Listen: Machado Machado, Bryce Harper, Baltimore discussed on NBC Sports Radio
"Radio? So yeah. Bryce Harper turning down ten year three hundred million dollar deals. Manny Machado will do the same thing. But what's interesting is? We now have. Andrew Friedman, the president of baseball operations for the dodgers coming out and saying that they knew exactly what type of player they're getting when they pulled off that deal before the trade deadline with Baltimore to get the four-time all-star. They knew that they were getting a player didn't hustle. This. What Friedman said quote at the general manager's meetings? He got booed and Baltimore three weeks before we traded for him. It's not like he was a secret. I think it's never a fun thing to watch at least from my perspective in vantage point. But I do think it's it's important to dig further into that. I think there are times when guys do that. And they don't really care. I think there are other times where guys doing they really do care and by care. I mean, the effort they put into their work the type of team May Day are Manny checks all those boxes. What the heck is he talking about? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You're trying to justify a guy not hustling by saying. There's two types of players who don't hustle one who doesn't care and one who cares. No, there's only one type of player doesn't hustle a guy that doesn't care if he cared. He'd hustle. Here's a care about getting to first base. If he did he'd run hard, by the way, Machado's not the only guy most guys in major league baseball. And by the way, Bryce Harper included. They don't run how hard to first base. It's utterly insane. It's ridiculous. I I lose respect for players like that. Here's the problem for Manny Machado. Maybe more. So than for major league baseball. Manny Machado is gonna get paid a ton of money. He's gonna get thirty plus million dollars. Manny Machado is going to get anywhere from an eight to ten year deal from anywhere from three hundred to three hundred and fifty million dollars. I think Bryce Harper deserves more because I think ultimately, you know, Bryce Harper is a better player all around the manning Machado Machado plays a premium position. He's a shortstop doesn't play that. Well, but he's actually a very good third baseman isn't as long as he's not stubborn and is willing to truly be a third baseman, which is still up in the air. In fact, I'll tell you this, Sean, actually, I think Bryce Harper is a far superior offensive player the Machado. There's a far superior. Oh, yeah. The ceiling on Harper's higher than a ceiling on Machado offensively. Yeah. I. Yeah. But not only that. But even the right, but even what they've done to this point in their career. And they've had a kind of a similar track record. Manny machado. He's been more holidays nights. He is more consistent but his bar in terms of the heights of his bar are much lower than Bryce Harper's band. He had a great half season with Baltimore. But ironically, enough his half season or a little less with the dodgers is actually more of what Manny Machado is that what we saw in Baltimore hear me out. So the dodgers in sixty six games yet. Thirteen homers forty two RBI's hit two seventy three hundred and eight twenty five P PS with Baltimore ninety six games. But Chato hit three fifteen twenty four and sixty five with a nine sixty two. Oh, PS his eight twenty five opiates when the dodgers is slightly higher than his career average Opie s the nine sixty two is the number that is so far more than he's ever had in his career where the highest OPSEC's ever had had in a season was eight seventy six. My point being what he did with Baltimore for that first half of two thousand eighteen that's probably not the Manny Machado. You're gonna get. He's a thirty five Homer ninety five Rigby to eighty-five hitter. Maybe a nine hundred PS sky who's a very good third baseman average shortstop. How's that worth three thirty three million a year? He confuses me. It's not it's not at all. No. You're so correct. I don't wanna use the word overrated because I think we use it too often. Right. He's not in Harper's class offensively. But Harper though is he just he's inconsistent. It's maddening as you pointed out. But here's the problem though, Bryce Harper in a bad year. Okay. And I think we can sit back and say this year is a barrier for Bryce Harper. I agree. So Bryce Harper. The pressure of his contract because Machado was playing with the same pressure. And I don't care. I mean, that's part of the ball. Right. And if you want to go to New York, good luck in a bad year for Bryce Harper. He's oh PS. This year is eight hundred eighty nine. That would be a great year for Manny Machado. Think about that Bryce Harper and a bad here as an eight eighty nine zero PS three ninety three on base percentage. Manny Machado has never had an on base percentage remotely close to three ninety three. Unless you take these ninety six games in Baltimore this year at three eighty seven and he's never had an opium higher than eight eighty nine except the ninety six games with Baltimore this year. So a bad year for Bryce Harper is actually almost a career year for Manny Machado. I don't want to overuse the word overrated either, Sean, but you know, what I think to a point for Manny Machado to be discussed in the same breath is Bryce Harper this off season. Yeah. He's being overrated. A little bit. He doesn't walk. That's just the bottom line as much as Harper. And so that's why you have the big difference in the opium. But yeah. But I tell you this though, Machado third is gold glove defend short. I've heard people say that he's better than what he's given credit for that short, right. Derek jeeter ask out there. Right. No rain. Right. But he's not a rod when a-rod played short. Right. But having said Harper in right field. He's not a gold Glover. So it is a great arm. Does he does he have an Aaron judge arm? No. Here's a good arm. Not a great on. You. Don't look at his arm and say, wow, I mean, that's that's Vladi ask you don't say that. That's each euro ask don't say that when it comes to Bryce Harper. What's funny is this Bryce Harper's played nine hundred twenty seven career games. Machado nine hundred twenty six. Let's me about that. Honestly, that's unbelievable. It's older. Yeah. Three months older, they came up the same year. And they've played Machado was played one last game that Bryce Harper. That's incredible. And you know, what it Harper's numbers are far superior far superior except for home runs. I mean, you know, an Rb is, but in terms of on-base slugging, and oh, yes, it's really not that close, but Harper's going to get paid. You know, thirty five year in somebody's gonna pay Machado a bunch of money. I think the Phillies here's the thing. What if the Phillies get both? They can't. Yeah,."
