U.S. Air Force Launches Contest to Replace the B-52 Bomber’s Engine
"Here to talk about bombers. There is news just breaking as of May nineteenth the US Air Force kicked off a three way competition to reengineer. Its entire seventy six aircraft. Be Fifty two fleet and the the competitions going to be underway. They just released a request for proposals. Steve can you talk about what the Air Force is looking for? And what that means for the companies involved. Yes so on Tuesday evening or Tuesday late afternoon the Air Force released the our fee to start Step two of the engine source election the replacement for the Beef at T.F. Thirty Three's which You know design. That goes back about sixty years. And you've got three companies in the competition. Rolls Royce with the VR seventy five. Which for this competition. They're calling the effluent thirty We also have the engine. That's on the global six thousand that The Air Force is flying as as the e eleven As a communications relay. Pratt Whitney is competing with the w eight hundred which is another business jet engine and you've got Ge that has said that they are looking at offering either or both of the CF. Thirty four engine actually started out with the. A ten In still in service with the ten. But it's gone onto power of regional jets and Also it's passport engine. Which is the propulsion system on the bombard? Da Global Seven thousand business jet. So those are the those are the three competitions with air forces looking for is a new propulsion system. That as what what they say is basically the T.F. Thirty-three has kind of come to the end of its life beyond twenty thirty. They don't really see. You're very viable way of sustaining it. And keeping it in service. But of course they've decided that the B fifty two will continue operating beyond twenty fifty so they need something under the wings of those aircraft. Keep them flying and they're looking for something that it can extend the range by twenty five percent that can add a bunch of loiter time to the B fifty two's mission set and They won't cost too much and that they can integrate as quickly as possible. So that's that's where we are with the competition Steve Guy. Can you tell us a little bit of it? Gives us a little more sense of the engines? That will be competing. Hard High State Yeah I it's fascinating to me that this is competition is underway. It's it's really difficult to believe that in the early two thousands that they looked at this in the nineteen seventies even looked. This goes back a long way. Pratt and Whitney originally proposed a you know of the upgrades the T.F. Thirty three which courses based on the original J. Three engine that Pratt went. They developed some back in the in the late. Fifties and early sixties. Rolls Royce of course came really close more recently With an offbeat till Evan Option in the mid. Nineteen nineties with with Boeing as a team So it's been an ongoing thing but that was was four engines to replace AIDS so this is different. Because you've got eight engines. Replace eight engine. So how could that possibly work? So the the reason it can work is that over the last fifty years which is really the length of the of this program The original engine. If it's hard to imagine this but the actual fan amit served Pratt and Whitney engine that the the one that's on the inevitable at thirty three is about fifty inches the inlet itself and yet the bypass ratio. Which is you know the key parameter ready for the performance of this Is Only one point. Four three two one but all of the engines that nabbing pushed through for this replacement here. We are fifty years later. They're all between four point. Two to five point five to one bypass ratio but basically in the same diamonds and that reflects the fact that all those cores of shrunk at in you've got much more efficient fan flow and that so here you are bringing in these twenty-first-century engines however just to clarify that One of those engines at state mentioned. Jeez pushing forward with the CF thirty four DASH sandwiches one option. That engine actually will be this year celebrating. I believe it's twenty eight anniversary so it's it's not a near engine itself. Likud's relative to what it's replacing it still a youngster. Really Oli others estate mentioned on new business jet engines up just a little bit of sort of back of the envelope. Calculation and based on the published data that we've got. It's quite interesting. You look at the actual weight that bear way to each of these engines and do a quick so a calculation it at the moment they the tip thirty three. The ship said of bear engines weighs about thirty five thousand pounds. That's just mean a mechanical gear on on the on the pylon not including the case sings or even sometimes accessories. If you look at the calculated waits for the others the passport which is the other g engine would actually weigh slightly more about thirty six thousand the prod engine the Peterloo eight hundred which state mentioned which is the The J. Six hundred five hundred engine is sly is actually the lowest just under twenty five thousand. Pansy got an interesting calculation going on that but basically they're all within about three inches of each other in terms of inlet diameter all within a few hundred pounds thrust so it's very complicated competition and a very interesting calculus that the Athol is GonNa have to go through.

"Anything yeah yeah so now you have to go back and maintain all these planes again yeah you basically have to entire ccheck on these yeah a lot of planes and then the other thing about aaron which was interesting this week they grounded eleven three twenty one nieto's with the failing pratt whitney engine so they basically granted them all together even in cases where there's only one engine on when questionable engine on the plane and so the european aviation board is little grumpy at india right now because the european guidance was can't fly over water if if it's only one engine it's okay and presumably they they're upset because this is a big blow to airbus more than anything else so there it's protectionism a little bit and so mean does the prenton when whitney engine issue mean anything for us as we fly buses united has them wait i'll find any news now hawaii news right all right so i've noticed the lion has pulled they had the molly flight out of portland that they just restarted on neo that flight has gone seven six three on sundays sundays new flies it but i don't know not all their neo so it's it's a particular batch of prior to whitney engines it is a bad seal and they're working on a solution but until the solution is in place there they re top sites okay so whenever they have is available in rotation nursing it to where they can so with hawaiian all they can use in dryland while that's fun and i'm sure airbus's kind of going man we screwed up on this one or are they think they're gonna go after pratt whitney.

"A suchet tells i really feel hobbs he's a little bitter about pratt whitney wigan adored from a bitter at all i mean it's the reality of it the practical i mean united premature united that the long history pratt whitney and they always they had a lot of problems they could get the same kind of range that you could get out of the competitors engines they weren't nearly as reliable let chosen i mean guest delta's a great job with seven five the half but i'm sure they have a lot of problems with those engines as well the you think that's me is part of the reason they went with these overall right but contracts while i think that the overall contract basically get from 100 paints for free it's coast of rape it's it won't be quite there that it fifty ish million per plane the total revenue over the engine overhauls covers andrei on or something like that of the math the other day and it to raise thought to like there's no cost to do in the maintenance work is not free free free but it's going to significantly help smooth the curves so it's a big reduction yet denies and i set up for delta upset similar to how they are did with the refinery it's a closed yet or are they still in the midst of closing it i think it's still open the checked in and while they're talking about closing it down a couple of months ago i mean that but that unmik put that on next week's episode next week's episode um cv all stevens looking that line up on new business class on euro wins excited their slavery 30s by a dusseldorf are going gonna carry the uh such as the lufthansa.

"You can compare the image of that aircraft to this christmas trees it wasn't like you know where these guys drinking then they roughed just kind of flying around it was that it was carefully calculated which kind of makes you wonder why it wasn't a little bit more chris the image look i couldn't do anything close to that i see these guys a hard time but if airbus has really trying to show off the precision of their aircraft so i don't think this is exactly what they should have yeah the the plot out exactly right it's interesting though because i mean they they must have flew some some circles because there's led to four six there's like eight or nine uh you know like a g ornaments that are hanging on the drawer of it and that's one of the reasons we got to give them some credit ears so it is you know it's a lot of fun and look in aviation sometimes the topics can be rather sad or even tragic yet though when we can talk about fun stuff like this yep it gets nice i i agree on a percent j ratliff our guest so uh big get a order airbus beat up boeing it to the tune of almost thirteen billion bucks uh you know for years delta has been a very loyal does too customer as far as uh our high some very loyal a boeing customer and i think boeing released kinda took that for granted because the airbus luke 10 in one this order four hundred aircraft which you mentioned comes out to nearly thirteen billion dollars and it's not only a loss for uh the boeing but also for g aviation as well because these new aircraft engines are going to be powered by pratt whitney and uh hill certainly something that uh you know the folks of boeing they've been smarting of leap because airbus has really been making some inroads on the didn't didn't mid range narrowbodied aircraft and what i mean by narrowbodied is there's just one i'll up and down the ioc we mentioned body it's an aircraft that has two and really airbus has been coming in and uh kind of taking a lot of the market share away from boeing who i think in this case grew little bit.

"To dealing with boeing and airbus their main customers because now they're going to be able to make everything from the laboratories the seats because rockwellcollins our earlier this year closed on their acquisition of b aerospace they make the life flat seats and so on so they're not going to be able to not only offer the avionics you know the touch screens that are in the cockpit's but everything else plus the engines from pratt whitney division of utx sense right so the challenges of it if you look at it for a regulatory standpoint is you know the government may very well benefit from what's going on with the suppliers you know that back and forth i mean to the extent that it affects the prices of military jets they're not going to have ally lie flat seats of course but nonetheless i mean it's still something to think about that near the military side of the business may very well benefit as well as the commercial side so that it will be an interesting piece of the puzzle as we see this deal go forward yeah well you know one of the things at pratt whitney is dealing with is the introduction of those new geared turbofan engines and they're supposed to be a lot more efficient than previous engines they've run into a series of challenges with them and of course they are battling against the likes of g four a lot of that then rollsroyce of the business let me just mention i got this from our guest producer today rich took when he says the current owner leslie alexander guess how much is that used in rock yeah go ahead lie that big how much city pay per bought a pay for the club prior to the 93 94 season pocket change pocket eighty five million so from eighty five billion to two point two billion but more than flesh yes little bit top don't you think absolutely just to mention engines just to go back and forth the i don't know whether you get a chance but you know there's a wonderful program called jay leno garage.
