Dr Mesler begins his teaching on the book of Deuteronomy Chapter Nineteen and twenty. Okay obviously we're in the Torres core. This is a quote from the Scripture in each of the scriptures in that have been around me and so it's not a question of using. Don't really deuteronomy. It's actually not about legalism as it would seem so superficial reading. It's actually excellent relationship. and Jesus is the fulfillment of each of these issues and relationships. Second Corinthians three that they spoke with confidence to face and of course both were mediators of a covenant Moses in the Old Testament Jeez in the new testament so it's interesting to see those parallels deuteronomy structures pretty straightforward first few verses the first few chapters about the failure that they had endured and the conclusion of the thirty eight years of wilderness wandering the mutual love the love of God for the people and the obligations in response. In fact. That's really what chapters twelve twenty seven deal with the obligations of God related people and there are even though we're not into law there's many things that will gleaned from that as being God in related people and then the alternatives that are before God related people in Chapters Twenty seven or thirty and then the final arrangements for continuity with Moses passing at the end of the book so that's a quick snapshot of the Book and of course we are in chapters in one thousand nine hundred tonight so nineteen. We're GONNA talk a little bit about the cities of refuge. We're talking about what a goal is and we'll talk about the principle of Lex Talionis which you know. As as I for night you know so forth so but it's interesting what's happening here. Is there anticipating settlement. They've been wandering for thirty eight years all the arrangements that they're used to as a traveling automatic group are starting to shift because they're going after Moses dies are going to be going into the lion under Joshua and so on but start settling and some changes. They're just going to start decentralizing. The Administration of Justice as nomadic tribes of Central Authority with Moses and the priest and so forth. They're going to have to distribute that. So it's going to change. 'cause some changes under Moses. The Altar had become an asylum for someone who killed another person accidentally. The priest themselves nine were In Judah Foreign Benjamin the others were scattered six but six of these forty eight cities where declared layered cities of refuge and the they were to have a spacer one thousand cubits call it five hundred eighty three yards if you will beyond the city walls for pasture sure and raising crops and such purposes in addition to the city somebody say the cities. It wasn't just the town they receive some area around that town and the sacred boundary was a square glare. We understand from some archaeological discoveries having the four angles at the four cardinal points if you can visualize that we call a diamond rombas but equal size but with with the corners of the cardinal points but anyway four sixty eight forty cities were cities of refuge and they were checking Bron Bas earth rim of Gilead and Mogollon talent. You could not touch you if you had made it to the city of refuge and we're accepted by them and as long as you remained in the city of refuge. You are safe. It's interesting to realize we have a nation here Israel that had no that didn't have a police force also had no prisons took care of that another way and so it's a different kind of cultural setting but we observe this with great fascination in fact if you read most commentators most commentators they will talk about. This tend to regard this whole procedure getting into as just a quaint custom. Uh of ancient Israel there's nomadic tribe converting to a settlement tribe has just curious cultural background. It may have applications that are far more profound once you recognize that the scripture is designed by God himself and every detail there is specifically by is engineering.
