Automatic TRANSCRIPT

Here's your host bestselling author Carol. Welcome to let's talk dementia. I'm Carol how are your host. I'm glad you're with me today. I'm recording this on the Sunday before the Super Bowl and I wanted to talk with you maybe a a little bit about the Super Bowl. It will be very little bit because y'all I don't know anything about it. I can't even tell you who's playing but I do have a few thoughts about it. I can tell humanely what we're GONNA talk about. Today is the topic of the sermon. That our pastor preached on our Saturday night worship pastor. Pratt he talked about perseverance severence. He talked about how our world we needed to be people who persevered more we have a tendency just to give up pin given when what we need to do is fight the fight and keep going and he said in marriages people are just too quick to give up. I can tell you when I started this company Buzney. Ten years ago I tend to training and one of the director said that most of the people in that room with not have a business five years from the because they with not persevere the air and I was like Oh will not be one of those people but in relation to the Super Bowl. All those guys out there playing on the field they persevere. They have done it for years and the years and they've practiced in played in persevered continuously to be able to play in the Super Bowl. Perseverance has been a part of their world. Well if you're a caregiver you are persevering least. I hope you are and I can tell you to your loved. One with dementia is persevering everyday we day they are facing adversity after adversity and they are walking through it as best they can use spill like well. You need to think about rather that their world is full of the can't they can't do this. They can't do that they can't they can't it's not that they want or they don't want to they physically can't they can't dress themselves anymore. They can't bay themselves. They can't feed themselves. They can't drive their car. They can't do the things they wanted to Eventually they can't even communicate but yet they persevere each day fighting through what they have to deal with. And you as a caregiver you're doing signed thank thing you're persevering so I kind of thought on the way home. After pastor press sermon you know maybe persevering through caregiving is something something we need to think about. Well this journey that I had traveled for thirteen years with my Momma. That's for pitcher in the background there. She is still to this day. Hey My heart people say she was. Your mom knows she still is. My Mama always will be in aunt. She persevered the thirteen years of Alzheimer's. And and my husband. And I we persevere through thirteen years of very close caregiving for her well. I'm thankful for those years. But you know what we're not through persevering because Michael's brother my husband's brother. My brother-in-law moved with us to Florida and has been in a memory care now in an assisted living rather since July and don't fairly well oncle Ernie has ptsd post matic stress disorder from being in Vietnam where he now has schemic heart disease because of exposure to Agent Orange and dementia brought on by agent. Orange it is a have Alzheimer's Alzheimer's but he definitely has dementia because of Agent Orange. But he's been good in Montana in assisted living. I think back about his journey and I I think about last week last week was a trip. It's not one I want to repeat. I can tell you that but on Monday God was laying the groundwork for for Wednesday for my husband and I of course we did not know that but I know it. Now you see on Monday. I had the opportunity to speak with an in home care company and learn more about them as I prepared to speak at an event that they were sponsoring in impressed with what I knew about them and it was a good experience and I also had the opportunity to talk with the marketing director at a nearby memory care community because I had a client looking for me right here for her mom and I was very impressed with what I learned on new fairmount about the company and how communities were run in the pricing was just amazing raising. 'em Like this is going to be a good resource for us. Move forward a couple days in its Wednesday up. Just pay my told across the water and to go into another town to attend my memory choir that I sing in in my phone rang and it was my husband. Michael and I could tell immediately things. Were not good so as wrong. He said we got a problem. We've got a big problem I said do I need to turn around. He said Yeah. You need come home so whipped around started back towards home another forty five minutes and What had happened is his brother? Ernie who is in a wheelchair and barely moved around in that wheelchair. He is slow. Slow Com Tom Moving from his apartment the dining room for lunch. I mean he has to start really early but on Wednesday morning while it was still early like six fifteen six thirty thirty Ernie got in his wheelchair and Ernie took himself outside with nothing on but his depends now. The main doors to the community were locked walked in Ernie had found a door that we did not even know it was there. And he had gone out that door and was outside near the dumpsters in the back of the community date by herself in his in God's good graces in providence his Physical therapist pulled in and went my goodness. That's that's Ernie. Let me see what's going on in journey. What are you doing out here? And he said I have one eight million dollars and I have to go to the Credit Union. I'm so so excited that he won a million dollars but of course he had not and she worked very hard using diversion their tactics taken his mind from one subject to another while still acknowledging. What's on his mind? She used those techniques to get him back into the building but it was not easily done but finally she she did staff called. Michael told him what had happened. And said you're going to need twenty four seven Care for him To make sure he doesn't leave the building or you need to move into memory care but even so until you getting moved a memory care he is going to need twenty four seven care well. This community did not have memory care so this meant moving well. That's where Monday comes into this story so I began thinking what we do. Wait a minute I taught I know about this in home. Care companies bring their sponsoring must speaking of in on Thursday so I called them and straight away they got someone out to sit with Ernie and I went okay. Where are we going to move Ernie to oh wait a a minute? What about that community talked to on on Monday? That has the memory care and I called. I told him the story that he's a veteran in what we're looking for and hand they were able to help us. We Got Ernie moved On Thursday I went on Wednesday. I toured I pay the deposit on got the paperwork. Two accounts of it. That is no joke to pounds of and Michael and I worked through the paperwork and while Ernie had private sitter and we got it all done now. Ernie is in a beautiful beautiful memory. Care Community here in Florida where thankful for that. We're thankful that God opened those doors on Monday and I didn't even think about didn't realize I was going to need but here on Wednesday idea so I sit here so many days past that from Wednesday to Sunday and I look back back on it and I realized God had a plan for us and he was working at plan but we must continue to persevere. We have a job to do steel and taking care of uncle. Earning where thank thank before we visit him. Bob And six well six times a week In spend my husband especially spends time with his brother in time rubbing rubbing shoulders in touching him. That that physical touch that Aren't he doesn't get is important in. He gets that from us in a year's awards. Yes I love you now. Have you have a good day. Those are important in his world. Innocent Port in our world to persevering hope you're persevering in your caregiving journey. It's tough at Ya. I know this. I don't come to you doing these shows. Having not been through much of what you're going to know. Two journeys are the same. They're very similar. But that's why I do this show so I hope you get some encouragement here and that you will feel more inclined to persevere the football players. They're keeping their reward on that Super Bowl. They've persevered. Hopefully your team will win. Whoever that is I don't even know who's playing y'all I do want to take commended? Tell you why Ernie thought he had one eight million dollars. There's actually some logic to it which you know. If you get into people's store you can begin to see that An explanation for why. They say do what they do. You see there had been a scam going through his assisted. Living a lot of the residents. Were getting a phone call telling them. They had one eight million dollars in if they would only send X.. Number dollars to this address than the people would send in their check. Well of course the mark the executive -secutive director got wind of this and tried to put a stop to it. That's next to impossible but a lot of conversation was going on in the dining room about this and it was on Ernie's as mind that he had one eight million dollars now really wish she had but he didn't but interestingly enough the powerball lottery ticket was sold in the seven eleven about two miles from his assisted living. How crazy is that? It was like three hundred seventy three hundred ninety as a million dollars. Can you even imagine now. I cannot but there was a little bit of logic behind Ernie story because this was going on in his head and it was getting all confused for him. mm-hmm well understanding what's going on with our loved ones does help us be better.
