Max October twelfth. I'm Jonathan Kaye part in this is America on the line. I'm rejoined by page. Lavender senior political editor of the Huffington Post in Washington DC from Milwaukee is Charlie Sykes longtime conservative talk show, host podcast for an author of how the right lost its mind. And here with me in New York. Brian Lehrer host of WNYC's the Brian Lehrer show, we'll be taking your calls in this segment in the at the top of the show. I wondered if there were independence we got. We got calls from from two of them. But we also got called got to on the air. But we also got calls from independence from Pennsylvania to from Missouri. One from Maryland one from Washington state, another one from from upstate New York. But specifically callers for folks who want to call in. Here's the question. Does a candidates stand on a question like whether NFL players take a knee during the national anthem affect your vote. Are you a culture warrior? Let me find let let let us hear about this. This call us at eight four four seven four five talk. That's eight four four seven four five eight to five five well since we just listened to the interview I did with Tallahassee mayor Andrew gillum democratic nominee for for governor just have a quick conversation around the table to talk about mayor Gillam in his race against congressman dissenters, Charlie. Let me bring you in here since congressman Republican congressman Rhonda Santa's a Florida announced today that he was resigning his seat from congress effective September first that the timing of this resignation from from congress. What do you make of it? Well, I think it's sort of a campaign gimmick he was on the way out anyway in congress isn't going to get much accomplish between now and the end of the year. But what makes this Florida race? So fascinating is the way that might be a real preview of twenty twenty as as the Republicans instead of going. With with going with a a mainstream establishment candidate goes with somebody who is an overtly. You know, Trump est who ran that commercial where he's reading his small child one of Donald Trump's books, you know, and plays blocks build that wall. So the the level of sycophancy is really quite striking. So you have a very Trumpian candidate in the Republican party in the Democrats have gone, you know, quite progressive. So this will be a test of of where the parties are going to go, and what that matchup might look like because I think a lot of the conventional wisdom is that the Democrats would be stronger if they with the more centrist candidate, but mayor Gillam is going to challenge that and if he wins in Florida, I think that's going to resonate national. You know, there's another matchup that is actually gonna hit on the ballot here in New York on Thursday in the New York primary on September thirteenth, and that is the battle between New York governor Andrew Cuomo. And his challenger, Cynthia Nixon. I'm sure a lot of you. If you know the name, Cynthia Nixon, she is an actress she was on sex in the city. She played Miranda. She was a lawyer, and Brian you as as the host of the Brian Lehrer show, you know, the ins and outs of of this campaign and apparently got very ugly this weekend. Right. So for those of you from Missouri, Tamale and Mahalo, Molly who don't know New York politics, by way of background, the New York state Democratic Party controlled by governor Andrew Cuomo sent out a Mailer claiming that Cuomo's opponent in the democratic primary Cynthia Nixon is silent on the rise of anti-semitism said she supports the boycott divestment sanctions movement against Israel, which it turns out. She does not and that she opposes fund public funding of Jewish religious schools called Yeshivas not a position she has taken. So this is Trumpian. This is with Bodey and to go back to the lying smears on John Kerry when he was running for president it's made up the New York Times editorial board which has endorsed Cuomo for reelection. Says this is dirty politics nearly Esley as it gets now as it happens, Cynthia Nixon even belongs to a synagogue, and I read that she is raising a Jewish child Cuomo has tweeted an apology calling the matter a mistake, and he denied knowing about it personally in advance. But a mistake is when you mean to write a C D instead falsely calling someone soft on anti-semitism isn't a mistake. It's strategy New York City mayor Bill de Blasio who is remaining neutral in this race calls the tweeted apology by Cuomo laughable, and if Cuomo really didn't know about the matter he is so far resisting calls to identify the exact party officials responsible and fire them Bryant. I have to ask you. How is there? Are we going to see sort of an Andrew gillum moment here in New York in that is governor Cuomo actually in danger of losing the primary? I mean, he and I asked the question because he is an incumbent. Well, he's got a very big lead in the polls, if you can believe the polls anymore, but if you think about history, it reminds me a little of what the National Democratic Party got caught doing in the emails that the Russians and WikiLeaks released forget about the Russia park for a minute and think about the content during the primary season between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, the Democratic Party nationally, put its thumb on the scales for Clinton rather than being the neutral overseer. It's a big reason Clinton didn't get the turnout. She needed to be Trump. So many Democrats were turned off to her an alienated will only see on Thursday. When the primary is the same thing happens to Cuomo. You know, let's I want to go into the conversation about Colin Kaepernick because I think this is a conversation that given the way the president has has talked about it we've gotten way far away from the actual reasons why Colin Kaepernick was pro will doing assign of civil disobedience civil disobedience at public protests at football games. A lot of people don't even know why he was protesting to begin with. I asked for callers at the beginning of this segment. Does the candidate stand on a question whether NFL players take a need during the national anthem affect your vote and ask you to call in to eight four four seven four or five eight to five five and Mark in Saint Louis is someone who is on the line to give us his view. Mark. Yes. Good evening. Yes. So where are you on the on the question does the candidate stand on a question whether the NFL players take a knee during the national anthem does that affect your vote? Absolutely. And I am a veteran. So obviously my and I have a daughter in the military right now serving. And so obviously that that colors my view on this point, notwithstanding social injustice, and the point that some have expressed as their purpose for this, quote, civil disobedience, they can do that in other venues in my opinion. We're we're too divided and the flag and standing for the national anthem is one place where all Americans can celebrate the freedoms that we do have. And yes, we have more more to go, but find another country on the planet that has.
