Listen: George Bailey, Capra, Albert Hackett discussed on For Your Reference
"Kt Not and get ready Fulsome nuzzling and kissing your mother on the mouth because today we covering quite a treat the nineteen forty six film. It's a wonderful life A classic classic indeed. I know a lot of the times we call things a classic even though has been out for a year but this is a bird defied Truly true sort of classic but the funny thing was it was initially a flop in the box office which was quite interesting. Speaking of let's get to the stats. We have the director Frank. CAPRA riders Francis Goodrich for the screenplay screenplay and also Albert Hackett was nominated for five Oscars. Frank actually one full directing for Golden Globe so there were accolades dates in regards to that In regards to the budget was estimated to be around three million and the worldwide gross was five million dollars. Louis so I guess that's why was constituted as a flop especially back in those days to make a film would have been very expensive actually made a loss because only got like five hundred grand and Franck was walking with liberty films only but he's studios or something like that studied this thing you got bought by paramount and and then they just didn't renew its losses and then that's that was a clerical error Broadcasting places will playing it you know without having to pay for it I can raid. I'm DB TRIVIA to it. All it's a lovely tit-for-tit around here. Welcome it is a Yuletide tide season with all of the Christmas tree. Thank you for spending this momentous time With us in the foyer reference household we are cognizant of the fact that it is twenty nineteen. And you know we do have friends and lovers of all different elks So if you don't celebrate Christmas that's more than fine. I don't really take any. I didn't really partake in any sort of religious observances but I fucking love Christmas. You do I am a bit the bitch the whole year when it when it comes to our white man in a red suit comes around you know. That's a story for another day. Certainly I was saying something very sweet and then not ruined but if you've listened to for reference that's kind of how anyway don't stop apple market now dude sweet away me no. It's done now perfectly fine. So let's let's talk about this film it is very interesting. It is the festive season We did toss up what we would be covering in regards to Christmas if if verbal Jesus willing were able to do another one before the end of the that would be great You know we'll tossing around you know what what movies as we should do Whether it was something like Jim Carrey's grinch Or in other crystal Christmas or whether it was something adding that loves love. Actually you you prepared at. You'll the one. No one forced you to watch it as many times as you've watched. Aw is pushing for a Christmas. Yeah but nine. The lookie gave me when I when when I brought it up as a cutesy jerk but kind of not And Yeah so so this is this is all in. Ot's courts sir. I'm very excited to get into office. Impressions Also Accolades Accolades a Jew and win millennials. We give ourselves accolades when they're not even do. This is the oldest film that we've covered on this podcast by a mile a mile So let's let's definitely talk about it because if you've listened to our master of none episode. There are a lot of tasty morsels that I didn't put in the shirts birds. I didn't really tweet about so definitely. Check out that episode if you wanted especially he more about is lives and personal frame of reference. But in that episode we discovered that he is the abacus study and he used abacus in school so the fact that he's now recommending nineteen forties movie further perpetuates the Jordan peele shining esque sort of character in came peo- so so so let's get into it. It's a wonderful life. It's a wonderful life verite I can assure all of you What was it like so how how did you even come across this film? Is this something that you you pretty much watched as Chris. Christmas sort of tradition Shen. Also did you watch it in black and white. I have a lot of questions. You just thought so Growing up we had one channel and it played this movie. We pretty much every day during the Christmas period and it was the black and white version of course And Kesari just John. For Africa's can you establish what decade this was ninety S. I just just so we're clear abacus what you're black and white. TV in the niners. Yes yeah and it really resonated with me like I. I was afraid of becoming George Bailey growing up ause like all like watching. I also like I don't want to be really don't want to feel like life was just Boston. Me By and this is even before he comes. And the angel comes and makes real spoiler spoiler. Oh spoilers may if you're listening to this and worrying about spoilers mate then shame people I was Jesus leases. I was scared because I felt like I didn't want to be George and I felt like my life. Trajectory would be Vallat. Stay like a cautionary tale. Yeah and every year it will be the same thing and I'll just watch it and really feel like. Oh my God you know. Is this GonNa be me wondering why everyone across my friends doing all the things they wanted to do. And we just being stuck here And I guess that's why just drove me to try and thinking outside the box in war. I wanted to be future and I wanted to do. I grew up. I just feel like what she gets. It ends on a happy ending and all about I was just stuck on the fast order. Three quarters the movie where Georgia's just running rock and roll around the time yet to go and help cocoa clean something just. What's the first has devastating part of the movie? And any help to do all this shit. You have all the responsibilities and you like will this ever end And driving away out. Jesus so I'm not trying to make the Super Dog. He's in my love and it's it's it's not all the doom and gloom but the awesome levity in this in Tom's of my frame of reference as well so spending thank you. It meant a loss to me growing up because I looked at him from a different prison and I watched dislike. I think I've watched this about more than fifty times so it's interesting though like it's interesting of the suggestions that you gave that you chose something that was so ooh classic I guess would to call like not necessarily her malone which would have been contemporary to the time. I'm just I'm just trying to understand how this specifically is the one that resonated because you have ceremony Christmas music all those airing in all one of the only the things always airing those Christmasy at all so I was watching and watch did as many times as I could and it just I just felt like I was George Bailey in the foster quarter. Get Al's I gotTA DO. It was a big part of my childhood. And and that's why. I wanted us to do it because every Christmas. This is the movie that I would watch during the whole family would sit around no just three. So no one's really take care. Ron would do their own things and I'll just be there watching this on the telly alone. Like it's just really like it. took me to places they took me to. It made me start thinking of things that I really didn't think that I'd be able to such an age and I had already son plotting in my life on what I wanted to do and what I wanted to travel and what I'd want to go and see just like George did and and whatever he didn't he didn't like I felt like I was seeing my life through him. Okay and that's what it meant to me at the time and that's why it play such a big part in my life and that's what I was tearing at the end of this movie watching it like the fifty fast time and it still has a soft spot on my heart like it's something that just it's why I'm really like this movie doesn't say. Ot all over it like it's not life yeah Ed what's an ot live interesting interesting I just like okay. So let's get into my first impressions I have never. I've heard of this film. Can you not even the title of this film. Not even memes. But this isn't a very memorable sort of film right so I didn't know anything about it. Aside from the fact that we decided to change our Christmas episode last minute and watch it and recalled straightaway and edit it and release it within a few hours because life is living and we love a little thrill. I just like 'cause I I was expecting like a light sort of films don't need to think too much. About how and it might be cheesy. It might be cringe but at the end of the day. It's Christmas right and it's not to say I didn't enjoy this film. It's just you know it's the same with watching like foreign films and you know you read subtitles because we stand in the foyer reference household. But you know do what you WanNa do in urine household you know to to what something with an added layer Whether it be some titles or whether it be black and white or whether it be something something from older many many generations no shade There is a there is an extra sort of barrier to oh enjoyment right so it's not to say that I didn't enjoy it Also at the same time in a world where people are fighting like black Friday fighting over whether die. Hod is a Christmas movie or not I would like to this film into the ether and say that this was not a Christmas view. I am so angry over got. I think I'll movie film license has been revoked like who. We should talk about the movie matter. This may the amount paid for the license. Means it's not legit because I think we might have mentioned that in our office like the American office episode. I'm not really big on Christmas movies. I fucking love Christmas but I never really got into Christmas movies movies right. So if I'm going to Christmas movie i WanNa feel all of the tinsel in all the places by a Christmas miracle every year about nobody lake. It wasn't it wasn't you know saturated throughout the film and it wasn't until halfway through where I accepted. Okay this is not going going to be all of the fanfare that I was looking for and once I accepted that I could just enjoy it as a story and as a story I enjoyed I thought it was quite nice. And then you have that that that dynamic of like a Guardian Angel taking him through his life and his decisions or in this particular case more so what life would be like if you weren't around. His order dynamic saved by the bell. Did that very well. Many Times. They borrowed from this heavily Sesame Street also borrowed heavily from this Bert.."
