can put them in almost as cold temperatures. You want to and they're not gonna freeze you're able to eat them. That was not the case with the old emerets they came in cans. So when they were there for days at a time in thirty five degree weather. The emerets were starting to free solid. They didn't have fire's built. Because there was it was basically out in the middle of nowhere. There was no woods. It was just a wide open area. And they had to take their immigrants set them up on poles and shoot them in order for them to blow into pieces and then the marines in thirty five degree weather with no. Fire had to put those into their mouth to get any type of nutrients at all I just let it saw there. If you've seen a Korean war veteran a lot of the times, the people who were in the front lines of the Chosin reservoir missing fingers. And I think people just assume that it would be like now whenever somebody's fixing ID's other fixing bombs that they're blowing up what they had to do in the Chosin reservoir was they would go out. And if you were on watch, you would cut out a whole so your hand. So your your trigger finger could touch the trigger. They would stay so long that their fingers would get frostbite, and they would cut their own fingers off then they would move to the next finger. That's and the next thing and the next finger the average person who made it out of the chosen reservoir only had six fingers left while they were there for so long in that situation. So when you watch the medal of honor series, and you see the Korean war episode. There is a certain aspect. I think of the Korean war was so bad that that's why it was never talked about like whenever people came home. A lot of it was more fatigue from what happened in World War Two. But a lot of it was this was such a devastating war that it's it was uncomfortable to speak of because you can't imagine your family members having to be out there in thirty five degree below weather. Thousands upon thousands. I believe it was twenty thousand off the top of my head. I believe twenty thousand died in the chosen reservoir alone. And that was the fourth worst battle of the Korean war. So when you think about that, and you watch those shows the valor that the men and women displayed at that time in Korea was unbelievable. So to the sergeant major into the master guns who I believe he was actually Master Sergeant who died this week. All right. I think that he does type of things are heroism that we will never be able to understand again in modern warfare. Because it's not what we do. And I say all that. Well, yeah, we do we do tie Carter. Did it quite Roma? Shay. Did it Kyle carpenter? Did it? We are very lucky to live in a place where rough men and women with guns are ready to stand the watch. And I think way to the way we started this episode. The military is not perfect. And there are we're not these magical. Human beings are always honorable and always do the right thing. But they're also on the flip side of that goin- men like this who and women like this who are there. And who I think Trump that a million times who? Yeah, you're absolutely right. And I'm really looking forward to us to really delve into the the medal of honor series starting next week a believe or maybe actually the week after next week's going to be thanksgiving. So we'll probably only have one episode next week if I would have to make a guess right now. I don't know. We'll see. But southern trait.."
