"dr sills" Discussed on The MMQB Podcast with Peter King

"Welcome peter king podcast and there is so much happening. There is a ridiculous amount of stuff. Happening that i don't really quite where to start but i'll start by telling you i would guess To talk about the news of the week we're going to have from the nfl network. Adidi king kabbalah who covers coincidentally the steelers and the browns most often and she will be all over. The story of kevin stefanski the coach of the browns and joel tonio the left guard of the browns being out of this huge football game on sunday night on nbc on peacock on telemundo And they're unfortunately gonna miss that game because they have tested positive for cohen. That's the news of tuesday. The very big news. So we'll talk to adidi first off and then we're going to talk to dr allen. Sills the nfl's chief medical officer. A lot of kovic related questions to dr sills is very landing. Conversation is recording this tuesday Sills late tuesday afternoon and I did a deities conversation just very recently in the eight o'clock hour so anyway before we get to their conversations just two quick points i wanted to make and i won't be labor either one but the first one is about the philadelphia eagles and what doug peterson did on sunday night and look it is his team. He can do what he wants with his name. He can coach the team the way he wants. However having said that. I believe the doug peterson crossed a kind of an ethical coaching wine. When there are two teams whose playoff futures rest on the result of a football game that you're involved in and it's early in the fourth quarter of that game and it's a three point game and it can go either with and you decide because of loyalty to a number three quarterback mates upfield who you wanted to get some playing time to before the end of the year you decide to put him into a three point game. He is horribly either unprepared or not suited for this moment. But in his first eleven plays he throws one interception he loses a fumble and he gets sacked twice. He was not ready for prime time and no pun intended but he was not and washington wins the game. It's not guaranteed that philadelphia would have won the game if jalen hurts state in. He wasn't playing great. But i just thought it was a terrible coaching decision and At some point. I think more than it has even more recently. I think doug peterson is going to have problems with some players on his own team for in the middle of a very close game against the division rival For i don't wanna say throwing the game away but nate sud failed. Had no business being in that game and look. I applaud the giants for mostly taking the high road. But i also applaud joe. Judge for saying that it's not something ever that the new york giants would do and him for saying that So that's how. I feel about that one and you know a lot of people in the last few hours have been saying well. What's the nfl gonna do about this. A head coach missing a playoff game. Kitty push this back. A few days pushed the. Nfl is not gonna do that people nor after the way. The nfl handled this season. Should they make new rules for the season in unfortunately however it happened. Kevin stefanski a job. Tonio have tested positive. And the ironic thing which i discussed with a Can't go wall a in our conversation. If somehow they win the game against pittsburgh on sunday night. There's going to be a very very short week if those two absolutely key guys for the cleveland. Browns are able to play in the next game. Which is most likely to be against the kansas city chiefs. So it's a. It's a tough week for the cleveland. Browns a really tough week at imagine. You're tonio you know you have gone through one in fifteen and sixteen seasons longest tenured brown. You finally get to the playoffs and you get the rug pulled out for monday. You know many things in this. Nfl season have been unfair in many things or bombers. What's happened in cleveland. Browns is both so. Let's get to our interview with the nfl networks at kanka very proud of pronouncing your name correctly And we'll actually get into a little bit of Jocular back and forth about that. But here's my conversation with a dvd about all things browns-steelers back in the podcast. So happy to be joined by adidi qingdao boola of nfl network. Adidi is in the unique position of all reporters. In the united states. she covers the browns. The steelers notably a lives in pittsburgh right at eighty. Yeah but you've had a lot of experience covering the browns so this playoff game sunday. Night cleveland at pittsburgh in the last of six. Nfl wild card games Is absolutely totally right up your alley. I've got to know what went through your mind when you heard the news today. That kevin stefanski the coach. Brown's joel ba- tonio the pro bowl guard. A both tested positive in will not play in this game. I mean just tremendous disappointment. Because quite frankly peter at the end of the day where human beings right we do our job because we love telling stories and it's funny because i've just been having this conversation at length with the steelers left tackle album ueva abou- why i got into this. What i love about this. Is it really about the schematics in the xs and os or is it about talking about people and characters in so. Let's start with job Tonio jovi tonio is the longest tenured browns player. After the browns. Beat the steelers. on sunday. kevin stefanski walks into the locker. Room takes the game ball and enhance it to joel Tonio and it's because tonio has lived through more people more. Coaching changes more losses. More craziness than anybody else and kevin stefanski looks at all and he says you're going to the playoffs and for that there had to have been moments in joel's life in his professional life. Never thought this day would come. I mean myles. Garrett said that to me after sunday's game that after owen sixteen he just really didn't think this is happening. So here's this moment. This unbelievably classy guy. This young man who through awful things with still so patients so wonderful to the media always had something to offer. His coach recognizes him. His teammates recognize him in everything that he has been through. Four this moment and now it's taken away from him. It just feels like the worst possible moment for to happen. And i know joel is not engaging in ridiculously high risky behavior sunday. Here's how are you celebrating. And he said well. I'm gonna go home to my wife and my baby and i'll be at home with them. And it just speaks to the vagaries of the nature of this virus. Really and then as for kevin stefanski. I mean peter. I think he's the coach of the year to be able to do what he has done to be. A first year head coach with an entirely new staff with a new offensive scheme. A new defensive scheme not getting in front of his players until august having to some sort somehow build some sense of calm robbery and buck. I mean what two decades of a losing culture and to stay so steady. The do you know how many times. I have asked to speak to his wife to know if he is this even killed at home. I mean this man never blinks. He's just no matter what happens. He is steady and his team has taken on that persona and so you just feel bad for them that this is what they have worked for in all of a sudden it sucked out from under them in likely through no fault of their own disappointing. That's you know. Allen sills the nfl's chief. Medical officers is on the podcast this week in when we recorded earlier you and i should say a recording on tuesday night and recorded allen sills earlier and what was interesting is they have through you. Know the science of genomic sequencing a team at yale university in new haven connecticut. It looks at every positive test to see What it's connected to is it. Original is it. You know have there been. Is this the same strain of the virus that five other browns have had or whatever and they've started they really kind of perfected that this year not perfected it but they've really gone a long way and understanding it..

"Incubation period that's the one thing that keeps getting lost in this someone could have been exposed to the virus. Based on was to Fond Gilmore on Monday night and Kansas City in that crap locker room that they have there on the flight home where they had the two planes, the guys who did have close contact with Cam Newton and those who didn't and Gilmore was on the plane with the guys who did, and then you've got an incubator period that could hit tomorrow Sunday Monday with another positive. So every day that the news comes back clean that isn't time to exhale. Exhale for now until tomorrow when we get the next round of tests. Is Their contingency plan on pausing the season. Where maybe a two week or three week window and maybe bubble ising these teams in hotels I don't know how drastic how strict the NFL can or would get. I. I think those two options don't have to happen together have to pause the season if you're going to have home market bubbles which I've been saying for well over a week now they need to do I mean what's happened is the NFL basically has had the bullet, graze its ear and they've decided to keep going full speed ahead. They got lucky with the titans although I don't know that I would call a lucky if they don't play their game this week and they will have missed two games because the makeup of. Bills Titans is going to be a lot harder to pull off steelers it tightens. But at some point, they gotta hit that button and say we are putting everyone in a hotel. The NFL's attitude is basically we're going to have people who test positive. If you follow our protocols, it won't spread which I don't really buy and I'm told that when they had a conference call on Monday Dr Sills chief? Medical Officer was Pushing the idea that the NFL's approach is actually better than what a home market bubble would be or regional bubble would be and people just aren't buying that. It's not better. You can't just accept oral. We're going to send one hundred and seventy people home from every team. Every night coach's players, essential personnel they each have their own stories to what they do where they go who they interact with and we just say well. We're going to be positive from time to time. We'll just deal with it. It's better to put everybody in a hotel lockdown get everyone sign on for it. If they GONNA opt out, give them another chance to opt out. That's what they should do and I feel like they're eventually going to do it. They're just going to wait a little longer until there's an incident worse than what we've seen in. Tennessee and there's been this talk in my source said that you know he when he listens to show US people keep saying well, just move that season back a couple of. Weeks and he just says, remind people that not everybody has missed games. So Tennessee, if they miss two games, let's say then I do I have an extra two weeks before I start the playoffs just to accommodate the Tennessee titans at what point does the NFL say to a team you're going to forfeit a game. Well, you've you've raised two very good points there..

"We're leading the pack year. What we have to say is there are protocols have have been very effective in most cases obviously now, we've had an outbreak on one team and we've got a second team of concern but but the point is we have to look at. Each case individually and look and see what we're able to accomplish and I think all these protocols are only as good as the compliance i. mean we can have it sort of like a game plan rich. You can have the best game plan in the world if we don't go out and execute it well, we know it does it turn out well in Kinda stay in that football analogy mode, you can have ten guys on a play doing their job if one person's not the play falls apart. So so all that to say that we we're we're ver vulnerable when we will we're not at one. Hundred percent on our protocols we said that ninety percent ninety five percent is a failing grade year we just that leads too much opening for this virus be get in. So what you just said leads me to my final two questions with you. Then first things first is obviously you'd be the one that helps set the protocols up for a bubble if it is there a plan like an a top right hand drawer somewhere because it would require a ton of moving parts and union league so much more air bubble plan somewhere and somebody's top right hand to pull out if necessary, you find it necessary. Well we've discussed bubble scenarios all the way back into the summer. When we in the Union together look at that I think I would just tell you a couple of things about a bubble. There's no absolute bubble. You've always got people coming in and out not players and coaches but you know service workers support workers and things like that and introduce the virus and being in a bubble does not change the basic need for all the other parts of. The call if you're in a bubble, these still must do masks. He's still must do distance. You still must do hand hygiene. You still have to change all of these things. So it doesn't change anything on our day-to-day operations. The other thing I think you have to consider their riches, not just the infectious disease, but what the mental health and the emotional behavioral health toll inside a bubble when you're asking people to leave their families in isolate themselves for. Months at a time that's a substantial challenge for Michelle and behavioral health and I think that's something that doesn't always get discussed but I think it's an important part of the calculation. So you're always looking at what can you gain and versus what is what is the downside? So I would just say we have all this discussions we continue to evaluate but our focused right now is is on the protocols which largely have been working and trying to. Make sure. We're following them as carefully as we can, and then the last thing that you mentioned that you know an a team, you could take all eleven right to to matriculate a ball down the field or all eleven to stop a team from doing that I'm you know if one person doesn't do the job? Then that's a problem You know not to call anybody out but in the two minutes that we have left here, obviously the Tennessee Titans. something's up there We saw a handful of writers while they were trying to do some good for a charity went out We've seen some coaches get slapped down considerably because they're not masked up. What do you say to anybody in the NFL community that still needs a message on this front doctor Allen Sills. Well, we've said that it takes all of us and and I think, maybe coach Tom and I heard him quoted yesterday who said when one person fails we all fail we we're all in this together, but we also say this is hard. I, mean, this is really hard. This is a relentless opponent and said before this virus only needs a small opening and I think everyone has the best of intention everyone wants to stay safe everyone wants to keep their their fellow. Team members and everyone in the environment safe But it just takes day after day sustained effort and and as a doctor I know you know plenty of times that I give advice to patients Intel. Here's the right thing to do. Here's what you need to do. It's just hard to follow that all the time. We all recognize that. So I think we have to give some grace to people to say. This is really hard. It's difficult to do it all the time but really the only chance we have to say is saddest aim for that one hundred percent compliance to keep ourselves safe and to keep our team environment safe and we're GONNA. Continue to focus on tools that will help us do that I know that the players coaches and staff are very committed and we're in this together. This isn't about us. Being on opposite sides, we have one comment opponent here, and that's the virus and that's united the entire NFL at this time. All right. Thank you for the call Dr Sills greatly appreciate it and keep doing what you're doing in. I'd love to have you back on as conditions warrant. Thank you. Thank you happy to do that rich have a great day. You Bet that's Dr Alan. Sills. The chief. Medical. Officer. Of the National Football League. I'm an epidemiologist on TV I. Guess I'm trying to figure out again. So it's entirely possible. that. Gilmore wasn't shutting virus on Monday night football. Right. Possible. We don't know. I mean look like we're you know what I mean like to the naked eye to us who don't know much seems unlikely..

"Going to have big problems I think it's difficult I think they can do it to keep things going to be passing in lots of it Dr sills who's the medical adviser to the commissioner has been quite emphatic about that ideally they would like to be able to test every day that means that we need attached it's accurate that they can get a get back immediately they think they might have something like that and that would be that would be outstanding if they can't do it every day maybe three times a week so the only way I can see the NFL even if MPs to get together for training camp let alone this season is frequent testing I mean let's just take a but how they play football right there's no such thing as physical distancing in football right that's why we like it so they're gonna they're gonna have a challenge to be able to get things together I mean what was it last week the cleansing university team they have twenty three players testing positive twenty three so if this shows how infectious things can be so these these these hygienic measures to prevent viral transmissibility is so very very important but even with them with the with the proper measures this is really difficult when people are together in small areas closely packed it's a very infectious virus docked in in general terms I mean I'm sure you've you've seen a ton of things and you probably are mentally emotionally or much more calm and prepared for this then then we are because we don't have the knowledge how scared are you of this pandemic and how nervous are you that it will maintain its level of devastation for a long period of time well this virus thank going away soon unfortunately I I wish I could tell you what was it smacked it's a respiratory virus budgetary viruses tend to come back everything you've been hearing about the likelihood that the possibility but the likelihood of the virus coming back in a big way in the fall and winter probably true it be wonderful if the virus decided to change its behavior and not do that but I think that's unlikely so what do we know about the the virus now it's the you were getting towards the end of June I can say a lot more about it today then I could go back in March if you're young and you're healthy you're going to do fine if you get the virus so we we know nationally eighty percent of the people who have been infected with the virus have been under the age of sixty five eighty percent eighty percent of the people who have died from the virus our older then sixty five so twenty percent of the people who are infected over the age of sixty five make up eighty percent of the case the talents that we've been dealing with Caroline already fully fifty five percent of the people who died so far from the virus have been residents of nursing homes and other group living facilities so these are really important things for us to know by no means this means that we can allow ourselves not to take the proper practices to prevent being infected but in terms of being of being frightened been frozen in place please don't be like that we know we can go about our lives taking the proper safety measures and we can live very well I mean I myself and my colleagues here at the hospital for the last three weeks now over three months we've been taking care of the sickest of the sick with colds and we've done very well using our proper safety are proper safety measures so you can go through life do the right things like this Hey Beek the proper safety precautions we're talking to the chief medical officer at northwestern medicine Lake Forest hospital Dr Jeffrey Kopin so that being said we do with everything I know you're a big sports fan if I gave you a ticket to a bears game let's say they are playing football let's say there's a box Thursday night Tom Brady's in town yeah like they're filling let's say they're filling the stadium twenty five percent would you feel comfortable going to Soldier Field hi my salt no I wouldn't go I wouldn't go but if one of you guys will not use but you know if someone else were to say you know I'm I'm young I'm healthy I want to go and you gonna follow all the rules and it's not just twenty five percent full there's gonna be a trying to enter the stadium which which gate the common lots of rules that are going to need to be followed if somebody who was young and healthy so they want to do it as long as you understand that there's a potential risk of being where there's a lot of people yeah go ahead I wouldn't I wouldn't say no the key point here guys and I hope all the listeners can listen everybody he's got to do his or her own risk assessment you for each one of us that's going to be different it's going to depend on one's age once held and just the overall what kind of what kind of risk benefit do we judge to any activity that we might want to participate and certainly going to a bears game on a Thursday night to see Brady that's a risk benefit in each one of us is going to come to our own decisions what we're going to do dot dot hell as far as.

I saw like the Lakisha have wrote a beautiful message of what a great. Dad. Chris has been Chris Wesleyan or early on. And I was thinking. What would it take? Like what my wife put that message for me? I would think it was a joke. Now Type And, that's one reason why I love my wife I. You know it's all everyone. She is able to express their relationship and West as well if you remember his iconic values. Top of the armory down there in Taibbi island, and we certainly Miss West. We want him back here as soon as possible. all right guys, let's get in. The News. All right we'll start. And we did a show of course late Thursday night, and we talked about What Dr Tony Fao she had to say, his thoughts on the NFL's ability to have a season and this happened during a week last week where there are a lot of outbreaks across the country, but also had hit a lot of teams, both on the pro side in across sports, Clemson Football and give you a little update where where we are since then now so the. The NFL? PA has recommended against its members. Working out together is the number of covid nineteen cases increases in many states. As you've seen all across social media, players have been GA- gathering not even some players that are teammates, but just you know you'll see a bunch of high profile players from different teams, all gathering, and just get in the work trying to do what they would've done under normal circumstances this time of year in minicamps. Just get some work, but. the now the advice from the PA. The Union is to. Cease all of that also, the NFL sent out a memo that creates tears of access and its facilities to manage. The coronavirus and you breaks down as a tier one tier, two tier, three employees, and it's all designed to again limit exposure limit the chances, certain personnel or the need of personnel to get to places where they don't need to be. That could cause. It's all trying to control. What's happening right now? In this world that we live in Marxist Tesla. Well I mean I. I know you guys discussed on last week's emergency pod. Which I apologize for you know not. At all not as emergency and. Well. No, it was nine did. Not Ringing into the emergency category. You're you're busy. Weird few! Fathers that's right, but I thought last week was in one of the reasons for that show among other large news items. was really the first week that I thought the sport of football was. Remarkably impact by. See Nineteen I mean that college football specifically I think put. We were texting with each other and put put a lot of alarm. element of alarmed me of what what the going forward just you know pound ahead to September. Tenth Eyes on the prize. Is a little bit. Disconnected with what's happening around us, and so the NFL responded I. Think Appropriately in terms of these practices. These workouts with these players get together. Cut Him off for now because we simply can't. Predict what the outcome will be. The outcome seem pretty grisly, even just after a little bit of that the one thing I think it's a little lost in this and I'll leave it for you guys is that? It's fine to point out that your average twenty-three-year-old player could have corona NBA. Symptomatic never know he had it and life goes on as normal that's. A statistically true for a lot of younger people that are vibrant, but I mean packed into any NFL team are. Probably fifteen to twenty people in their fifties and sixties, and some case seventies, so are you going to do? Are you going to just March? Coaches out there of that age I mean there's just a lot more to consider. That isn't even being discussed and the one thing I'd say about the League is. They seem to be eyeing a number of external factors. Sports Leagues to see how things continue. With by saying very little about what is actually being discussed behind the scenes at this point I would like to be the fly on the wall segment. I would like to know what they're actually saying about real life, and how it is impacting something that used to be four months away now it is merely weeks away. If you want to continue this season the way they've talked about full start week on horse blinders on role ahead. Blinders on though I don't think words. I think they're doing a lot of work that they need to do here and now they're trying to what we're seeing now. Is there action steps with and now whether it works or not, because we know for John, harbaugh's example says the plan that they plan to put into place is going to be impossible. Does this tier system? Is that GONNA work? Mike Florio PF. T reported the League. Minimum remains quote highly optimistic. The twenty twenty season will go for to schedule, but there's less optimism. Existing now that fans will ever be president. Any of the Games are played patch. Real quick to me, that's the that's been the line for three months. That's when I talk about like just saying the same thing over and over actions or saying, we're stripping practices away stripping minicamps away restricting everything else away. And we'd heard from David tepper believe it was two months ago in time. Just kind of doesn't really exist during the whole. Thing but he had said that he saw an opportunity worth teams that had outdoor stadiums to have some fans in attendance and I. Wonder You know as the days and weeks of gone on if he changed that Abbott, it's kind of like the fluctuations of NFL policy or built in like. We heard after we heard from Dr Fauci last week. Dr Sills. came out and said that the NFL's policies are going to reflect. Reflect the current advice.

OBS phone he was kind of agreeing with if you before that he's kind of talking about what a Harbaugh said last week because it's kind of silly to have a social distancing policy during like the office of line meeting the office alive and happy fifteen feet away from each other during the oil meeting and then an hour later they go into a practice where they're beating the hell out of each other because one doesn't match the other and that I think is a summary what is I think it and that's what I was trying to take from this is is he saying something in a positive way or in a negative way should we be playing football and eight as it is right now I don't know how you play football I just don't you know baseball right let me move on to something else NBA the NBA is trying to figure this out but they're in a bubble and you don't have as many players and while there is physicality there I don't have to worry about as many people you look at a pro football team just the number of people you gonna come in contact with I don't know how you're able to practice social distancing safe distancing and still play the game of football just don't maybe something happens here but I'm gonna be surprised if the NFL starts on time and I'm sure I'm in the minority on this but I don't know how the NFL starts on time and as a result you're gonna have some college football games that are going to be cancelled get top does any higher ups in the NFL if coach McVay was meaning like like you know what if we play football let's not pretend that we can be able to protect these guys something could happen in this yeah okay how long your book is a protocol if you get a talking to from Roger Goodell or any higher ups in the NFL let's not make these kind of public comments whether your tongue in cheek or noise gonna follow the rules I don't know somebody reaches out to him and says Hey can we keep it in house here I mean that's what I would say find the commissioner I would say to Sean McVay John voice the.

Well, first off on behalf of. VM will I would like to say that it's been a pleasure working with you. Given you any last we're well, I was as the old guy representing the then I would like to defend the the younger generation Michelle you, and I were talking to the break a lot of times you'll see online that the old rotary foam, which by the way, I'm trying to find it flea markets in they are expensive. I'm not going to pay fifty dollars for an old phone, anyway, it's always fun because the parents I o the kid doesn't know how to use the phone. Dial the phone they can't figure out how to use a phone. Well, first of all folks, why should they because those things have been obsolete for a number of years? And also, I'll say this. While you're chuckling at your kids because they can't figure out the rotary phone. They are laughing at you. Because you can't figure out how to send a text message. I love that. That would be a great indie. I gotta say my daughter still asking me, I don't know how to face adult, and I like to talk to people well looking at them like we used to do. But these kids nowadays feel that every time they talked to someone who has they have to look at them. So I'm at work, and she this school, and she's FaceTime. You mean, I'm canceling in Kathleen. So when I do FaceTime, you are so lame. The phone is too close to your face. Why do that adults knew that? I'm like, well, give me a FaceTime one on one class because I how close is the foam supposed to be to my face..

"And I think it's important for fans to see this struggle. Players are competitive wanna play. They're not always interested in cooperating even if you had Adam theline separately saying, oh yes, I believe in player safety, it cetera. The moment where he's the one who feels he's being taken out at a critical time. He may not be happy, and it's up to the officials in the medical personnel to be able to enforce that. So good for them that they did. He goes and as part of the protocols, you said he goes to the tent for evaluation. They ultimately determined that he's been cleared to play to return to the game. And we know from what Dr sills told us that are still monitoring him, but he returns the field. And so that is a visual of how that protocol is technically supposed to work, which is great. I mean, everything you, it's obvious. Understand why players don't wanna come out of the. Game. Imagine if it's not an atom feeling whose role as locked up in that Vikings offense. But it's someone that I, I need this plane time. I'm trying to prove myself. I'm trying to, you know, and this is where, like you said, you teams and players should not be penalized because of the fact that something may happen. It's so great that the medical staff can call down be able to say, we need. We need to check this player out. We need to take this seriously, make sure that they're ok as a part of everything. So I thought that was really cool listening to having listen to this and then see happening in real time during that there's a game was read. Dr. Stills would say, this is not the end all beyond necessarily, and it will continue to be valuated as it over the course of every game with everyone's input. And it does remain a fluid document in a fluid process. And I say congratulations to them for aknowledging that upfront. But certainly, I, I hope that it helped our audience to hear how complex this game day protocol is, and that there are a lot of moving parts into disorder. Get a peak. Behind the curtain at what they all are with that. That concludes this initial episode of answering the bell for fall of twenty teen. There will be more to come. "What I'm thinking is week long concussion protocol this players in the concussion protocol and it is something where he is dealing with a concussion, but there are two different concussion protocols that I learned. I had no idea about, and there's game day concussion protocol and weekday concussion protocol, and it's it's sort of the sleigh. Rang of our language and how we phrase it. That's probably been misleading. I think the game day protocol is it's very structured. And as you heard from his description of it, these are the things that can trigger evaluation. This is what happens when a player comes off the field, it cetera. And that protocol is documented in the literature. And that's why it's so important. And that's they can measure how it's followed against every step that they have documented. And I think that's good. I mean, that's good for review. It's good for making sure that every step is enforced and also the fact that they review it and that the protocol this game day protocol is a fluid document. If anything comes up where they feel that they need to add something like this year where they added the third UNC who's up in the booth with the athletic trainer spotters so that they have the ability to review the broadcast radio. They added that as a result of something that happened. So I like the fact that it's a fluid document. The one you're referring to that I think most familiar with when you hear a player has a concussion, right? They've been identified with a concussion and we say, now they go into the protocol protocol, makes it sound like it's super structured and it really isn't. It's a, it's a process of rehab in recovery, and there are definitely phases, and we've heard that guests that we've had on before talked about some of the different phases from the time a player gets hurt until they're able to return, but they every team has different steps. They go through with the goal of getting the player to return. And so those have a little more variability between them. They're certainly not time to find they're more function defined. So as a players recovering and get through particular phase, then they can move onto the next phase. But there's no, this happens Monday. This happens Tuesday at cetera. Yeah. So we use the word protocol, but they're two very different things. And it was interesting because in the game that just recently passed when the Vikings played the Rams we saw Adam Phelan actually go into the blue medical tent for a concussion protocol. He passed a concussion. Protocol, obviously, everything that Dr sills talked about with like that blue medical, ten and everything, and it's like it's just being able to hear what it is that is on this podcast and then, oh, I'm watching a football game and look at this is what we talked about here on podcast. Fantastic. You bring that up because if you saw Adam feelings response, he was not happy. Understand that look at the refs were there was a medical timeout. So this was a great example I wasn't there. So I can't tell you who called it, but it would appear to me ref was away from the player when he called it that someone called down from booth. And remember all of the folks on the sideline have the ability to communicate up to the spotters. So whether the spotter saw something and relate it to the referee or someone on the sideline called up to the spotter and then they relate it either way. It was relaid the official called for a medical time out. So no team is charged with a timeout. There's no runoff, it's not a penalty, and that's why it's very important. Nobody's penalized for this, but it's a way of. They saw something that they didn't weren't comfortable with and the player. As a result. It was mandatory for him to exit and have that evaluation. He didn't like it. He thought he was fine..

"The game day concussion protocol are available to address any concerns with players who have any type of injury and in terms of improving player safety. This has been a target for the NFL to really establish a consistent concussion game day protocol, not only in terms of what the processes, but in terms of the people, the personnel who are in place and the sequencing of events. So I sat down. Down with Dr sills at the time that we did the television feature. But as you know, those things are edited to fit for TV. So I wanted to bring him in again to the podcast so that we could have a longer conversation for those who would be interested to hear everything in the scope of what we talked about. And now I'd like to welcome in this very special guests for this episode of answering the bell that is Dr Allen sills. He's the chief medical officer of the NFL. He's also a neurosurgeon in his spare time and has a faculty position at Vanderbilt where he continues his practice. So without further ado, welcome Dr, sills. Thank you for joining me. Thanks so much for having me. So I'm start out by just perhaps explaining to the audience what the role of chief medical officer is. This is a relatively new position in the NFL. You're the first to hold that title. Why was the position created. While the NFL established his position back in two thousand seventeen to have a physician who worked in the league offices.
