Parler ban pushes random app 'Parlor' to top of app store charts

"All right well. I don't know if you guys saw this. But there is a new app that has been skyrocketing to the top of the charts and the google play store and apple. You guys know what i'm talking about. It's called parlour. Now you may be talking about parlor a. r. l. He are the app that has been scrubbed from humanity for the internet for breeding ground for organizing hate groups. I'm actually not referring to that parlor. I'm referring to the parlor that's spelled p. a. r. l. o. r. which people mistakenly thought they were down other parlor. The oh this great tight. It's existed for over a decade and has just gotten rid floating out there until their name made the news and people started downloading. It mistakenly thank you. They don't mike god. It looked like a swing at a really kind of convoluted idea. Like this is their their their tagline. The first and only social network. It's clear mud. What it does guy says the first and only social network so evidently about ten years ago a developer had an idea for what was essentially like a kind of a chat roulette type of situation where he would listen. I do not want to disparage whoever invented. Par lower This one that because they're having a lot of success right now guys are blowing up one day and we're like what is all what is it didn't take off when they launched a decade ago. It's terrible i guess. Who wants randomly get on a phone call with somebody like that's what it does. You can go into these different topics in rooms. Like say it's clubhouse. Yeah yeah like here for example. Let's say. I wanted to go into the vip fan clubs room. I will randomly be on the phone with like another billie eilish fan. Hypothetically there aren't a lot of active users. You're probably a couple reporters downloaded dry out. The few people that got on the phone with somebody. They got hung up on almost immediately. So it's a it's a very odd apu was a big swing. Just didn't work out but the developer never removed it from the stores right now. Theoretically there's a lot of very angry right wing radicals making random phone calls and a hud dated web. One point zero like it's it's totally janke. It looks like an old like wanna be my space from a decade ago. That barely functions. So congratulations parlor shirt day. He has finally arrived. maybe people are using it. Maybe it'd be like hey man. I was actually accidentally downloaded parlour. Good condo in the vip clan or the celebrity users vertical which there is one where you can evidently talked to celebrity users. Those unclear what celebrities are using it. Hypothetically if you were celebrity downloaded the app go right there because plug you up with the fans. So

"What i try to do with instrumentalists like have something that feels organic and human and then put it on. Its edge and play it in a way. That might be a little atypical. So you know just a piano for the first twenty seconds of the song. How can i make that unique. And so that was when the the side chain compression idea came to me side. Chaining in this songs case. It's a compression plug in put on the piano and then configured to react not to the piano itself but to the information of another track in this case a kick drum and in this case a muted kick drum and so you get this sort of undulating like tied going in and out feeling on the piano. Without even having to hear the kick drum and then it comes in halfway through the verse. Piano is so beautiful it just drew me in like right away. Ninety five percent of the time. Billy is there the entire time. I'm working on production because she is so informative to it and she'll save me a ton of time you know if she's not there. I could really quickly go off the deep end into an area that she wouldn't like and so billy's kind of always there to guide it. There's this kind of like tonal snare to the song which is actually just a a synth layer but at only plays on the twos and fours it sounds like snares like snow white and the seven dwarves like like an ice pick hitting a you know gold mine or something right at has that like king sound which i thought was super interesting. That combined with the side chain compression of the piano. Those are the two things that got us excited and then we were writing to that. This was all in the bedroom that i had in my parents house in holland. Park the best thing that i had in my childhood bedroom is my grandad's beat up upright everett piano. I mean that piano sitting there just as an acoustic instrument in the room is such a huge help in terms of writing songs. Because you play the loop but the loop on your computer can drive you crazy and so just sitting there and playing the piano and going is slow as you want and picking up a chord change if you want it to to be. There is so vital..

"The rest of his life so that's all we have to say about the bachelorette for Let's move on to Billie eilish so a couple of weeks ago. The paparazzi take a photo of eighteen year old billie eilish wearing more form fitting clothes than she typically does and it was just a tank top and shorts and of course the internet wild critiquing her body defending the image calling her brave inten months. Billie eilish has developed a mid thirties wind mom body. Someone tweeted and a lot of people just picked this image apart. Criticizing her body like they've just been waiting for this. Yeah in response. People definitely stepped in to defend her a majority of them being a young women calling her brave which is a whole other conversation. I know we're gonna talk about a minute. Basically for having a by. That isn't a size zero as the norm of women in hollywood but just whole thing has been. She wanted to focused on her voice and not her body. She wants said quote. If i wear what is comfortable. I'm not a woman by shed. The layers i'm slot though you've never seen my body you still judge in judge me for it. Why they definitely a big question because she's a teenager. Yeah and you weren't. Why so grossest sexualize girl as well as the fact that she can wear whatever she wants a b. and she was previously wearing very very loose fitting clothes and everyone was giving her about that. Says like damned if you do damned if you don't yep it's that line i'm telling you and yeah that whole thing about her body being brave. It's just it's not brave. it's normal being comfortable. What the hell. I know it is true that because of this buried critique this very thing we saw there can be some level bravery involved in showing off your body publicly Especially if you go in with that message but mostly it's just inevitable when beauty standards for women are so impossible to attain that your body might not probably doesn't fit those beauty standards for the most part. This isn't a brave choice we make. It's just jeans it's rigid. It's a rigid punishing expectation. On how women should look that we exist with and choosing not to hate your body when it doesn't fit that should it be brave. I get what people were trying to do right. But yeah i mean it's just well it's also irritating to call it brave because what we have to have some kind of extra strength to just be..

"You guys ready snack always ready to snag tie? I've been delaying my actual snack until after we record this so that I don't have like popcorn particles. Snack mountain is when I'm stack. Remember that banned from the. Nineties, snack math. Nineties two thousands. Classic. So snack time you know this, this is when we jumped through some of our favorite posts that we've seen on reddit recently, and they just feel a little more snack size than our usual meal-sized episodes. This is a a rare three for Josh here I, and let's thread producer Josh Yeah snacks. Welcome. Thank you, I feel like in that spirit, Josh should kick it off. What do you think love it I think you guys are GonNa really like the snack. I'm just going to say that up top. Okay. Well. cocky. All right. You set yourself up for failure I'M GONNA start with a question for you guys. When you were growing up ever believe in Santa Claus or the Easter bunny or anything like that no. I did in fact believe in Santa Claus Josh and I believed for a really long time because my parents had an unfair advantage on me, they got their neighbor to come over when I was three years old and dress up as Santa Claus in the middle of the night and they all woke me up. And my brother woke me up and like brought me into the living room to spy on Santa Claus while he's putting toys out and I basically believed in Santa Claus for as long as possible because of that I'd seen him with my own eyes. That's perfect because this story will really resonate with you I think Nice Nice. Right. I'm going to save the headline for the end and I'm just going to start in the post. Since our daughter was five and my wife and I I started reading her the Harry Potter books. We have told her that she is a witch and at the wizard world is real. She is almost eight. An answer questions have gotten deeper. We've kept building the illusion with more details about our family genealogy, its connection to book characters, Stories about times we used magic and the life and moral lessons we learned about it. She s processed many difficult subjects like racism climate change, and even the corona virus through this Lens. Before other parents, judge or lecture. We know it's gas lighting, and that eventually she'll have to be disappointed and have trust issues with us when she learns the truth. We justify it by saying that we are adding magic to her childhood and giving her motivation to reach her full magical potential. We've serious questions of teachers and they think it's more awesome uncreative than damaging at the very worst case. My take is that it's analogous to children being raised to believe that traditional religious stories are true and that when the truth hits, it will teach her to ask critical questions and not accept everything she hears or reads at face value. The to the post raised our seven year old to believe she is a witch and the wizard world is real need ideas to help keep the magic alive thoughts. I'm going to say that these people are just like putting themselves into a world of hurt. It's like you like I I like the spirit of what they're doing but I just think do you say like it's not a big deal that I am basil that money because I stopped Do you know what I mean. I'm trying to think back to what my own parents did growing up with just in terms of things that you you know are not real, but you want to keep the magic alive for the kids a little bit and I think my parents always kind of. They. Didn't outright say that there is no Santa Claus? There is no Easter Bunny but they definitely, there's definitely like a wink and a nod when talking about Yeah. The Easter Bunny came wink wink and then and then they knew were all the eggs were had been hidden. So I, think ambiguity is probably the approach that I would take not having any children of my and not being qualified to to really speak to what the right answer is. Here I don't mean to expose you both to the world's don't you think part of your skepticism is coming from the fact that you both hate Harry Potter. Hate is a strong word I am indifferent. Like Wizards, the truth arrives exactly what it means to and all of my true Lord of the Rings stands will know just what I'm talking about. NERD. I Yeah I just I. Don't know man. They're entering a world of hurt. We'll have a snack that has to do with a world of hurt. Great Transition. All Right Okay. So my snacks starts with a quick personal anecdote, which is that my freshman year of college. One of my roommates at the time was going through a break up. And one of the ways she coped with this break-up was to listen to a specific song on repeat pretty loudly. And it was that Tim Lynn One republic song that's like it's too late. Still. You know what I'm talking that reminds me of that snack mouth song never, mind. That was good. So in a similar vein, my snack comes from the unscented letters community, which is a new favorite of mine, and we learned about it from the yellow rose who featured in our black lives matter episode because she's one of the moderators of this community. And it is what it sounds like people post letters that they don't intend to send to their recipient, but that are important for them to put down in writing for one reason or another. So. a regular who goes by a flu souffle. Want. Great? Made a post titled. Dear neighbor who listens to Billy Irish on repeat every evening and the post says. I don't know what a person has to be going through to listen to billy eyelashes when the party's over seven to fifteen times every day at six. PM. But you seem to be going through it. Thanks to you I know every lyric I sing along with you sometimes. But you'll never know we're connected man I worry about you. And they go onto right if you want, you can get you to premium free for one month, and then maybe we can listen to bad guy or if you're if you're more into sad songs, I've got break up playlist that we can listen to heck bro and they get this vaccine done all even give you a hug I'll do anything anything for you. If you could just play any other Song Yours truly your now sad neighbor. So. First of all I had never heard this billy Irish song before. Have you guys heard this when the party's over I? Don't think so no I I've only heard bad guy. But that's because I listened to it sixteen times a day. No time for any other dollars. But I just listen to it for the first time. Right before this and Yup. That'll do the job. If you've just broken up it's haunting and it's lovely although I don't recommend the music video if you're squeamish about things like I am so I'll just put that disclaimer in here. And I wanted to mention this post because. A lot of the posts on unspent letters are letters that really might be better left on sent. You know like a letter to an old ex that you really probably should get back in touch with..

Good that was good so ellen you know I don't know that people know this but ellen fi I wouldn't say maybe fines but Ellen sees a lot a lot of things Yup and text them to us to get them on the show like it's impressive. How and when we started? That's not how she was. She was almost anti news. Yes she did not want to see news. Because it was generally heartbreaking correct but now she's just gotten like she does more homework in our seventeenth year. Sure I think she watches more. She tries to watch every single thing that anyone is coming on her show to promote and she sees a fair amount of news and she watches a lot of television like she really seems more invested in. What's out there now than she used to be? Yeah and so. She sees the story on the news. We're she's watching it. I don't know but she sees a story about this kid who's going to high school in Texas and they are not allowing him to attend school until he cuts his dreads. It has dreadlocks and basically they changed the dress code so that his hair would be in violation of the dress codes soaker and it seems a little bit like the reason they changed to dress. Code was too forced this kid to cut his hair. The kid had no other problems in school he had. He's a senior. He had no behavior issues eighth grade. He had no like no. I haven't gotten any trouble. NOLA drug use nothing right early Kevin in highschool certainly the opposite Jimmy and he's not go to school. Well this and the injustice of it she just couldn't shake it and I really really got and so two days after. She saw the story on the news the kid and his mom the Andre and his mom were here in L. A.. And what a nice kid. He was a nice young man. Here's a little clip of Ellen. Talking to him and taking up his Causse boss Andre so I know this is weird for you because you're just like you're in a school in a small town in Texas and and all of a sudden this is national news and now you're on television and I'm sure this is not easier comfortable for you so but I want to just relax and know that I'm here for you and that's why that's why you're here because because I don't understand this they've told you that you need to cut your hair in order to return to school. You get good grades. You've never been been in trouble ever. This is the first time anything that's come up and now you're not you haven't been in school for weeks because of this situation so okay when did and when did this dress code happened that you because you've been wearing your hair up writing okay. Every day I would go to school I would always be in dress code but the thing with him is if it was led down I would be out address code in this issue really escalated about after Christmas break so so you were wearing your hair up and that that was fine but the point was if you let it down it would be passed. What is this? It's not supposed to be your ears can be in your face past few ears touching your caller and but are there girls in your school. Okay and do. The girls have long hair. Story Billy Irish has dragged you cheapest for dressing up and pretending to be her for you know pranks or I guess just to kill kill the time at the end of the day. She's happy about it A couple of you chief is dressed up like billy in an attempt to prank strange is in public and go viral mate that has been done right. prankings strangers is is over. If you want to go viral in two thousand twenty you go prank racist. That's the new move now. This is obviously easy with billy because billy has specific sense of style you know. She's got that the green tinged has she was sort of Baggy Very colorful clothes. You know she has a very distinct. Look so it's quite easy to disguise herself as if if you disguise yourself as like I. DuNno Duncan from blue. It'd be hard because on the one hand he doesn't wear crazy close on the other hand. I don't think anyone knows who blew is anymore goal. which is a real shame on January thirtieth which I believe is also the same day that James tells took to tick tock wars? What a magical day that was billy went on instagram? I'm I'm posted a photo of a youtube pretending to be her and she wrote quote. Please stop doing this. She said it is not safe. You and it's mean to people who don't know any better. She then said you make me look bad. She also criticized. The Youtube is for wearing ugly clothing while pretending to be her she said also so disrespectful. Fool that you'd go out pretending to be me wearing this In this case some very ugly Lime green shorts. I just in case history was weighed enough. It turns is out the person dresses. I listen I know people don't like this thing but there's been a lot of them before and that makes it okay and that's a good lesson for the kids home. An <Speech_Male> interview <SpeakerChange> with the BBC <Speech_Female> pretty <Speech_Female> much. That whole song <Silence> is about <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> Me <SpeakerChange> An Fini's <Speech_Female> is relationship <Speech_Female> as siblings siblings. <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> I mean there's so <Speech_Female> many <SpeakerChange> I can't even <Speech_Female> pinpoint the <Speech_Female> exact message because <Speech_Female> there's a thousand <Speech_Female> <Speech_Female> but it's kind <Speech_Female> of like my brother <Speech_Female> is my best friend and <Speech_Female> and <Speech_Female> you know I have these <Speech_Female> dreams and these things <Speech_Female> happen and <Speech_Female> no matter what happens <Speech_Female> like he's <Speech_Female> GonNa always <Speech_Female> be there for me and <Speech_Female> it's the same <Speech_Female> the other way around. "Called me we just oh okay so to cool things happening opening their underwater literally. Sounds like it's underwater. Yeah and then when they called me week on that word week it sounds. It's like a number of people are saying to her at the same time. ooh I didn't even catch that. I want to hear that I think I don't know wrote rewind it back. They he called me. We owe that subtle. There's something they've they've manipulated her tracking almost whispered they called me. It makes me think of people of a group of people kind of pointing their finger and saying let's also give full credit to billy eyelash and her ability to impart so much meaning into these phrases. The the little vocal turn she does. My head was underwater. There's like a little and of subtle trill. They're the control. She has the intimacy. It's powerful absolutely and under girding. What makes Sir Performance? So great is a set of harmonies. That are think perhaps equally as confusing as has the performed emotional state of the song loves the keys. Good check thank you when I first heard these sounds. I knew something was up on a couldn't figure out what it was so I consulted with our friend of Perez from top forty theory. Nice anytime you have a corporation that's played in a loop that repeats itself for an extended extended section of a song or even for an entire song in this is the case in most popular songs. It limits the functional feel of the corporation because the a quick progression is contained in a very small sort of capsule and the listener very quickly stops being affected by the supposed- tension in released properties pretty's of the courts so for example in everything I wanted when the progression is slightly altered in the middle of the chorus and instead of a minor three chord. You get a major record. Record the expectation for the Luke to stay the same as defied in. That's very noticeable. Moment in the song in terms of the harmony so for the repeat itself the most significant tension it generates from Armani standpoint. Is that when listener. Here's the last quarter of the loop. They expect it's a return to the forest scored in the next measure or the next kind of metric units so to sum up. Yes everything I wanted has a non resolve inc but down resolution is more of a harmonic flavor rather than a functional building block. A lot of times in music today court sort of function in as they did in in in the classical times which is to say that they don't necessarily resolve to a certain place. We're not trying to point you in direction. Yeah in fact the song like like with Mac Miller but also here with billy. They're more for creating an atmosphere and one of the ways they can create. An atmosphere is is by not pointing in a direction keeping things open letting the performer. Try Different ways of singing over that repeating loop right and in this one in particular also would call this an open progression because it actually doesn't resolve to its home key in fact the home key isn't in the cords at all. It's one of these strange chord progressions without its root chord and just to highlight how this song has both these Hopes and dreams and as well as their nightmares. We could actually imagine the song being a major song or a minor song into illustrate it. I took this chord progression Chen and ended it in a major key ended a minor key. Let's check out. What though sounds like do you wanna you wanNA sound a minor or major with start with minor always want to end with major.

"Someone who blocked by tape for US man. I've talked to say that's heavy back that that groove is heavy and I like it drake's flow fits right in in the pocket. Yeah this is cool so here I think we have. Drake expounding is great material success. He is excited about hanging out with his buddy. Not Virgil. He's got a pack on his wrist Virgil as the head of Louis Vuitton menswear line friends with him and and the paddock is a high in wrist watch. He is rhyming about his theme. How it is more than just social media meam even more than just his influence he later says this is fame not clout this claim not cloud pounding disavow watching mouth an important distinction and he's often critiqued memes not music right? So he's addressing his critics. He's celebrating life and he's frankly bragging about his Manor House Rosewood. which is a signature sweet in the upscale? London Ruse would hotel also. Life is good right is it. I don't know it's like it's a fun track but the production is Kinda cold like it. has these really dark minor patty Yeah Yeah it's very sparse. Yeah that central baseline has kind of a harsh buzzy sawtooth kind of texture to exactly and you know I actually think if we look at the The opening the line it really shows where drake is at working on the weekend like usual. Why can't no no no weekend? I go in and deepen usual and the music videos actually really fun. It's drake and future both both working overtime jobs. And they go from being a mechanic to working in a retail location. And I think there's sort of a worker solidarity which is going on with the song but underneath that I think the darkness of the track and drake rhyming about how life is great and he has all this material excess. He's really just showing that like told altogether he's constantly working off camera. And that's where future comes in. Okay so the song as I said is is in two acts. And there's a simple flip which takes the song in a new sonic territory by interrupting drake. Here's future curtain up to Rosewood to plush cool rebounds on this is good. This is a funny moment because this is actually future sampling himself. This is an interview that he did did with. The I believe French outlet called Click Creek Sieve Brooklyn though the interview Cooman Rebounds Bounds on. I was good. You seem to feel good when you're who great so future here is of course talking about his red bottom shoes batons and celebrating in life. Let's get a little bit more of what's going on for future way. Chief rang on through Spain. sprained main thought three dollars zone of rain called CAIN fence Brennan instead. That's right and now the serpent tail. Yeah the fire-breathing Lyon we were talking. How the very beginning of the Song Jake has like a certain Heaviness to it. Yeah we just threw a hundred pound weight on that and now we're like rattling. We've got trap hats. We've got heavy base. Yeah yeah things have taken a turn. It's the same themes here we have future bragging about. He's going off to Spain flying private just to buy a watch MHM sounds like an exhausting trip but yeah I mean just all the rigmarole you know packing and traffic back to the airport and time change the volt who wants to go line privates vein for the violence. It's crazy well. Future has the time because he just bought the watch point taken. Okay Anyway. He pairs this line with the end of his verse. He says wasn't the trap servant. Cocaine haven't been the same since and I think what we've gotten. The song is that seem struggle between gene having made it but many ways his pass catching up to him a systemic injustice of living the trap constantly bothering him he then then talks about landing in London and needing to make sure that he is packing heat and that that there's constant people out to get him and so he has both made it but it has got to have his head over his shoulder. Line in a more in Orlando they gotTA stretch. But I'm on a PJ private jet chat. Lighten up backward full sticky having fun time on the plane Lands in London. And you know he's carrying a weapon with him and worried worried about You know people are going to carry a stretcher behind so doesn't matter if you're flying private in your safe in the air you land and he's he's still has the same fears that he's always had the thing that really puts the song into bummer territory. If you will. Isn't it the final line the refrain. It's cheap spring. You know futures. Entire Uber is known for its reference to lean in reference to Codeine percocet. One of his mask off was talking all about using Bali and Percocet. I think in his music in the production even in his vocal delivery feels Dell's completely inebriated. And it seems that you know as he's flying around he can't escape these things and I and I thought man is that is that dark but in going a little deeper in trying to find out what future thought about this himself. I think you'll find that it's not so simple in a rolling stone interview. He did with Charles Holmes he had expressed. I think it was twenty sixteen. Maybe some concern. He says you know. What have I done on? What have I done to other people when myself talking about the celebration of drug culture? Yeah but he also says in that same interview with Creek Geek We. Yeah yeah maybe as listeners. We could hear it in a different way. You know what I mean. I'm not Super Drug Drug Addi my music may portray a certain kind of image and I know some people that might be super drugged out and they listen to the music eight thanking. He's speaking for me and some people they feel like man. I don't have to listen to future and feel like most most something I know how to try. I'm not doing it for the try I'd do it for like For Mom people that enjoy on just like for you to really have to live that type live that should be dares new slogan. Don't do drugs listen. Just listen to future and you'll love. It's the same thing basically I really. I appreciate how he uses the he samples himself from this interview celebrating. How life is good? Yeah he I think in his production in his lyrics questions that same exact feeling is life really good just being haunted by his past and yet if we just go and look at the material that he samples we see that maybe this is more of a performance than it seems. Perhaps this is a AH voting a sense of an abbreviation. Yeah not necessarily celebrating it or endorsing it and I think that might connect this track back to Mac Miller Miller in a way. Both of these are nominally. Hip Hop songs. That kind of are nevertheless the bleeding edge of where rapping ends in singing begins and they're also tracks that sort of force you to confront the performing Tippety of of of the act where there might sound sort of unstudied and improvise but the closer you look in the closer you listen you see that. These are very deliberate choices. Being made by Mac Miller and future in their respective songs to give you that feeling of spontaneity and something unstudied because that disorientation is so effective Vegetable for us as listening yeah. The camera is in full affect. Yeah I'm Jillian Weinberger. Who's the impact a podcast from? Vox about how powerful people affect the rest of us this season. "Oh is he changing his phrasing using but as soon as he says. Why can't be easy actually thinks if you do get used to ban comes to join him to give him some support Marimba in their air vibes Isla phone or something really pretty. Yeah it is and then you had mentioned one of your favorite moments where he really really plays with our expectations of of phrasing. And and you're you're trying to Macquarie at yeah. So here's the last couple lines of the first verse. niamh burn clean still busy dream. The rhyme scheme is never you can never lock in no it's never just like ab AB. It's constantly changing in that kind of keeps you on your toes as a listener. You don't know exactly what to expect. He's switching up the phrasing. Same as long pauses. Even love how he just says the difficult world is like get get everything I need that I'm gone. And he doesn't get everything I need them. Gone Down and and I get everything is both highly performed and yet because of the way that he's changing these rhyme schemes. He's he's altering the phrasing changing his intonation throughout it ends up feeling entirely natural. The almost feels like he's having a conversation and you're trying I to lean in closer to hear what he has to say next right. I think this is something that I've had to accept over the years with this artist. I think I think when I first heard Mac Miller. I was very dismissive and I think a big part of that was because of his vocal delivery which sounded kind of laconic neck. And maybe sort of like mumble mouth and lazy to me and but in this song especially and in general the way I think about him I'm now is that these are aesthetic choices and I think that is exactly the point. The goal is to bring you in as listener by him hanging back. Yeah so you have to throw that space and I think it I says I don't make me like paid. Don't make me try and understand everything you're saying but of course that is the reward that deep listening. Yeah I think he really gets you when he just fluidly. Switches from rap into song and I love this moment at the end of the first verse to put a Little Book and on our conversation.

"Musical universe seven bad guy over the presence of these long sort of instrumental passages as explained very very nicely in the tell all book by their manager explained their last minute panic in the studio and all the albums after the second one between the second four how they would just come in with no songs written and just have to produce something like three weeks. I would counter with routes autobiography crazy from the heat which is excellent book. A classic every page like carved on gold tablets for him. It's like it's it's as popular but like as Brittany said like billy. Somebody who is deeply versed in deeply passionate about like music and very much has an broth like way of consuming pop music and listening to stuff for the past thinking. How can I use this? which is their main affinity? We were going to talk about the van Halen on since years which row one of my favorite things you ever said was that there was a period when prince was trying to sound like Van Halen and been helm was trying to sound like Prince. Yes if you listen to ice ice cream man now listen to the end of it that parody. Blues Anyway bomb blow bluntly it's like that was the temporary. Let's go crazy. Prince was like I gotta do that whereas his jump. The first time I heard jump I was like this is just prince's dirty mind. I can't believe that they're going to try to get away with this. I heard this on my local. FM Rock Station and and if they were like we were debut in the new van Halen Song and immediately afterwards the digi said yeah real original guys and then played dirty. Mind so obvious so. It's funny that that it has become for you like the Canonical Van Halen Song. Yeah and don't sleep on the fact that even hell and played on beat it. I mean that is that is actually just occurred to me that probably that would be something that you could say to believe all that schooling noise on beating. He's the guy who made the there i. I might have held back on that because it's probably not her favorite part of beat it exactly but you know what's funny but that is an example of any been hell and actually Kinda got swindled Michael Jackson because he kind of did it as a favor and never appeared in of any video and I believe didn't and get paid for it so you know all good David Lee Roth said what's the big deal. He just played the same solo. He plays on every van. halen record we've ever made as Van van Halen Fan. I just want to say that it's been awful decade of no information in Tours. That are very brief in just to such a cone cone of silence around the ban. It's been five years now of no activity now. David is going to Vegas for Solo show and he said that the band is over. And there's just it's a sad state of affairs it is and it's just at the same time all band like that needs. As far as re entering the public consciousness it is like an iconic moment in a new movie like their equivalent of Bahamian. rhapsody in Wayne's world they're kind of or a great bio-pic which by the way actually I think they're actually could be a great column Machine Gun Kelly to play. I enjoyed the scene in the Irishman. Where a Pacino Deniro like committed murder to To unchained not matching who could have been also not have that Marty take it. No Gentile Played David Lee Roth that by the way I would be. That would be personally offended by that. So so how'd you frame the movie. The Van halen movie. I think it's one of those that Sh- it should be partially a comedy and it should be based on that managers book and it should be about basically like David Lee. Roth is the craziest person on earth rivaled only by the van Halen brothers and just pour my anthony. Just being like shut out of all the royalties. He's and it would be amazing. I can see feud by Ryan Murphy of a feud have a mini series of. Just Roth van Halen okay. That's genius idea. Thank you that absolutely should have it. I can't believe you just pitched that for free. To Rewrite Samantha Fruit Basket and it didn't entire episode where we gave away like seven bio-pic pitches for free on the radio. That's dumb we are so there needs to be a scene of a young van. Halen when they are. You can't play guitar. You suck and nobody will ever want to hear a song jumping. I remember the night I saw rocket man like actually I had a horrible dream that night where there was a van Halen version of rocket man in all four of them. We're going to therapy including Van Halen lyrics and their group therapy. It's one of those dreams where you're you like. This is a terrible terrible movie. When does it end whereas the yesterday with no van Halen exactly in the current world that they will retirement.

"In the studio Andy Green and Rob Sheffield in a moment. We're going to be joined by Britney SPANOS and we're going to talk about a controversy that set twitter aflame this week and I wanted to talk about it. Because there's just a lot of INS and outs about this controversy a lot to talk about. 'cause I probably shouldn't have been controversy at all when I'm referring to two is billy said on the Jimmy. Kimmel show that she had never heard of Van Halen and came in the segment where Jimmy Kimmel was kind. It just quizzing her based on the amazing fact that she is only seventeen years old and was born in December two thousand and one. She never heard the words. I mean I think some context next is important that she was born this post Gary Sharon. This is after three singers when they were just in a wasteland which in many ways days. They're still kind of air crazy way. That's a spike to reunions. But in a one like Ben Hanlin was so in the view mirror of the culture and I wanted to say of of course billy Bush who seventeen should not have heard of Van Halen. It doesn't surprise me at all anyone who condemned her for that is nuts. That's not the purpose of this discussion. The purpose of the discussion is that raised a lot of hilarious issues. Do we have. That clipper how close I am to death. You know who. Madonna is. Madonna's can you name a van Halen who really start crying. Have you heard of Cyndi lauper. Yeah Eh Lewis some fill in the blank run DM now that was the other point. I was making before the show. How come people weren't outraged as you hadn't heard of run DMC again? I don't think anyone should should be outraged about any of this. But if you're going to be outraged but van Halen. You should be at least as run DMC. But I don't know there's so much to talk about. Britney what was your your first thought was like how ridiculous Dick use it was. The people were mad at her right. Yeah because there's also an old clip. I think it's two weeks ago right and all of a sudden people were really really pressed about it. AH JUST TO INTERJECT FOR WANTS TO KEEP in mind. The Rolling Stone had a ten year old list. A ten-year old list of the Best Sierras and that twitter spent a week going nuts about that a few weeks ago so so two weeks is nothing but yeah please go on yeah. I thought it was kind of ridiculous. It was weird that people were focusing so much on it and it seemed like I don't know like you said it's just like Dan Halen. That's not at the top of things that I'm like teen should know this but again a lot of issues. Let's talk about Billy Bush in her tastes to start what it is interesting is. She does love Green Day so it's not like she's a stranger great rock cannon. But that's a band that in her lifetime. They've had their biggest album album and have been very much part of mainstream culture. They've been on so many awards shows. They've been oliver just so many places. Where van Halen has been totally absent? She had a whole conversation with Billie Joe. Armstrong in our musicians musicians issue that was super fascinating and one of the things that underscored again is just her sheer shear like youth and coolness. She really had billy Joel like slightly uncomfortable. She would say things and he wouldn't understand what she was saying. She was talking about how he was on her wallpaper and he we thought that meant her wall and became clarified that it was her phone and it was. Just you could feel poor billy Joel like aging by the minute in an interview trying to just trying to confront confront this thing and I think in general she makes a lot of people feel their age. I remember we talked before on the show about. I saw a bunch of twenty something music critics being like. I didn't get this I I was sort of scared of it. It took me a while. So there's something about her that really makes people want to torture themselves with how old they are right. Yeah I mean it's a mixture of the sound which is very now very very kind of like you know. Sleepy sad emo rap that she liked combined with a lot of pop influences. But it's also the motive in which she blew up which is through soundcloud first and then through social media and kind of like coming out of nowhere it seemed on the charts which is a lot of things these days so I think it was a big mixture of all of that. We're everything else is a little bit discernible prior to like five years ago and also billions in so many ways the David Lee Roth of her generation. I was waiting for have and they have such profound aesthetic affinities. They're both really great at talking. Parts of the song where the pros is the best part of the song and Spend the entire song like waiting for the part where she just talks a little bit. Where did she get that? She got that from Mr One for the ladies. David Lee Roth back himself. Invented vented that entire thing so and it's funny that they're both classicists of pop culture in very different ways. David Lee Roth was always yes I own records by Louis. Prima Blake Blake. All my Solo. Hits are going to be covers of songs that were hits in the forties. He took pride in being that guy. Whereas like billy is like really dislike a more of have a plunderer in at like absolutely like efficient way but her phillies with David? Lee Roth seems so so so to speak for themselves. That obviously take as I guess David Lee Roth himself would say change. Nothing stays the same now. I'm glad you brought up Louis Prima which the thing I say that sentence because I realized that basically the exact temporal distance between van Halen's first album album. And now it's equivalent to the distance between Louis Primoz version of just a Gigolo and David Lee Roth so just take that in in for minute. That's how antique BA I. Van Halen album is now so again not surprising that she would know it. It also means that if she covered running running with the devil it would be as campy as David Lee Roth covering just a Gigolo and justice aliens so it's hard to definitely Hummel Zebulon bubbler Hamlin babies up up with the dove of its day. I think it also speaks to again a lot of angles. We want to get to but I think there is an issue of legacy maintenance with van. Halen that is problematic or non-existent. Yeah I think van Halen is a band. That's their legacy rot. There's no documentary. There's no memoir. There's no super deluxe versions of their albums. There's there's no net flicks anything. There's no bio pic. They don't social media's They are just completely absent from the culture large and have been for years and years and that means that the people who are very knowledgeable about them or people who were fans back then but they have not spent a the second a trying to get new fans in the past few decades and they don't buff via the ways that old rocks generally buffers as you pointed out they do not schmooze is on social media. They do not do not really have any grasp of how media works. Yeah I was. I was speaking to Brian but rem. I interview Peter Buck Okay. Few weeks ago I dialed the number and somebody answered and they went. Rem You know the office WHO's full time job is to work on our am and they do a great job grabs but there's No van Halen office that's working on the brand of Venezuelan. It's just covered in dust and mold. Let's not erase the glee version of jump. With Sir Effect on many people and classic it does bring up again. This thing that all classic rock is not created equal end that the Canon as perceived by younger people is going to be different because of the different degrees of both sort of brand maintenance by the acts themselves. And just other sort of vagaries of just the way things happened. I mean I think that Queen and Nirvana are probably like the biggest old bands right and it's and queen a lot of that. There's obviously just due to the movie. I think yeah and I mean I think queen songs chest were everywhere and no matter. What even before the movie? I think you go to any sporting event and you'll hear we will rock you. You know we are the champions like those songs are just inescapable and because Brian May always says yes he's yes I'll go on American idol. Oh yes I'll do this. Yes I'll do that with inhalant. It's just a uniform. No they're complete opposites but their willingness to be a part of the culture and Nirvana. I mean it's a Tragedy I mean. I think it's like people like kind of carry romanticize it and a lot of ways and you don't even necessarily need to know the music as we saw. I mean even earlier this year the other conversation Kazakhs putting an interpretation of in bloom on Panini and not knowing who was before. Yeah it's the equivalent of the doors in the eighties whereas Jim Morrison's arsons almost more famous than than he was back. You know it's these things grow if you die young often but but that was the case for Queen in the nineties and the nineties it was already super bizarre. How posthumously popular queen work in Wayne's world big thing? Yeah a lot of magazines. They're nine hundred. Ninety two year in review roundups there would be inevitably an essay because think peace hadn't been invented then but about like. How the Hell did this Queen Revival happen because nothing like it had happened before I remember? It was a really strange range thing. That queen were so popular compared to five years earlier or even three years earlier even two years earlier. It wasn't a big news story when they had that Freddie Mercury concert certain nobody was paying attention in this country because queen just had dropped out like for the entire eighties. They were much bigger in the nineties than they were in the eighties. Much bigger in the two thousands. It's fascinating Hafer. Some some bands their legacy rises and rises. And you can't necessarily predict it is very much versions of what you talk about in your Beatles. Book that there's there's always a different Beatles and it depends on the perception the promise with some of these bands. There's never another van Halen like this. The the van Halen of now to go with your Beatles nowadays like just doesn't exist. The unknown autumn now is now most famous for billy island not hearing of them. But it's also something that you can't predict if you back in time to the ninety s and said who will be more famous miss. You mean you mentioned Green Day. Who Will be more famous in Twenty Nineteen Green Day or Sarah McLaughlin like a hundred out of one hundred people would have laughed in your face like at the very idea of that question? It was self evident that Sarah McLaughlin was a legacy artists building mystery so to speak and she was just going to the greatest great song. I Love Sarah Mclaughlin and the Green Day where you know like a novelty band who had had a hit a couple years ago and same thing with Weezer if you went back in time and said WHO's going to be higher regarded in two thousand nineteen weezer or the breeders. Absolutely everybody would have had this. I mean it is incredible. I mean Van Halen like what are associations have been held Brittany gleaned. I'm just GonNa just kidding. I mean I know like it..

"Care my own gun and drive my own trump. Our state troopers shouldn't have to be out hauling politicians on vacation they should. It'd be protecting you as governor. Our for you. Same thing they're just really Republican trying to nationalize it Democrat trying to make it local right so Democrat Jim Hood. I think that he's exactly the type of Democrat. You need if you have a chance of winning US other race. He's one as attorney general there before you can hear in that ad he's Progun on. He's antiabortion his truck makes an appearance in every single addy sort of portraying himself as the good old boy shows himself going to church and hunting and so he's very moderate in that way he is running to expand Medicaid the state which Which is one major difference between the two but then you have tate reeves lieutenant governor also a little bit of you know sort of a popularity problem there? He's rubbed some Republicans even the wrong way there in the state but he really sort of hopes that The Republican lean of the state plays out that this impeachment Sort of a rally around president trump. Come help him there again. And of course he was there on Friday night helping and for Rally for Reeves and we have seen that trump when he goes into these really red states It shows just how how cohesive his base Zil it is I mean I think if Republicans when in both Kentucky and Mississippi. This isn't assuredly that president trump is going to win because these are really red states that he won by double digits that you know spoiler alert. He's going to win in two thousand twenty again but if a Democrat wins that would be a story. If a Democrat wins it shows that voters are still willing to sort sort of make it to differentiate that maybe trump's base does have some cracks in it and I think that that's what that would tell us because I mean doesn't mean that you know. A Democrat is going to carry in Mississippi in twenty twenty but I think it shows us. The voters are still willing to differentiate between state and federal candidates okay. There's another governor's race but it's not today it's in Louisiana. It's GonNa be a runoff between the incumbent. Democrat John Bel Edwards in Republican Eddie reports. It'll be on November sixteenth. I'm GonNa push that went to the side because let's talk about the other big big story today in terms of elections and that is what's happening where you are. In the State of Virginia Democrats control the governorship there and they are close to flipping both houses houses in the state legislature. Some heavy hitters have been in town from both parties To try to rev up their their bases. But why is there so much attention in being paid to Virginia's state assembly well because Republicans have just very slim majorities the F.. A fifty one forty eight majority in the house of delegates and only a one-seat advantage and the state eight Senate and if they can flip that then you have a you have a united Democrat democratic governance here with Democratic governor down the line for the first time time since the one thousand nine hundred and they really wanna push gun reforms especially guns is a big issue of course if Virginia has been the unfortunate side of some of these mass shootings Virginia Tech over a decade ago and then most recently earlier this year in Virginia Beach where an employee opened fire and municipal building. And that's being pushed on in one race there too you. It's these suburbs in Virginia. We're seeing that are massively shifting. Democrats flipped three congressional seats there last year in the midterms. And it's sort of in these same areas around Richmond here in northern Virginia where I am or around Virginia Beach and Hampton roads that they are sort of seeing these changes and they can push gun control through they can push him other other changes and also there's the equal rights. This sort of hasn't been talked a lot about since it stalled in the nineteen seventies Virginia would actually be the last state to ratify this amendment. So we can get a constitutional amendment for the first time in quite a while if Virginia does go. All Democratic reminded this morning when I turned on the news that it was election day because where I am there. Aren't that many things on the ballot. But do people turn out just briefly. Do People turn out on these off year elections. That's what will tell us We have seen in Virginia that You know when two years ago when when the governor's race it happened that there was a lot of swell of support port among Democrats and I think in Virginia. especially I mean this is a state that one time was purple removing blue. And if we see a lot of democratic turnout that shows that Democrats can still motivate.
